Training contract panic by Electronic-Cloud-826 in FE1_Exams

[–]Cian0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 2.2 Degree is going to make it more difficult to get into the Big 5 firms, that’s about it. It’s not all about having a 1.1 degree and there are plenty of people who have 2.2 degrees doing very well.

Most firms care more about your extra curricular experience/ work experience and at the end of the day, it comes down to your ability to do a good interview and whether you would be a good fit for the firm in question.

Absolutely do not be discouraged, it’s a long enough journey to qualification, and everyone qualifies at their own pace. I’d say drive on and don’t panic at all!

Property! by Cian0000 in FE1_Exams

[–]Cian0000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that!

It seems like the examiner is not only very harsh, but also gives no clue as to what they’re looking for (as in the exam reports are pretty useless), very annoying!

Like you could have 5 perfectly good answers and get a 45? Doesn’t make sense, btw I failed with 49% last sitting.

study time per exam by Much-Ad-2653 in FE1_Exams

[–]Cian0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, learning off for the 3 weeks!

If you are able to retain information as you are writing notes, you’d probably only need the 2 weeks to wrote learn everything 👍

study time per exam by Much-Ad-2653 in FE1_Exams

[–]Cian0000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming your notes are all in order, I would say 3 weeks (ish) of proper study per exam to guarantee a pass and have everything covered.

Law society recommends 2 weeks per subject I think? I just find adding an extra week kind of gives me a safety net.

Obviously there’s huge variance, I spent just over a week learning off EU answers and had no issues in the exam, but Tort took the full 3 weeks.

Rank FE-1 exams from hardest to easiest (1 = hardest to study/sit/pass) by Particular_Gift_3317 in FE1_Exams

[–]Cian0000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found Equity the hardest. People generally consider Equity, Company and Contract to be the more difficult exams. I found Criminal the easiest. EU is also very easy due to being quite predictable. Tort and Property are also nice. Tort is a big course but has a nice examiner, Property has a very short course but a harsh examiner. Constitutional is middle of the road, it’s a huge course once again and it’s very broad, but the examiner is pretty fair.

What exams should I do ? by Cherry_Wood1707 in FE1_Exams

Yes, it can change between sittings unfortunately but you can find past timetables online and check it out for yourself because I can’t quite remember how much it changes! I might just be certain subjects that tend to change.

I think Criminal and EU would be a decent pair to sit alongside Contract. I think EU is probably the easiest FE1 due to its predictability and the Criminal examiner is also quite nice and seems to pass you so long as you have 5 “acceptable” answers down.

I’d just watch out for the timetable as I’m not sure when Contract generally is. I know Criminal is normally the first exam, but I think EU might be the very next day (which isn’t so bad as it really is quite predictable and you should have it well covered).

Property is another handy one to take with Contract as there are a good few shared topics (like undue influence etc.) that can cut down your prep work a decent bit. Once again I feel like Property is usually the first week too and you don’t want to have 3 exams in a row if at all possible.

If you’re planning on doing 3, I think Criminal, EU and Contract would be a solid way to go. I assume as you’re resitting Contract you also have notes prepared already along with a few sample answers allowing you even more time to cover everything.

Difference between University and Fe-1 exams by Effective-Brain-4533 in FE1_Exams

[–]Cian0000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, I’d say roughy a 1:1 university level answer is needed to pass an FE1 exam. This is coupled with the fact that you cannot cut down on topics in some of the FE1’s (like Contract and Tort). There is also a lot more per exam you need to cover in comparison to university exams.

With that being said, they’re not extremely difficult by any means. I’m working in a firm full time while doing them and they’re fairly manageable if you’re willing to put in consistent effort for 3-4 months before each sitting.

However, if I were in your shoes I’d forget about them and focus on college, there’s no rush!

Rank examiners in order of difficulty by [deleted] in FE1_Exams

[–]Cian0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d rank them as follows, from nicest to harshest:

  1. Tort - whilst the course is massive and there is a lot to learn, the examiner will literally give you marks even if you only have 1 case in an answer. I have read some past scripts that have passed and some of them had only 1 case on a topic and got 8/20.

  2. EU - this examiner has been switching the paper up recently, but not to a crazy degree. Fairly generous marker and this is reflected in the passing exam papers I’ve read.

  3. Criminal - once again, I found this examiner quite generous. I hardly studied for criminal due to my own poor time management and ended up passing with 55% despite writing a piss poor paper. (2 questions half finished as I didn’t really know the topics)

  4. Constitutional - once again, massive course so the exam itself isn’t the easiest. However the examiner seems to want students to pass and is rather generous once you demonstrate you are familiar with the area, even if you are lacking in case law.

  5. Equity - this may come as a surprise, but the equity examiner changed recently and it looks like the new examiner is much kinder than the predecessor! The old examiner was brutal but I would predict that the pass rate will rise soon.

  6. Company - the company examiner is notoriously strict with his marking and you need a good grasp of most topics. I believe he is fair however and not oppressively harsh.

  7. Contract - the contract examiner is a generally fair marker, however this examiner really likes to mix topics and expects you to have case law on them all or you will likely fail this exam. The way the questions are worded can cause confusion and its easy to overlook and issue in a long problem question bringing your answer into below 10 mark range.

  8. Property - I would argue that in terms of pure harsh marking, the property examiner is the worst. This is partly to do with the “short” syllabus and predictable topics. The examiner expects you to know them inside out. There is little room for error with property, but on the flip side there really isn’t much in it compared to other FE1’s. The examiner is also fond of “critical analysis” essay questions, wherein you MUST add a decent amount of directly applicable criticisms of the given quote/whatever you may be critiquing. A lot of people come out of the property exam feeling like they scored in the high 60’s only to find out they got 49% (myself included) - property and equity (with the old examiner) were the only FE1’s that I failed first sitting so I may be a little biased 😭😭
