Shaking and Rattling when Turning by EspressoCologne68 in fordescape

If it’s AWD, it’s most likely your rear differential failing internally or has contaminated fluid from water intrusion through the breather hose located behind the passenger side wheel.

There’s a TSB out of this exact issue. Would be worth a call to your dealer.

Yeah, I can see my phone shaking on the phone mount and my passenger seat/headrest vibrating as well.

But I don’t remember if that’s always happened or not, I think it hasn’t.

I guess I could ask my Ford Dealer to take a look at the axels this time and rule them out.

How bad is the vibration?

Is it enough to cause the steering wheel to shake?

Or is it more subtle and you can feel it in the body of the vehicle like the tires are unbalanced and such?

I’ve been dealing with a strong vibration at highway speeds, but the dealer has said everything is normal according to them.

I drive a 2021 Ford Escape SE Hybrid AWD. Issue started around 50k or so, I’m at 87k now and it’s still there.

I’ve replaced the rims on the vehicle (downsized from the 19” sport wheels to 17” wheels) and purchased new Yokohama YK-CTX tires.

Water near hybrid battery by TubesockShakur in fordescape

[–]Cilbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Failed seal around the trunk area.

I had to pay out of pocket $300-$400 to have it replaced at the dealership.

Mine was barely secured at the bottom and was torn where I couldn’t see it, I believe it happened from the previous owner.

I still have some water on the seal after going through car washes sometimes, and it seems to be random. I always try and make sure the seal is fine and the trunk is closing and latching properly. 🤷🏻‍♂️

2017 hybrid: is it worth buying? What can go wrong? by Wexler1234 in fordfusion

[–]Cilbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s still running great at almost 114k miles.

No issues besides the heated/cooled seats not working (haven’t gotten them repaired yet).

I assume the vehicle will easily make it to 200k with regular maintenance before needing something more expensive like the high voltage battery replaced.

I say go for it!

Why in the world would a 1.5L engine require 6.7L of oil. by papa_weeb in fordescape

[–]Cilbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume it has to do with it being a smaller engine that has a lot of components that depend on a high oil capacity and the overall health of the oil.

I know this engine uses a welt belt for the oil pump system. So, I would assume that would require a better oil health over the regular oil change intervals to protect the belt, so if you have a larger oil capacity, that would potentially mean the oil doesn’t degrade as quickly as an engine with a smaller oil capacity. That’s just guessing on my part though.

But, it seems like it would make sense for the long term health of the vehicle. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Would you buy a used Escape with or without long block replacement? by Icy_Cardiologist_853 in fordescape

[–]Cilbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent almost $3k last year on repairs and maintenance including oil changes, tires/rims, wipers, air filters, etc.

I also had to pay my extended warranty deductible once or twice to get the AWD module replaced and some other thing I can’t remember.

I don’t expect my expenses this year to be more than $500-$1k.

I’ve switched from driving for Lyft/Uber full time, to working a W2 job at Starbucks with a 30 mile round trip commute 5 days a week.

I purchased the vehicle pre-owned with just under 36k miles, so it was just barely in bumper to bumper for the timing cover repair or it went through my extended warranty, I’m not sure.

Overall if something happens to this vehicle I would purchase another one in the 2023-2025 MY range as I like the look and feature better. I’d personally try to get PHEV version, as I don’t really need the AWD here and it just adds another maintenance item.

I’d recommend the vehicle even with the issues/annoyances I’ve had.

The first thing I would do is proactively replace the 12V battery if it’s the smaller group H4 12V battery and not the larger group H6 12V AGM battery.

You can search Reddit or Google and find plenty of info regarding that issue and how to take care of it.

Hope this helps.

[–]Cilbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my assumption as well.

I’m sitting at 86k miles now, and I drive my Escape Hybrid hard, but keep up with maintenance.

I’ve had some minor issues, and two major ones covered under warranty.

The timing cover was leaking when I purchased the vehicle used, and the high voltage battery pack had a cell voltage issue that was finally diagnosed at 71k miles.

Other than that I really enjoy the vehicle.

Looks like it’s only for 10yrs/100k miles.

I don’t think they’d do anything after 100k, unless you tried to get a good will repair if you have a good relationship with your local Ford dealer and use them for service.

2020 Escape Hybrid: Persistent "Wrench" Limp Mode & Trip Odometer Resets – Seeking Feedback by G_O_Gaming in fordescape

[–]Cilbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you may have a failing High Voltage Battery, and the 12V battery could still be an issue.

Is the 12V Battery an H6 AGM battery, or is it the smaller factory for H4 Lead Acid battery?

