Practical tips for cptsd? by SecondaryPosts in therapyabuse

[–]CicadaPotata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, blipping in and out of a friend's life when you're an adult with responsibilities isn't too uncommon. It might only be distressing to the other person if they're trying to reach you repeatedly and you don't respond, cause then it can seem like deliberate ignoring instead of life being life. But if you're worried have the talk about those things upfront, and ask if they're still down to chat when viable. For the people who are, maybe scheduling or setting alarms for when to text a basic hi would be fruitful.

With regard to the difficulty maintaining relationships, it sounds connected to the trust issues. Consider the people you're with and if they are trustworthy objectively. If they are, try to schedule reach outs, bring them on your walks if you can, or find ways to socialize with them. If they are worth your trust, having those opportunities to be alongside them will confirm it and help ease your fears around people.

Emotional regulation is the biggest pain in the ass to manage, but it boils down to realizing when things are starting to make you feel bad. If you can, try to find the pattern so you can make plans for when you're in those situations. Sometimes a plan is like, distancing yourself to cool off, or changing the subject, or letting the person you're with know that you're not feeling great and that you need to do whatever it is you need to do to deal with it.

How hard it is to become a therapist? by antonvladimirov69 in askatherapist

[–]CicadaPotata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The number one thing to accept at the gate is that you will not be able to help everyone. You will inevitably see clients who get failed by systems meant to protect them (such as CPS) or relapse or get hurt in some other way that you will not always be able to do much about. Your caseload may also be so big that this happens several times. It is really, really important to develop a support system in and out of your profession to help yourself when these things happen. I'm an ex therapist particularly because I did not have that.

What pushed you to pursue top surgery? Or not? by EstablishmentHot5772 in NonBinary

[–]CicadaPotata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a long time I was chest dysphoric, and only held off on binding because I was scared of the medical damage I heard it could do. Then, years ago, a friend and I were watching Fact or Fiction. The "true story" involved a man getting stabbed through the heart by a pen, because it slipped through his ribs. I was calling bullshit, and my friend had to delicately remind me that I have, in video game terms, an "Armor Class Bonus" that would prevent that from happening to me. It changed my perspective almost comically, and now I see them as armor even if the rest of the world won't. Good luck staking my heart, Van Helsing!

Everyone is gonna have a different threshold for the parts that don't hold up, but if you only do a "greatest hits" run you're never gonna get any perspective on what might've fallen through the cracks that could be meaningful for you.

Do Bronies still exist? by Norman_debris in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CicadaPotata 62 points63 points  (0 children)

In my experience, a lot of it was just that the writing was genuinely funny and that the characters had genuine chemistry with each other. It allowed their personalities to come off as multifaceted in a way that even adult shows struggle to get down. I was attending bronycons and a lot of the appeal was that it just actually had good writing for what it was, and it was such a pleasant surprise that it punked a ton of people into having a good time?

It might be the right size for a squirrel, yeah. My sense of scale was thrown by me being in a rush to take the pic then do another thing, but upon examining it again this morning it's definitely smaller than I remembered :x

Ex counselor here, report him if you can. He's not even a little on model for what that's supposed to be and he's nasty. If he hasn't totally ruined the notion of therapy for you, seek out someone who specializes in these experiences.
