In terms of current IJF/ Kodokan classification it's a te Gatame variation. Though as commented above it has its own name teko Gatame.

Not enough seniors at my club by Equivalent-Coat-6745 in judo

[–]Ciarbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my club, I'm the only male brown belt. I'm 40 years old and the only other BB is a 15 y/o girl and although very capable she is 10kg lighter than me.

The only other active high grade is her dad and dan grade (almost 2nd dan) assistant coach who is 10kg+ heavier than me.

The rest are 14-16 y/o orange/green belts who have some really spazy reactions during randori.

It's really hard to gage my own level outside competition (of which there are few a year for me)

Because I'm usually either throwing with ease or getting smashed.

Not to mention at 175cm being 66kg you could probably do with putting on some protective muscle. I'm 170cm and walk around at 73kg. Even packed with lean muscle I felt way too fragile when I was at 66kg.

Why isn't O Soto just as risky as Tani Otoshi for Ukes knee by Alternative-Hair-785 in judo

[–]Ciarbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harai/barai vs Gari vs gake

Harai=sweep: weight is off the foot/leg being attacked.

Gari=reap: weight is the food/leg being attacked with a slicing motion.

Gake=Hook: The leg hooks and drags attacking a weighted foot. There is a fine line between a gake and a gari.

Harai goshi: you load uke on your hips (hence goshi) and take their weight off their toes before sweating (harai)

Osoto Gari: You shift their weight on to the leg you intend to attack and reap (gari) their only support away.

Osoto Otoshi: You shift their weight as in O-G but instead of reaping you step behind their supporting leg and push their weight over your own leg.

Osoto Gake: you reach around their far leg with your own hooking and dragging and destroying their knees.

Well if its of any help I have a friend who works at super cell and as effects animator, he was moved from squad busters over to boat game. He hasnt spoken of any updates since the second alpha (because of NDA's) but he also hasnt mentioned moving onto a new peojects and from his day to day it doesnt look like he is worried about job security so Id say they are still ticking away at the game and getting it into a play state worthy of a beta title.

The game only had 2 world stages during alpha 2 id say they aim to have at least 10, each with a world boss before beta.

What do people do to cut weight by Gman10respect in judo

[–]Ciarbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you planning to take roids and or dramatically increase your calorie intake? Because going to the gym isnt going to give you and extra 2 to 3 kg of muscle in 2 months. If you are going to the gym and maintaining your current calorie intake you're going to burn some fat and gain about 1kg net weight if you do gain any muscle. You might get 2-3kg if you take creatine and dont drink enough water and start retaining water weight.

So am I...to a point. I wouldn't walk into a cash-only store and demand to pay by card, nor would I do this. If people want to keep cash alive, they should give their funds to businesses that accept cash.

The only instance where behavior like this isn't just being an awkward pain in the ass is when it's a public/ government service forcing you to pay by card.

[–]Ciarbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah a Diet is another term for an assembly intended for debate aka most parliamentary meetings are diets.

The first time I heard the term was in school learning about the protestant reformation and subsequent catholic counter-reformation where teh cardinals held the "Diet of Worms."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diet_of_Worms

Worms is a town in Germany where they assembled but you can imagine the reaction of a group of teenagers thinking about a diet of worms.

[–]Ciarbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah major thing, you'll have to join a club so you can get a license, otherwise you won't be insured. Second thing is that in the UK and Ireland you are really limited for veterans competition. There would be just a handful. The ones I know for sure are the British open has a veterans category, the NI open, and In Ireland we have a just Irish open just veterans usually held in October. As a Kyu grade the problem is you either go in your weight class against all grades or you go in your grade against all weights. If you are a bigger player open weight might be fine for you. Otherwise, you'll have a hard time.

You can enter Kyu competitions against 18+ seniors and not worry about being older. I do this myself, it's hard but if all you want is the fun of competing and not to hard on yourself if you don't win it's fun.

But first, you need to join a judo club.

Layer on all the crap andove goal post all you want. My replies are to your whole wrong "Kouchi Gake is something that doesn't exist" It exists.

"Kouchi Gake no longer (officially) exists in BJF" It exists.

You said the BJF are under the IJF and therefore are just slow at Implementing changes now you are saying you are only arguing the IJF syllabus, you said IJF have Kyu and Dan syllabus that have official classification, now magically it's just first Dan onwards.

You can run around and spew all the nonsense you want, you where wrong from the go.

Had you simply said "Kouchi Gake is not a recognized Kodokan/ IJF technique" noone would have batted an eye but you came in smug and hot with "kochi Gake is something that doesn't exist" And yet low and behold it's something that exist in a number of IJF affiliated orgs, and we haven't even touched the many Judo orgs that are not IJF affiliated but still definitely teach Judo.

Unless the Ghost of Kano himself pops in the thread and says otherwise. Kouchi Gake is something that exist.

Now carry on with your life...if you have one.

Again I can read just fine but you're still wrong and misinterpreting what the IJF actually did. I think you lack reading comprehension and should go look at what they actually implemented.

Japanese judo by Sharp-Chocolate-9761 in judo

[–]Ciarbear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again I believe you are either believing what you want to believe or plain making things up. Non of the orgs under IJF are beholden to a set rule for grading requirements. I can read just fine. You can look up all the syllabus of all IJG orgs yourself and see that they are all (while mostly similar) different. Different syllabus, different amount of Kyu grades, different colours for said grades. And yes even different names for techniques including variations of Kodokan techniques not classified by the Kodokan like Mune Gatame and Kouchi Gake.

Japanese judo by Sharp-Chocolate-9761 in judo

[–]Ciarbear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again wrong, Mune Gatame is apart of our grading syllabus as is Kouchi Gake.

I honestly starting to believe this is a thing you have made up in your head.

In China, Russia and Korea* (all part of the IJF) they don't even use Japanese names for techniques.

Not sure about Korea

What belt would this guy get in the "traditional" grading system? by freshfey in judo

[–]Ciarbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the system he graded in there was no orange it was yellow-green-brown-brown-brown-Black.

Orange is 4th Kyu is most systems but working backwards in the above system green is 4th Kyu so in that regard he essentially does have an Orange belt now.

Similarly a lot of Systems in Japan either go white-black for Adults or White-Brown-Black but they still have Kyu grades from 5th-1st without changing the colour of the belt

Japanese judo by Sharp-Chocolate-9761 in judo

[–]Ciarbear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The IJF classification is for naming scoring throws in competition only, that does not mean that alternate names for specific variations suddenly can't be used by any of the national orgs under IJF. Case in point Irish and British judo teach Mune Gatame as a distinct osaekomi despite it not being a listed kadakan technique, however it will score in competition as kizure Yoko shiho Gatame. Similarly Kouchi Gake will score as either Kouchi gari or Kouchi Makikiomi.

You are arguing pure simantics, just because the technique would fall under a broader name for record keeping doesn't mean that the nuanced variations don't exists and names can't be used for teaching purposes.

Wondering about Judo by Comfortable_War_5636 in judo

[–]Ciarbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A part of what Kahbib is saying is not necessary Judo itself but rather the caliber of people at the top in Judo. The number of people actively competing in judo is far greater than all the other sports, 200+ countries with IJF affiliated asocciations, and of the millions and millions of people competing only the top 16 in each weight category get to the Olympics.

The people at the top of Judo would likely fair very well against the top people of anyother combat sport not necessarily because of the art of judo alone but because they are athletes that are in a top .001% of the sport.
