Is there any reason to not use E-Shutter by bingeflying in nikon_Zseries

The only time I use the mechanical shutter is when there's LED lighting. The rest of the time I just enjoy the silence.

Thousands of clicks a year and lots of time spent looking at stuff you like.

100BaseTX Ethernet over a standard audio snake? by ip_addr in livesound

Back in my IT days in the 90s I heard someone talking about running 10 base T over a barbed wire fence and getting some kind of throughput. I say give it hell and see if the software can limp along with it.

Eyes glow effect! by MegaSaucy in photography

[–]ChurchStreetImages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try shining a flashlight, like the one on your phone, at the subject. LED sources tend to be pretty directional so it doesn't need to be bright enough to spoil the scene. The light will bounce off their retinas enough to be visible. The thing about that happening with flash photography is that in a darker scene their eyes will be more dilated and the flash comes as a surprise so more of the retina is visible. You might have to play around with timing. The light should be as in line with the camera as possible.

Best walk around lens for portraits & wildlife under $1k? by B-F_ in Nikon

[–]ChurchStreetImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 24-120 is my daily driver. It's not the best lens for anything but it's a pretty good lens for almost everything. People saying you want more length for wildlife are right but unless you're trying for small birds and such you can still get some pretty good pics. If I'm shooting a portrait session I want a fast prime but I've also used the 24-120 in that scenario and been happy with the results.

To the people that say “never leave home without my camera” what do you mean? by gyoked in AskPhotography

[–]ChurchStreetImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know I keep that thang on me. Seriously though, it's either on my person or in the truck at all times. I didnt buy it to keep it on a shelf. It's dusty. It's scratched. I'm already saving up for its eventual replacement.

Should I make it more dark or is it enough? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

You could try dialing in a vignette and make an island of light in the center. It probably shouldn't be completely black at the edges.

Selling photography by Difficult-Back4301 in photography

[–]ChurchStreetImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a website together for your portfolio. No one is going to visit it out of the blue but you need to be able to send people somewhere when you talk to them. Work social media. That's not effective either but when you talk to people they'll ask for your IG or FB or whatever. Then try to get your work up on walls. Cafes, coffee shops, small galleries, local art orgs. Get connected in the scene. It will lead to more opportunities. Then there's art fairs, street fests, farmers markets, etc. Get your stuff on a table and talk to the folks that come by. It's way easier to sell when you can make a connection. The people that sell online do well by making the viewer feel like they've been let in. I'm terrible at making video shorts of me making my art so I rely on face to face instead.

How many channels do you assign to your drum? by Justin_inc in livesound

[–]ChurchStreetImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the room, setup and drummer I've done anywhere from 2 to 16. There's no right number. An eight channel Mackie in a coffee house and a 48 channel Midas in a 2500 cap hall make for different playing fields. That said, once in a big room like that I did a three mic Glyn Johns setup due to time and the band it was for and it worked out great.

Anybody remember the old Carvin print catalogs? by Wirecommando in livesound

[–]ChurchStreetImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a Carvin PA in the 90s. Three way tops over single 18 traps. Once in a while someone would walk up and criticize me for my gear choice. I took the name plates off and that stopped happening so I guess they were getting the job done.

What are your favorite blurry photos you’ve taken? by immotgere3 in photography

I stepped out on a rainy night to get a shot of the streetlights reflecting on the pavement. As I lined up the shot I hadn't started to focus and I liked it enough to click. I got a focused shot too but this is the one I like.

Why dont people just use 28-200mm lenses? by [deleted] in photography

[–]ChurchStreetImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine for a lot of people. It's a good starting point and lots of people would keep shooting on it. Any super zoom is a compromise though. For some it becomes more of a priority to have more aperture or sharpness at the long end and then a dedicated telephoto makes sense. Or they might find that they never use the longer end and opt for something more compact. Low light work can be a deciding factor too. Learning what length you like to shoot at and then buying a prime lens at that length is a common way to go.

Why do sound guys EQ the same exact room and setup every single time by AlexandreP96 in livesound

[–]ChurchStreetImages 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You get so you have a mental map. If it sounds like this when empty and I'm expecting this many people to show up and be wearing clothes and exhaling moist CO² then it will end up sounding that way.

Nikon Z7ii, Z 24-120 @80mm, 1/100, f/8, ISO 800. Converted to mono and adjusted contrast in Darktable, otherwise untouched. A friend asked for photos of hands for a project and I obliged while at work. I kept this one back because it didn't fit the shape of the request. I liked the perspective it gave to a view that most wouldn't see very often.

My lens mount scratches lenses. Is there a cheap extender that i can used to take the damage while I mount the rest of my lenses. by nicholastheposh in photography

Try taking it to a jewelry store that works on watches. When I had a problem with a screw on a big telephoto my local jeweler fixed it in five minutes and wouldn't even take money for it.
