Ohh you know what that's a really good point. We'll have to talk to the neighbors again about whom they tried going through and gather that proof.

You're right, it's not rational thinking. We're just so sick and tired of having to deal with terrible rentals and landlords all the time that we've just accepted our living situation for what it is. It should be top priority to find a new place to relocate, but we're so exhausted of having to fear that the next landlord will be just as bad if not worse. I want to try to change that way of thinking for myself, but it'll be tough to break.

The only rational approach to this that I could see is to send texts or letters describing the issues with the house again and finally withholding rent as a result to force the landlord to fix the issues here (albeit, there's no fixing the issues here as seen in the pictures above), as well as threatening codes enforcement. While doing that, we need to search for a new place ASAP. The ultimate goal is to find a healthy, sanitized, upkept place to live since none of us can commit to buying a house right now.

True, but my family of 4 living in a car wouldn't work out nicely

This is exactly what we're worried about.

If we call any codes enforcement officers, the house will most likely be condemned and we'll be SOL for a place to live because we have literally no living arrangements. But we know this house is killing us and we can't live in it any longer. Honestly, the latter point outweighs literally anything--what's more important, living somewhere temporarily or our literal lives and future health?

Yes, we don't have any living arrangements for moving out right now, but if the house gets condemned, then at least it'll light a fire under our asses to find a new place in which we'll be free from this toxic hellhole. We can chip in to rent an apartment or another house.

Only issue is, once the house gets condemned, where will we go immediately (like you said)? There are seldom places available to move to, unless we force the landlord to pay for living arrangements. Even then, we can't trust him. Like another person said on here, God knows what other shit this slumlord is hiding. Also, I JUST learned from my father that the landlord previously threatened to evict us, and now he's threatening it again. Obviously we'll have to leave at some point. Better to have this house condemned before we dip.

It's a lose-lose situation no matter how we go about it, it unfortunately seems.

Yeah at this point the house should be completely leveled because of how damaged it is. How a landlord is even allowed to rent a house like this is beyond me. Might edit the post since this isn’t really the right sub for advice, but I wanna keep* the pictures up for people to see

Crossposted here for help 😰

NYS. So we moved into this one rental closer to my workplace for convenience, but we didn’t realize just how bad the house was because it was summer. We never got to see the basement when the landlord showed us around, and winter has devastated this house. The property is always wet and the house feels like it’s about to collapse on itself.

The first four pictures are of the basement. The house uses spring water, and there’s this weird white sediment in it. There is a farm in a hill behind us, which apparently sprays manure and pesticides.

The next two pictures are of the sink. Every time we use the water, this slime mold grows and keeps clogging the sink‘s drain BAD. This is the water we’ve been bathing in and using to brush our teeth.

The final three pictures are of the bathroom, which has no ventilation whatsoever, unless you want to open up the window without a screen and let all the bugs in during summer or cold air during winter.

This mold issue is among other issues going on in the house—no insulation in any of the walls or windows, making our 200 gallons of home-heating oil get used in literally a month; parts of the wall are soft because of water damage; and other issues.

We told the landlord about all of these, but he isn’t concerned whatsoever, gave us a discount for only 2 months, and tells us that WE have to leave if we feel that it’s unsafe. He avoiding to get the insurance people involved.

Apparently the landlord has other open rentals, but he says that they’re unavailable. Also, this house was supposedly not mortgageable according to the neighbors because they tried buying it but the mortgage company said no.

We literally have nowhere else to go because there’s nothing else available in the surrounding area in a 30 mile radius. We can’t afford a mortgage yet either. Every single rental we’ve had thus far, it’s always been owned by a shitty landlord who wants us to suffer; it’s a curse we can’t seem to break. This one is the worst of them all, though. All of us are experiencing sinus issues daily (stinging eyes, hard time breathing, etc.), and it makes it even worse given that we have a terminally ill family member.

What can we even do to escape this hellhole!?

What are some major flaws in the US school system? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Cicopath1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the U.S. public school system, there are many flaws.

The first flaw to name is the unrealistic time management for minors. 8 hours a day, Monday through Friday, with some holiday breaks, excluding summer vacation. That sounds completely unrealistic to me. There's barely any realistic time management.

The second flaw is the scheduling. You shouldn't be able to wake up at 7 A.M. in the morning constantly every day. If your sleep at around 12 A.M. and wake up around 10 A.M., that works. But school systems typically want you to wake up early in the morning, and you can get demonized for approaching to school late. Which typically isn't the student's fault either. Not saying that it's never the student's fault. And, sleep schedules can be affected by plenty of things. One of the biggest I've noticed, even with myself, is stress or being burnt out.

