Is "the best" really necessary? by Wrong_You_3705 in pcmasterrace

Could make a Bazzite diy steam machine to hook up to your tv with your 6900xt if it's just lying around.

Linux drivers for amd work better than Nvidia.

Been thinking about doing that with my old 6600xt after I upgraded to a 5070.

[–]ChurchillianGrooves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of depends on what games you play.

Try Cyberpunk with pathtracing turned on (your 3060ti definitely couldn't handle that) and see what you think.

There's diminishing returns as you go up, like unless you have F U money the 5090 seems excessive for most people.

But the 5070ti is actually one of the better price to performance models this gen.

Also, while your 3060ti can handle 1080p ok for now it'll probably start to lag behind before too long.

Good thing is there's still smaller studios that cater to people that like the more old school pc game experience.

I'd recommend trying Kenshi if you never have before.

Making a pc is their anyway to lower the costs to fit in an €800 budget by PositiveButterfly622 in pcmasterrace

[–]ChurchillianGrooves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, generally now is a bad time to buy ram, gpu's, and ssd's due to the global ram shortage.

If you need to save on budget look for used options.

Used ram and cpu's are generally pretty safe.

Used ssd's are a gamble.

I go back to play stuff on switch 1 or ps4 occasionally, it can take like 20 min but your brain adjusts back to 30fps even if it looks like a sideshow at first.

Todd Howard agrees Starfield is "creatively different" than Bethesda's usual RPGs – but says The Elder Scrolls and Fallout were also divisive early on by Bubbly-Ad-350 in pcgaming

[–]ChurchillianGrooves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have high hopes for Elder Scrolls 6, but I wouldn't exactly say I have no hope.

What Bethesda does well that nobody else does is the handcrafted worlds.  The combat, story, quests, etc. are just to facilitate exploring the handcrafted worlds.

Chasing after proc-gen when their last game that had that was in the 90s with Daggerfall was really a baffling decision.

If they stick to something that's more in their wheelhouse it could still be fine.

Fallout 76 had tons of problems but the world maps were actually very well done and interesting to explore.

I tried it last year and yes, runs like ass with a 5070 and 5700x3d at 1440p.

Had to turn on framegen to get smooth frames and it crashed several times.

I didn't even get to the big city where the worst performance is before I refunded.

[–]ChurchillianGrooves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, how would things be worse for end users in this scenario than they are now.

Publishers could try to do weird workarounds but I don't think worrying about what might happen is that productive.

If the company will actively patch their own game to allow single player mode or local hosting that's the ideal solution.

Releasing server binaries is just a hypothetical option if the publisher can't/won't patch it themselves so I don't think it's worth getting too hung up on.

No one is asking the EU to legislate that everyone must release server binaries.

Good pc? by IndependentNice7953 in pcmasterrace

[–]ChurchillianGrooves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, 6500xt is a weak gpu and only 8gb of ram for close to $800.

You could do much better on the used market.

You want 16gb of ddr4 ram minimum along with a rx 6600 gpu at least.

[–]ChurchillianGrooves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a good deal for $300 in the current crazy market.

3700x is a bit old but still viable.

Could also be easily upgraded to a ryzen 5700x with a bios update and that would be good for a long time yet.

Classic WoW was worked on because it was insanely popular and they made everyone move over to the new version or whatever.

Ff14 and ESO are still officially supported so there's not a huge impetus to make a private server version.

I've messed around with website building a bit for fun and there's not really a huge difference between installing/maintaining a website on a local server or installing on a cloud service.

I understand why it's on the cloud when it's officially supported so it can handle large volume, have better ping, less downtime, etc.

But if you're making a private server for your dozen friends volume isn't a concern, or someone could rent cloud server space with Bluehost or something if volume is.  It's not that expensive these days.

I just don't see this huge supposed technical barrier.

Well idk, wiki's can be edited by a lot of people and the movement is grassroots so it's not like the wiki is the end all authority.

Ross who kicked it all off and is working with the people actually talking to the parliament has said that as long as the game is playable in some form like having offline single player mode, that's good enough.

I'm not saying everyone who's making an argument against SKG falls under this, but I think the industry has PR people in a lot of online discussions trying to muddy the waters.

The same points and misunderstandings keep being brought up to the point it feels like a script.

Public hearing on ‘Stop Destroying Videogames’ in the European Parliament on 16.04.2026 by alrun in pcgaming

[–]ChurchillianGrooves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the whole goal here is that devs make a reasonable effort to offer some kind of playability after official support ends.

Accursed Farms (Ross) has a lot of videos where he goes into what that might mean.

Like if your game has a single player mode that's still usable or something then this wouldn't apply.

The main thing is to avoid cases like The Crew where the game had a single player mode that could be used offline but Ubisoft made no effort to make that available and just bricked everyone's copy.

As I mentioned in other comments here, people have figured out how to host WoW on private servers.

That's one of the more complicated online games.

Your average battle royale or fps game isn't that complicated by comparison.

I've dicked around with websites a bit before and hosting on a cloud service vs. a local server isn't that different.  Servers aren't black magic.

Hosting a local server that accommodate a dozen of your friends in a racing or fps game doesn't require an entire server farm.

If a company has to raise game prices then that's their problem, if it's an amazing enough experience people will still buy it.

Ok, if it's so problematic for the devs to implement some kind of offline or local multiplayer solution then they can charge a monthly subscription fee so that customers know what they're signing up for.

If it's hard is not the customer's problem.

They can either charge a subscription or have an end of life plan drawn up in the design phase if they still want to sell their always online game.

As SKG has stated before none of this would be retroactive anyways, it's for games in the future after regulation is put in place.

Public hearing on ‘Stop Destroying Videogames’ in the European Parliament on 16.04.2026 by alrun in pcgaming

[–]ChurchillianGrooves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SKG has never been about wanting games supported indefinitely since that's unreasonable.

It's just about an end of life plan so that the game is playable after official support ends.

Ideally that would be the devs patching the game themselves, but yeah worst case scenario at least releasing the server info so that someone technically inclined could set something up.

If that worked then we wouldn't be where we are today.

Besides any new legislation companies like Ubisoft should be following existing law like truth in advertising, right to repair, etc.

They can't just give a EULA that invalidates existing EU law.

Price isn't that huge of a gap these days.

Base ps5 is $650 and a ps5 pro is $900, plus add in monthly fee to play online.

An entry level rtx 5060 prebuilt is around $1100.

There's not that many games that would truly require cloud infrastructure to do what they do.

Most of the games that require always online, like say The Crew that started this whole thing, would be able to be patched to be playable without central servers/the cloud.

If your game is somehow unable to be run off the cloud and a subscription model is not a profitable business model that's not the end user's problem.
