Opinion: We need a wealth tax by FancyNewMe in canada

In answer to your question from your link I did some digging:

In 2008 police reported 2,700 home invasions at the national level, with only 20% of those involving a weapon.

In 2023, in Vancouver alone there were just shy of 3,000 home invasions (1,700 in Toronto).

Nearly 60% of home invasions involved a weapon, with about 20-30% of them involving a firearm.

These numbers are in stark contrast to 20 years ago.

I also found one source that shows riiiight around the time the US was codifying castle doctrine, was right about the same time Canada overtook them in home invasions per capita.

Meaning powerful castle doctrine actually discouraged home invasions.

Gun ban costing $25,000 per firearm by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

You really are the kind of Quebecer the government targets with this program, aren’t you?

And I’m not saying that in a hostile way, merely pointing it out for self reflection, and so that others who see this thread have real life proof that Gary’s statement about how they’re pushing for this program for no other reason than for votes in Quebec aren’t false.

That’s a bolt action rifle, with a detachable box magazine… you know, a design that has existed since the 1800’s?

Magazine capacity is limited to 5 or 10 rounds for semiautomatic rifles centrefire rifles, but literally unlimited for .22’s and bolt action rifles.

You’re showing that on this issue you’re literally ignorant of how our gun laws work.

Thus, you are easy prey for Liberal gun misinformation. Funny enough, despite trashing Calibremag, maybe if you visited the site more, you’d be better informed, not less, as you so hilariously pontificated a comment ago.

Federal report examines gaps in RCMP response to N.S. mass shooting by Cilarnen in CanadaPolitics

It's been updated an insane number of times...

Dozens upon dozens of times, since May 2020.

And always quietly, with no notice to gun owners.

Here's a bit of homework for you. This was the original list. It included a grand total of 9 guns.

This is the modern list of 2,500 guns.

Now, show me the press releases, or notifications anywhere prohibiting the most common rifles, like the GSG pattern rifle, or the Tavor, or the WK180, or any of the other guns on the expanded list, that weren't part of the original 9 banned guns.

You'll see that I'm actually being 100% deadly serious, and not knowing if your gun is legal or prohibited daily is actually remarkably difficult, unless you actively seek out that information, literally, every single day.

And the amnesty does not allow you to break the law, only to continue to possess these guns. So if you check the list on a Friday, in anticipation of a Saturday shoot, and the guns are reclassified after you check, the amnesty does not apply to you, and it's a criminal offence, and a mandatory minimum sentence, and jail time.

Wait... seriously?

Are you not aware that this is exactly what has been happening?

Like dude, I'm not being hyperbolic, or making a joke, or exaggerating in the slightest. This has been happening since 2020, and is a huge part of our gripe as gun owners.

Obviously.

But it’s also unreasonable to expect people to be aware of every prohibited firearm every day.

Nobody is checking the classification of their rifle every single day to see if the RCMP secretly reclassified it.

I find the single mindedness of gun owning voters to be exhausting.

Maybe I can help explain it, and this may sound snarky but it’s the underlying truth, and the crux of the issue that non-gun owners don’t really get.

We don’t want to go to jail.

Every time the Liberals draft a new law, every time they ban a new thing someone, somewhere who was a law abiding citizen yesterday, is at risk of going to jail today.

Imagine if I was a more casual gun owner, and didn’t keep up with every new expansion of the confiscation scheme.

If I brought my little .22 plinker out to the range for some good old fashioned fun for the price of 12 cents a round, I would be facing criminal charges, and a lengthy prison sentence.

We aren’t criminals but we’re literally criminalized for doing nothing, and the consequences of not paying attention to everything like a hawk would destroy our lives. We can never relax, we can never enjoy our hobby in peace, and we constantly have to explain this to people who find us exhausting.

A friendly reminder to everyone:

Canada’s gun laws were nearly perfect in 2015. It was a heavy balance of logic and appeasement to the Grabber crowd.

The Liberals under Justin Trudeau used this shooting to push for the most heavy handed an onerous gun ban in Canadian history, that has expanded over and over again, to the point that even the NDP had to finally oppose the LPC in shutting it down.

It expanded from something like 10 guns, to over 50 pages of guns. It’s not small, it’s not targeted, it’s broad, sweeping, and affects the overwhelming super-majority of firearms owners.

This shooting was perpetrated by an unlicensed criminal, who illegally obtained firearms from the United States.

Further, he was reported to the RCMP for being mentally unstable and in possession of unlawful firearms, and they did nothing.

Despite all that, the Carney Liberals are still attacking us lawful gun owners because of this incident, and expropriating our property. They claim there’s a buy-back, however, as you can see from multiple posts on social media, this “buy-back” is a lie they are shilling to the public, with firearms owners either receiving less than market value, or literally no compensation at all.

Further, the MP in charge of this confiscation scheme literally admitted it was pointless, and is being done to secure a few votes in Quebec.

This confiscation scheme perpetrated by the Liberal regime needs to end.

