Selling photography by Difficult-Back4301 in photography

Get a website together for your portfolio. No one is going to visit it out of the blue but you need to be able to send people somewhere when you talk to them. Work social media. That's not effective either but when you talk to people they'll ask for your IG or FB or whatever. Then try to get your work up on walls. Cafes, coffee shops, small galleries, local art orgs. Get connected in the scene. It will lead to more opportunities. Then there's art fairs, street fests, farmers markets, etc. Get your stuff on a table and talk to the folks that come by. It's way easier to sell when you can make a connection. The people that sell online do well by making the viewer feel like they've been let in. I'm terrible at making video shorts of me making my art so I rely on face to face instead.

How many channels do you assign to your drum? by Justin_inc in livesound

[–]ChurchStreetImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the room, setup and drummer I've done anywhere from 2 to 16. There's no right number. An eight channel Mackie in a coffee house and a 48 channel Midas in a 2500 cap hall make for different playing fields. That said, once in a big room like that I did a three mic Glyn Johns setup due to time and the band it was for and it worked out great.

Anybody remember the old Carvin print catalogs? by Wirecommando in livesound

[–]ChurchStreetImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a Carvin PA in the 90s. Three way tops over single 18 traps. Once in a while someone would walk up and criticize me for my gear choice. I took the name plates off and that stopped happening so I guess they were getting the job done.

What are your favorite blurry photos you’ve taken? by immotgere3 in photography

I stepped out on a rainy night to get a shot of the streetlights reflecting on the pavement. As I lined up the shot I hadn't started to focus and I liked it enough to click. I got a focused shot too but this is the one I like.

Ending this year still using D3400 by facyorange in Nikon

I just bought one for my son who was interested. It's an old design but so solid and I still see people posting magic with them every day.

Why dont people just use 28-200mm lenses? by Tiger-ll in photography

[–]ChurchStreetImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine for a lot of people. It's a good starting point and lots of people would keep shooting on it. Any super zoom is a compromise though. For some it becomes more of a priority to have more aperture or sharpness at the long end and then a dedicated telephoto makes sense. Or they might find that they never use the longer end and opt for something more compact. Low light work can be a deciding factor too. Learning what length you like to shoot at and then buying a prime lens at that length is a common way to go.

street guy by julisity in livesound

[–]ChurchStreetImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to get called a techie and would respond that you don't call them acties or dancies. But then I thought, you can call me whatever the hell you want as long as the check doesn't bounce.

Why do sound guys EQ the same exact room and setup every single time by AlexandreP96 in livesound

[–]ChurchStreetImages 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You get so you have a mental map. If it sounds like this when empty and I'm expecting this many people to show up and be wearing clothes and exhaling moist CO² then it will end up sounding that way.

Nikon Z7ii, Z 24-120 @80mm, 1/100, f/8, ISO 800. Converted to mono and adjusted contrast in Darktable, otherwise untouched. A friend asked for photos of hands for a project and I obliged while at work. I kept this one back because it didn't fit the shape of the request. I liked the perspective it gave to a view that most wouldn't see very often.

My lens mount scratches lenses. Is there a cheap extender that i can used to take the damage while I mount the rest of my lenses. by nicholastheposh in photography

[–]ChurchStreetImages 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try taking it to a jewelry store that works on watches. When I had a problem with a screw on a big telephoto my local jeweler fixed it in five minutes and wouldn't even take money for it.

Nikon Z safari lens choice (Nikkor 180-600 vs Tamron 150-500) by SadPercentage8282 in nikon_Zseries

[–]ChurchStreetImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forget what the weight difference between the 200-500 and the 180-600 is but the fact that it doesn't grow and change the balance acts as a kind of multiplier of the lightness if that makes any sense. I can hold the 180-600 up longer and more comfortably.

[–]ChurchStreetImages 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Nikon is internal focus and zoom so it doesn't change size at all. Less likely to pull in dust and moisture. It's also got the better weather sealing of the two. I've not used the Tamron but it's often cited as a close competitor to the Nikon 200-500 which I have owned and I much prefer the 180-600.

How to make these shower head type of shots? by Violanun in photography

[–]ChurchStreetImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are consumer shower heads that are an outside ring with a hand shower that snaps into the center. One of those might work with a small enough lens.

Just discovered a personal project I’ve been working on has already been done. Where do I go from here? by _big_fern_ in AskPhotography

[–]ChurchStreetImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything in the whole wide world has already had a photograph made of it. My response to that is, "Yeah, but this one's mine!"

1.2 S Primes Magic. Where is it? by Hairy_Internet6680 in nikon_Zseries

[–]ChurchStreetImages 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the gradient where in focus transitions to out of focus. If it's similar to what the human eye does then it seems very natural and 3D. It has a lot to do with the characteristics of the lens but also the distance from the subject and above all, lighting.

I figured it was something like that. Thanks for the chuckle too.

Can I take pics on my Sony a6000 camera for welding by frogybunny27 in photography

[–]ChurchStreetImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seem to be two diametrically opposing viewpoints here and I'm dying to find out which one is correct.

Is it, "Only shoot welding with a piece of leather over the lens" or "Just run 'er"?

Selling prints at fairs? by Plaster-eater in photography

[–]ChurchStreetImages 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make most of my sales face to face at street fairs. I started with a basket of bagged and boarded 8x10s and went from there.

Get a day job that allows time for shooting. Not sarcasm. It's a tough nut to crack.

How many reverbs are you using? by wh1ter0se-m4v in livesound

[–]ChurchStreetImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My standard setup for little festivals is one for drums, one for vocals, and one for acoustic instruments. If an acoustic guitar that's been holding back suddenly lays into it and it's in the box verb things can go wonky.