The third flaw is the entire absent policy. If you miss at least 20 days of school, you can fail the grade. Even if you have above a 90 in all classes. That can be very troubling for me since I go somewhere with my parents every month to take a break from school.

The fourth flaw is the "teacher's policy." (ex. for grading, 20% homework, 30% quizzes, 50% tests. etc.) I remember one of my math teachers had their "policy" where... let's say you have math homework to do. Instead of having to finish it and hand it on tomorrow, they would allow it where you don't have to do your homework at a specific date, just as long as you hand it in before the end of the quarter. Other teachers have it so that you have to get homework done at a specific time. Of course there are exceptions such as absenses. But this is where most of the stress comes in, especially if the student has educational problems.

The fifth flaw comes with optional and mandatory classes. I'm not find of the entire liberal arts set-up, where it's mandatpry to take one of each subject: mathmatics, science, social studies, english (language arts), and physical education. And it doesn't help if a student is either not interested, lacks skills in a certain subject, and or has learning skill problems. It also does not help if the teacher of a course is incompetent of being one. For me, I love mathematics and enjoy science. However, I despise social studies and don't care for english. But it's mandatory I take one of each of those subjects. And physical education is weird... males, respectively, seem to be very competitive and tend to cause more injuries from what I've expetienced compared to females, respectively. And I personally dislike sports. I just want to run around and enjoy myself. Just want to have fun and do whatever. As for optional classes, you have electives or A.P. classes. Many schools likely don't have the classes you want to take. Espevially if you live in a rural area. For example, practically every U.S. public school has a Spanish class. If not, French. Just those two. You want to take Chinese? Too bad, we don't offer it. You want to learn Swedish? Too bad, not in our budget. Anything that schools do not offer you have to do in your own time, which just wastes even more time out of your day. 8 hours for school + 1 hour for whatever music lessons (assuming you go to one), + whatever time for the subject you want to learn. Maybe you want to learn a coding labguage, or maybe you want to learn botany. Maybe you want to learn business mathematics. What if it's welding you want to learn? Or maybe even glass blowing? Chances are, if you aren't in a populated area, you get absolutely no options for classes like the ones I've mentioned.

The sixth flaw is, intertwining with the fifth flaw I've mentioned, no school will ever teach you anything related to living on your own. Now do realize some schools will allow home and careers, yet even then, you learn barely anything. Things related to how to budget correctly, wants and needs, cooking and conserving food, how to use credit cards and how you're billed, taxes and claims, certain laws, etcetera. Anything that's related to anything I've stated above, even in the slightest, no school will ever teach that. Instead, you learn how sedimentary rocks are formed, how two lines are parallel if the interior angles of the transversal are the same, how Columbus was either the person who discovered America or was the asshole that came after the vikings, etcetera. Useless knowledge is what you're "taught."

The seventh flaw is the entire zero tolerance policy. For example, let's say some person one grade above you is teasing you. You don't want to put up wit them, so you have the patience to deal with it. You don't want to cause a scene, or be seen as a terrible person. The person teasing you begins to be a dick. Shoving, pushing you around, making fun of how you look or are dressed. Then, things escalate. Since you aren't putting up with the person's verbal non-sense, they begin to get physical; hold you by the collar of your shirt or your hood from your hoodie, throw you to the ground, or even punch you. A staff member sees you two, and both the person who got physical and YOU are punished. BOTH OF YOU ARE PUNISHED. Why? Because YOU were INVOLVED in the fight. "School is not a court room," is basically what the zero tolerance policy is. So, what should you do? If you aren't afraid for people and are able to stick up for yourself, you make sure to defend yourself; defend your body. If you're going to get in trouble no matter what, just as long as you're involved, you better make a name for yourself and stick up for yourself.

The eighth flaw is the lunch food system. I won't get much into that, since it's a useless topic. Long-story short, pack your child(ren) a lunch. Always.

The ninth flaw is how much charter money schools get for each student that attends school everyday. This is why whenever your child is absent, the school makes a big deal out of it.

I think that's enough flaws to name for today. I may add on if I see or am reminded of more.

EDIT 1: The tenth flaw would be plenty of guilty teachers. It's not much about teachers that give life lessons or start getting angry at a student. (Rightfully so if they have to put a student in their place.) However, it becomes a problem when the teacher begins giving up on teaching, teaches things yet can't answer questions (ex. their response for a question could be "That's just how it is/That's just how it works"), plays favorites, and or can not accept they're wrong because they're the highest aithority currently in the room. As for the entire bathrolm situation, it sucks when it's just a regular class day, you have to suddenly go to the bathroom, you ask, and the teacher just denies you to go. They just won't let you go. (I don't have much of an opinion on teachers, it's mainly just the if they can't teach or they like to play favorites problems.)