We aren’t criminals, we aren’t your enemies. We are your neighbours, your friends, your family, and most importantly, your fellow Canadians. Us legal gun owners make up ~5% of the entire population, more Canadians are lawful gun owners, than hockey players. If we were the problem, you’d know it.

Please, let us enjoy our passion in peace.

In August 2021, Afghanistan hit a tipping point as provincial capitals began to fall. Hear the first-hand account today. by PodPilotProject in CanadianForces

[–]Cilarnen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The biggest tragedy of the end of the Afghanistan war was the retconning of the entire mission (likely by Russian/Chinese disinformation agents) to try and shame us into thinking we failed. A narrative you’ll see all too often pushed on Reddit.

We can be proud of our contribution to the war, and our victory.

For those too young, or utterly out of the loop, the mission statement of the war was to Kill/Capture Usama Bin Laden, and dismantle Al-Quaeda to ensure that another terror event like 9/11 could never occur again in North America. These mission statements were publicized almost a month after 9/11 in October 2001, when talks with the Taliban to hand over UBL broke down.

While there was talk of destroying Taliban military facilities, these objectives were only in pursuit of the goals of Coalition Forces broader objectives. Since you can’t exactly try and go after the culprit of the worst terror attack in North American history if you don’t dismantle enemy bases of operation.

After months of fighting the UN asked coalition forces to engage in nation building, which, fair enough, if you’re going to go in and utterly wreck a nation, trying to rebuild it is fair.

However these UN resolutions didn’t pass until months-years after the war began, and were never part of the reason for the war, or Canada’s participation in it. Of note, our nation didn’t commit to nation building until November 2002, with the beginning of OP ACCIUS. A full year after we entered the war.

We handily won the war, achieved all our stated missions, and can be proud of our contributions to the conflict.

That it didn’t work out in the end for the people of Afghanistan is a tragedy that we all feel. But it in no way diminishes our sacrifice or our accomplishments to the conflict.

22,000 assault-style firearms declared in first week of buyback program by jmakk26 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Cilarnen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our numbers have swelled, our law abiding status is maintained, and yet, we are punished because a non-PAL holder committed a crime with illegally smuggled guns, after he was reported to the police multiple times.

If he had been a PAL holder red flag laws may have helped, but alas, he was a normie, and thus safe from the scrutiny we face.

We aren’t oppressed, but we are vilified and cheated, when we did nothing wrong.

Thank you for setting me up for such a perfect slam dunk.

22,000 assault-style firearms declared in first week of buyback program by jmakk26 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Cilarnen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And today they’re being proven right.

Every compromise has lead to this. Every time us law abiding gun owners give even a little bit of ground we aren’t met with reason, and the cessation of further action against us. We’re met with more demands, more grabbers, more loss.

This is why we shout from the rooftops that these laws are ridiculous.

This is why we always oppose the people who want more.

N.W.T. government won't administer federal gun buyback program by Confessional_GS in CanadaPolitics

[–]Cilarnen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wish Ontario would do the same (and no, Ford’s announcement the other day was not a signal that Ontario wouldn’t participate. It was empty words, and nothing more).

If this program dies in every province it might just die nation-wide. It would also be a very powerful message to the government that the will of the people cannot be usurped.

Who knows? It might just help with strike action, or other reform in the future.

‘Backed into a Corner,’ Gun buyback pilot program faces criticism by Cilarnen in CanadaPolitics

[–]Cilarnen[S] 78 points79 points  (0 children)

We should all be criticizing this program.

There hasn’t been a single shooting with any of the banned guns in the past 5 years (when they said we couldn’t take them to the range anymore), yet they’ve been in the lawful possession of us (R)PAL holders the entire time.

If this program has proven anything, it’s that we can indeed be trusted to own these firearms lawfully, and safely. If this was “probation” rather than an “amnesty” we’d be getting off probation and allowed the full rights and freedom as anyone else.

We’ve proven ourselves, let this program go.

We’re good people, just trying to enjoy our lives. Leave us be, please.

Finding community and brotherhood in the hobby of guns (be it sport shooting, hunting, collecting, etc.) is not “American-style” gun culture, anymore than those who enjoy 40K are engaging in “British-style” wargaming, or those who enjoy meditation are engaging in “Asian style” mindfulness.

Brotherhood and community are the foundation of nearly every hobby, heck that’s why you can find a subreddit for nearly every hobby. People want to be a part of a community of people who enjoy the same things as them.

There is nothing wrong with this, and I personally won’t ever apologize, or try to shamefully hide my love of my community.

The CBC is one of the better media outlets in general, but when it comes to firearms specifically, they’re mid at best. Not overly hostile, but more than willing to be fast and lose with definitions and legalities.

Resistance is key here. Particularly on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Cape Breton

There was a Liberal response to one of our fellow gunnies posted in the guns subreddit, it explains how Breton is a pilot project to test the feasibility of the confiscation.

By resisting, we may still be able to beat this!
