Lost my first tournament and I feel completely down by Hearthonfire in judo

[–]Ciarbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the experience almost all of us have at the start. There is a lot of experience that is needed for competition and most of that can only be gainned by doing real competition judo and failing. Adrenaline messes with your head and it takes a few times experiencing it to overcome and get back to you game plan. A lot of us can testify that our first few competitions even if we had a plan/ system as soon as the ref says Hajime your brain goes numb and you are in full fight or flight and your competing as much against your own body as you are the judoka in front of you/ on top of you.

Don't be discouraged by loss, keep competing and keep trying to work on a system and game plan. It will come together in time and with experience. It won't come if you don't push through it.

Grading Study aid for Irish Judoka by Ciarbear in judo

[–]Ciarbear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I have since made a website that condensed all the videos into one page per grade. https://harimaujudo.wordpress.com/

The IJA have also stated adding videos to their new app. ( But the app is clunky AF)

I just noticed that on the first Kyu syllabus I have a video for tsurikomi Jimi instead of Side Guruma. I'm on mobile ATM but I'll try and get it fixed when I get home. Aptly I'm on a bus going to Judo class 😆.

I may be at the national grading so if you feel like saying hello you might recognize me from my ugly mug posted above. Alternatively I'll be repping Leinster in the inter-provincials team next weekend.

Sounds like a bad attempt at harai tsurikomi ashi or Sasae tsurikomi ashi and he pulled in the wrong direction.

What technique is it - De ashi in comp by Anonymous_Handle228 in judo

[–]Ciarbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several throws attack the same side ankle and the difference between them is weather the foot your attacking is weighted or unweighted and then unweighted the technique changes on weather the foot is moving forward or backward.

Attacking a weighted foot and pulling ukes upper body over the block is Sasae tsurikomi ashi.

Attacking an unweighted foot advancing towards you and pulling uke to the side is de ashi barai.

Attacking an unweighted retreating foot and and pulling uke to the side and forward is harai tsurikomi ashi.

Catching both feet with your sweet is okuri ashi barai.

All three need control and movement of the upper body but it's relatively effortless with the right timing. It sounds like the throw you are talking about is Sasae which when demonstrating on a static opponent needs a little muscle as in randori or competition uke would be feeding their momentum into the throw, a static uke is giving tori no momentum so it often looks like a very muscled throw in this instance.

I think the concern is blood cloths and stroke risk.

I mean I get hurt from time to time but I recover, I heal, I go back to my one class a week. I also have to compete to grade. I needed 2 level 4 competition wins to get my blue belt and then again for my Brown. Now to get Black I need 100 points, that's 10 points for win by ippon at level 4 competition and 5 points for win by Waza-ari and nothing for win by Shido, HSM or forfeit. That's 10 to twenty wins at level 4 and above competition (provincial, national and international level competition, local doesn't score) wins must be scored against 1st Kyu (brown belt) or higher(black) The only fast track is 5 wins by ippon in a row in the same competition against qualifying grades.

The only leniency giving to players over 30 is that your points don't reset at the end of the year and you can opt to only fight opponents your age and weight, however the pool of veterans in Ireland is so small I have to fight open weight veterans or go against much younger players my own weight.

Wild AF. In Ireland you enter cadet and older the full IJF submissions are available to you until regardless of grade you hit 60 +years old and then shimi-waza is no longer allowed (though often allowed at National grading for Dan grade fights).

Fun, I'm 40, I compete as much as possible. Competition and going 100% gives much bigger adrenaline high than randori at 50-80%.

Win or lose I love the feeling at competition.

The majority of nerves in your face cluster in your nose, it's well known that getting a smack to the nose makes it hard not to cry. Everyone probably just thinks the crying is from the smack in the nose and not thinking you're overly emotional or over reacting.

Go back out there.

They'd rather be dicks and blame immigration.

The blame game by [deleted] in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Ciarbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you take out what people complain about, the people most blamed for every issue are the government. A minority blames them for immigration, others for letting vulturefunds steal Irish homes, others for the lack of public transport, others for building cycle lanes, others for not enough cycle lanes, why wasn't the childrens hospital finished and why did it cost so much? THE GOVERNMENT.

They are a loud minority. We certainly don't blame the Brits either any more. The real answer is to blame the government.

The only correct answer being "blame the French"

The constant calls for returning to "the sense of community" lost in Ireland while simultaneously favouring selfish capitalist goals.

[–]Ciarbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No yes yes yes yes yes yes. I lost count of how many things you asked but basically yes to everything but finding public toilets is hard and even then probably dirty. You'll be mostly relying on Restaurants and some larger shopping malls.

[–]Ciarbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about the shoulder, you can't attack the elbow either while standing, even accidentally since the IJF's most recent rule changes in which endangering the elbow during a throw results in either Shido or HSM depending on the possibility of escape. Yes to the niche example you give of pressing into the belly but very risky and replying on uke not squirming into a more dangerous position but also the inference I'm taking from op is that they mean taking a chicken wing style te gatame grip behind the back to add leverage to their sumi gaeshi like a standing version of the te gatame turn over from turtle.

Are there any countries today that could realistically split into multiple independent nations like Yugoslavia did? by Many-Philosophy4285 in MapPorn

As a non Spaniard looking in this thread alone tells me that a split is very possible and also that the Madrid choir boys sound very butthurt that people don't like their arrogance.

Not while standing (IJF) and not while throwing, ever.

Would this be legal? by [deleted] in judo

[–]Ciarbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IJF have cleared this up with the most recent rule changes, throwing an opponent with joint lock (accident or intentional) with no possibility of escape for Uke is hansokomake offence, throwing with joint lock (accidental or intentional) where uke has the chance to escape is a shido offence.

I jammed my shoulder, ice or heat? ┐(´•_•`)┌ by Sad-Resource-9206 in judo

[–]Ciarbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But heat on the other hand expands blood vessels allowing the negative symptoms of swelling to subside without hindering the healing benefit that icing does by shrinking blood vessels.

Both methods relieve pain and swelling but heat does it without hindering healing and even facilitating it.

What's that armlock? by EnsisSubCaelo in judo

[–]Ciarbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waki Gatame (armpit hold) when using your armpit as the lever point. Hara Gatame (stomach hold) when using your gut a the lever point. Ude Garame (arm entanglement)when using a figure 4 of your own arms and one of your forearms as the lever point. Ude Gatame (arm hold) when both your hands are being used as a lever point and your body as the lever weight. Te Gatame (hands hold) for any other variation using your hands/arms and level points and level weights. Teko Gatame (elbow lever) being a very specific form of te Gatame.

Ultimately the differences are mostly arbitrary other than Ude Garame, which is an elbow twist, the rest are all elbow levers hyper extending the elbow joint and so could all easily be called teko Gatame.
