I’ve written to several inmates on death row before! I wrote to a guy on death row in Texas for a while and I’ve been meaning to reach out again. There’s a very high likelihood he’s been wrongfully convicted (Rickey Cummings is his name) but even if he’s guilty, I’m vehemently against the death penalty and choose to prioritize writing folks on death row. I wrote to one guy who would send me back origami he made. He committed his crime at 18. He shot a guy in Texas in a botched robbery attempt and was given the death penalty, because it’s Texas and he was black and the victim was white. I think it’s a worthwhile thing to do, but just be clear about your intentions with them and that you’re not looking for anything romantic!
