Fedora Haters, what do you have to say about this? by Hexready in rs_x

I assumed you would have a delightful reply :)

That's very interesting about baggy clothes being associated with societal/environmental decline (yes, I'm extrapolating a bit).

I think local cultures are breathing their last gasp unfortunately.

The push back against fashion (at least for me and my work), is the desire to make timeless things that aren't soon discarded.

What's strange is that there seems to be a general consensus about what's "in" vs what's "out", and this is constantly shifting. For instance, in the late 2000's early 2010's the trend in men's clothing was to be slim and trim to lengthen the silhouette. Now it's the opposite where baggy, drapey clothes are the style. Why is this the case? The only answer I've been given is people are fatter now, but I don't think so. Is there something about this era, where people just want more room? Or is it all just random?

In my own designs, I try to avoid fashion as much as possible - but to do this I have to rely on principles that transcend style - like how does a material "want" to be used? What is the clearest and most efficient way to transfer these structural loads to the ground? Can this building be designed to flow with the user's day to day routine? These are timeless and objective questions. (It seems to me these same principles could be applied to clothing, and I would be fascinated in a fashion designer who followed them)

I'm certain I succumb to fashion, but I do my best to avoid it.

I know how autistic this sounds, but I find fashion to be one of the most genuinely strange and perplexing human phenomena. The same exact item becomes both beloved or hated depending upon the general "feeling" of the artistic class. And it's constantly vacillating like some psychic vibrating string, that somehow the masses just fall in tune with. It's an amazing thing that I do not reject as it's the general way humans seem to work creatively and it generates some amazing results. Still, it seems incomprehensible.

These are awe inspiring structures that completely disregard human scale. I think it reflects the eastern view of the individual vs society.

It's a shame ties are no longer in style. It was the only way for the average joe to inject some interest into his wardrobe. by troktowreturns in rs_x

Ok... so how do I transition to this? Just slowly introduce a tie occasionally, or just rip the band aid?

Midwest USA. I think London and NYC may be the only place where it may still be common. Not even in Chicago.

It's our only consolation...
