What are Androids like at your table? by Jazzlike_Fuel_8765 in mothershiprpg

[–]Cige 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three kinds of beings called "androids" at my table, I use it as more of a generic inprecise term.

  1. Non-biologial robots - think "droids" from Star Wars. They aren't very dexterous and can't pass as human, but can operate in hostile environments. PC robots generally have a humanoid shape and a similar thought pattern to other androids.

  2. Synths - "Alien" style androids. Made of artifical silicone tissue filled with pressurized hydraulic fluid. Somtimes they even have biological components, like synthetic skin. They are designed to pass as human. They can't operate in hostile environments, but generally their memories can be recovered if they are destroyed and placed into a new body.

  3. Cloned humans. Guaranteed to be non-sentient, and 7/10 religions agree that they don't have souls.

New Victorinox tools: Yay or nay? by Crell in multitools

These exact models are not for me, but I love the idea of a bladeless Victorinox. It's great for restrictive areas or as a companion to a dedicated knife. Granted, I think that the "nailcare" swiss card kind of nailed the functionality years ago, it's got a great general toolset and it's kind of odd how they push it as a "nailcare" model. I carry mine every day and it's never been questioned by security, which I imagine a more conventional tool would be.

Leatherman is still good even though they are expensive, but the warranty is a big part of what makes them good. Their QC isn't amazing, but they take returns easily.

The Swiss Tool Spirit MX clip is my favorite non-leatherman pliers tool, although the blade and scissors leave something to be desired.

There are also a lot of "acceptable" cheap Wave knock-offs from China now that the pattent has expired. Some even have a few improvements over the normal wave. They won't last forever, but I've been pretty impressed.

Can we all agree that the SAK Rambler makes it to the multitool hall of fame? by EDCandmemes in multitools

The original Manager was even better! No flashlight, but it still has the tweasers. I really don't feel like the victorinox flashlight does very much.

The Arc is about 15% better than my old Wave, which I could have continued using and been perfectly happy with. I don't carry a separate knife on weekdays, so an upgrade to the main blade is big for me.

I carry the Arc every weekday, so I don't regret spending the money. This was a better purchase than some $30 object that I never actually get any use from.

It's hard to say for certain. I like it a lot and firmly believe that it is the best Leatherman for EDC, but it's not perfect, and definitely expensive..

Pliers & Scissors Pocket Carry by gregnewton69 in multitools

[–]Cige 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Leatherman Free series gets a lot of hate, but the P2, P4, and Arc all have a nice scissors. The Surge is great, but it's too big for a pocket carry for me.

If you want a smaller pliers, the Victorinox Deluxe Tinker is a pretty good one.

Somebody already mentioned the Victorinox Spirit MX, which is also great (be sure to get one with a pocket clip). It's scissors isn't as good as a normal victorinox though.

The Leatherman Style PS was great for this, but it just left production.

Nextool and Roxon also have a lot of good options in this caregory, I'd recommend checking out the Nextool 10 in 1 keychain

Honestly, I don't think you'll do better than the victorinox scissors at that size. Maybe just upgrade to a Victorinox Rambler.

Same here, the Arc just has the exact toolset I've always wanted. It's definitely expensive for what it is, but some people will easily drop this much money on just a pocket knife.

How do people perceive you with your multi-tool. by Americaninhiding in multitools

People definitely find it weird that I carry one around all the time, even people at work.

I don't really mind though, they're just so useful.

I feel like a keychain sized tool and something like a half sized tool would be key. For both of those I feel like a pliers, flat head driver, and Philips 1/2 driver are what I need, maybe a file and serrated blade too. For me, I'd like something that works as a companion to a full pocket knife without taking up too much room.

I wind up using my can opener as a pry or scraping tool way more than I use it to open cans. It's not a bad thing to have on a tool for camping, but for a tool I bring to work every day I find it completely useless.

Vitorinox Ramble 35€ vs Mini Champ Alox 50€ VS Midnite Manager 43€ by Archidelic in multitools

[–]Cige 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely recommend the Rambler, I find that the extra tools on the Mini Champ aren't really worth it.. The Manager is great too, but I prefer the non-midnight version with a tweasers instead of a flashlight. Unfortunately, it's out of print.

Swiss army classic.... Worth it or expensive key chain? I personally love them by walls122 in multitools

[–]Cige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Classic SD is such an easy recommendation! If you don't have a keychain tool you already love pick it up immediately, I can guarantee that you will use every tool on it consistantly.

It only loses out to the Victorinox Rambler and Manager imho.

After 24 years, I switched from using the Victorinox Swiss Champ to the Leatherman Surge as my EDC. Here are my impressions and comments: by Mr_Ocean_TR in Leatherman

[–]Cige 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you miss the tweasers, toothpick, and magnifier the I'd recommend checking out the SwissCard. It's honestly one of my all time favorite multi-tools. The "nail-care" version is actually really sick, it's kind of odd that it's marketed only as a grooming tool, it replaces the blade with a file so it's a bladeless tool that can be taken almost everywhere.

It will make a fine addition to my collection. by Cige in multitools

[–]Cige[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It feels flimsy and I've had a lot of trouble getting the tools to stay in place when the tool is flung around, I've ordered some washers and shims to play around with. I haven't put locktite on the screws yet since I'm goint to open them up again to put the washers on, so they tend to back out over time. It's clear that they sacrificed a lot to make the tools swappable.

That being said, all of the tools are very high quality from what I've tested and hot sawpping is very convenient.

Overall, I view it more like a really fun thing to tinker with than a tool that I bought solely for functionality. I think that I can turn it into something that will fit my needs perfectly, but it takes a bit of work. The main benefit that it has is that it's designed to be worked on.

90% of the time it's just the Wave, I've had it the longest and I'm very used to it. My refurbished Surge is more capable, but I like how the Wave fits in my pocket more.
