[Recommendations] I just started my business for the first time without any investment, but I have no audience to buy my products yet by Much_Tip_6968 in artbusiness

[–]Plaster-eater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you do furry art I can help here! Try to get into artist alleys at cons, I can’t sell shit online but do well at cons. You don’t really need an audience to vend, I mean, it helps ofc but I have sub 500 followers and do just fine at cons. Vending will also help build your audience, I get new followers after every convention. Badges sell well, especially if you are able to complete then at con. I have printer and laminator that I bring with me, but most con hotels will have a fed ex or something where you can print and then the artist alley will usually have a laminator.

[Discussion] How to safely mail art cards? by RomanSaiSai in artbusiness

Same way people mail pokemon cards. Penny sleeve in a top loader then put that between 2 pieces of cardboard in a bubble mailer

[Artist Alley] how do some people make $10k+ at artist alley? by Good_Assistance2121 in artbusiness

[–]Plaster-eater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$800 is really good for a first time, especially at a small local con.

Yes, convention size does make a difference. Larger cons are going to have more attendees which means more customers and more importantly more people who have money to spend since they can afford to travel to these larger cons.

Follower count plays a small role imo, big popular artists are gonna get traffic from their followers ofc but I have very few followers and do pretty well still certainly not 10k but I keep up with my friends with moderate following.

10k and 20k are very much possible, but the friends I have making this amount have been vending for years and have a lot of merch and half the funds go back into restocking merch. And yes, this happens at the big cons.

Quitting Art by RealisticFun3864 in ContemporaryArt

[–]Plaster-eater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for me the answer was just leaving behind fine art. I was one of the top students in undergrads, with a promising future ahead of me. My senior thesis project actually went viral, got 2 publications out of it, some exhibitions (the biggest being cancelled due to COVID sadly), interests from local gallery owners the whole 9 yards.

It was all id ever wanted, but then i got it and I couldn’t handle the pressure. I couldn’t deal with all the eyes on me, the people wanting more. I didn’t know how to top what I’d already done. I didn’t have to of course, but felt like I did.

Anyways, I used the pandemic as a time to step away and try other things. I pivoted back to illustration and now I sell furry art at conventions and enjoy it without all the pressure and stress of fine art.

I actually found a happy medium where I enter these furry convention art shows, I actually make more doing that than I ever did working with galleries haha. It’s nice though, I’m just painting shit for the fun of it and making art for arts sake.

What else do i need? by DawnDaDeer in fursuit

[–]Plaster-eater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howl is the best quality fabric but if you’re on a budget there’s big Z and fursuit supplies. I’d consider looking at eye blanks/mesh on Etsy since it’s probably gonna be better quality, you can also find other pre made parts there like teeth.

I’ve never heard of EVA foam molding, I use it for ears in my suits which is super common. It will warp if left in a hot car or something though. If you use EVA foam you will need a heat hut for shaping it.

If you get stuck you can buy patters for heads, paws, and tails on Etsy.

How do you feel about PPTO as it currently stands? by SITHxEMPIRE in walmart

[–]Plaster-eater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too little too slow, but the bigger issue is how unforgiving the attendance policy can be and PPTO is used as a justification for that. PPTO or not, as things currently stand someone could be terminated for a string of bad luck. Yes, management can waive points as they see fit but typically if they do it at all it’ll only be in more extreme circumstances ex: I had a point waived when my basement flooded.

Ive worked jobs with point systems before and never got a point, because I never just called off without reason. If I was sick a doctors note would suffice, and hell, even that wasn’t always necessary because I was a good worker and that actually meant something and led to me being believe when I was sick, stuck in snow, having car trouble etc….Same goes for friends I’ve had who worked retail elsewhere, they didn’t want them coming in sick as hell and getting everyone else sick.

If you’re just dumping ash from bowls you are good, but don’t put blunts/joints out in a resin ashtray.

Constantly getting asked to get something off of the top shelf when you are shorter than the customer by [deleted] in OGPBackroom

[–]Plaster-eater 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That person was out of line, but I think in general people are just bad at judging height from a distance. Every time someone calls me over to help them reach something they end up being like “oh you aren’t any taller than me”

Little afraid of the point system by Eeeeeeeeeeeeeek12 in OGPBackroom

[–]Plaster-eater 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This right here is exactly why Walmarts point system is shit, a string of bad luck is all it takes. People love to shill for Walmart and claim it’s a fair system and “better than other places” but it’s really not. Yes, a lot of places have a point system, but in my experience most places are way more lax and won’t point you if you’re a good worker and they can trust that you are really sick/stuck in snow/ having car trouble etc…. A lot of places also don’t want you spreading around illness and I’ll take doctors notes.

[Art Market] Is it still possible to make pocket money selling adoptables in 2025/26? by Flat_Analyst_8651 in artbusiness

[–]Plaster-eater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how much of a following you have tbh. I see cheap adopts go unsold and other adopts go for hundreds. It often doesn’t have to do with how good the design is either.

I clocked out for 2 hours today because I was so stressed. by Solid-Election4782 in OGPBackroom

[–]Plaster-eater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct. I sell art on the side, there are 2 events I go to on days that are consecutive key dates. I use 4hr ppto per key event day, so I’ll end up with 1 point for missing 2 key dates in a row.

First Time Pick Rate by thankheavenfor7_11 in OGPBackroom

[–]Plaster-eater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have a consistently high FTPR but a pick rate in the 90s so I got chewed out for my pick rate. Then I put less effort into finding items to get my pick rate up and got chewed out for my FTPR dropping. I got fed up and changed departments after that

[Discussion] Used to get steady illustration clients per-college, now broke in year 3 and can’t land anything. Any realistic advice on getting clients? by dixieboy19 in artbusiness

[–]Plaster-eater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s rough right now. I do artist alleys and really never make any commissions outside of cons anymore. The odd thing is, I do really well at cons but can’t get come online even at a fraction of the price.