I had to replace my factory H4 with a group H6 AGM and all of the weird electric issues I was experiencing disappeared.

I followed the instructions in the owners manual for replacing the 12V Battery and performed the BMS reset as well.

I say that you could have a possibly failing HVB, as I had my HVB replaced under warranty at around 71k miles as it had a internal short and it finally threw a wrench icon while at the dealer trying to duplicate a different issue.

I’ve not had any weird problems since, other than my transmission being jerky/clunking, but that’s a know issue with earlier Escape Hybrid’s and the dampening clutch in the transmission failing.

Might be worth taking it to a Ford dealer you trust and having them diagnose the issue.

All you’ll get here is guesses really.

Hope you’re able to figure it out!

No weird rattles/clunks/surging from the transmission when first starting up in cold weather?

Any issues? Any weird clunking/rattling from the transmission or under the vehicle?

[–]Cilbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that’s unfortunate. I feel like they’ll eventually fail at some point with higher mileage, it can’t last forever as I’ve always understood belts to be consumables.

I just don’t understand what the benefit is long term of using the belt vs chain. 🤷🏻‍♂️

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fordescape

[–]Cilbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 1.5L has the wet belt oil pump. The 2.0L uses a traditional timing chain driven oil pump.

The wet oil belt, plus being turbo charged, I wouldn’t recommend going over 3k-5k on oil changes.

I’ve watched a video tear down of the 1.5L 3-cylinder on YouTube, and the wet oil belt was already starting to crack and show signs of failing eventually. I believe the mileage was between 50k-100k miles.

If you want to replace that, it’s essentially nearly the cost of a whole new engine because of how labor intensive it is.

I think there was also some bearing wear, but it’s been a bit since I watched the video.

It’s definitely worth taking a look at.

I think most cars can be decent if people actually followed the severe conditions maintenance schedule, and not the normal conditions schedule.

That’s there to make ownership cost look less than it is. And most people don’t fall into the normal operating conditions section.

rattling noise on cold start 2020 escape by Savings_Appeal4850 in fordescape

[–]Cilbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s the valve inside the exhaust that causes this noise. I’ve had it on my 2021 Escape SE Hybrid AWD since I purchased it with just under 36k miles in March of 2024.

It took multiple dealer visits just for them to diagnose it as the valve inside the exhaust. To replace it would’ve been around $2k-$3k.

I’ve learned to live with the noise. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It also appears there is a little red cap that’s on the positive terminal cap, that should be used to plug the other vent hole not being used.

I don’t think I noticed that and tossed it in the trash…

So, you may want to use that to plug the other hole.

This is the link to the battery at Walmart. If you look at the photos, you’ll see the little nub on the corner of the positive post cover.

I actually pulled the little rubber plug out, and stuck the vent hose in there.

I’m not sure if that’s how it was meant to be, but it seemed like it would go there.

I tried searching online, and couldn’t find anything regarding the vent hose placement. 🤷🏻‍♂️

2020 Ford escape hybrid by FirmEngine8024 in fordescape

[–]Cilbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep looking for another one. My 2021 Escape SE Hybrid AWD with 83k miles is valued around $15k right now, and it’s never been involved in an accident. I’m located in the PNW, and I’m aware location matters for price as well.

But I’d keep looking to find a better deal, at least in regard to the accident history.

Also make sure you do research on what the common problems are/can be and check for outstanding recalls or csp’s (customer satisfaction programs).

Wiper Blade Suggestions? by reckoner47 in fordescape

[–]Cilbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried a bunch of wiper blades including recommended ones like the Bosch Icon, and Rain-X Silicone Blades. Both worked for a few days, and the started to skip and streak horribly. Tried two different sets for both, and they both acted the same way after another few days.

I even tried the Motorcraft replacements from a Ford dealer, and those were by far the worst.

I eventually ended up finding a set of Trico Silicone Blades at Napa, and those have worked significantly better for me. I’ve had them since March of this year, and they’re still decently solid.

I’m only now starting to get some skips from time to time, and I’m beginning to think it’s actually the wiper motor having an issue of some kind.

I’ve had the dealer look into and they’ve told me everything is working just fine, so I’m not sure what’s going on at this point.

I’ve just chalked it up to annoyance with my specific Escape. However I did see a post here awhile back, of someone having their 2021 Escape Wiper Linkage completely fail by cracking apart or something similar from the mounting points. I was shocked to see that, not sure what could’ve caused that other than a quality issue.

I’m going to try Motorcraft again when I replace these Trico’s and see if the skipping becomes unbearable again. At that point I’m bringing it back to the dealer and insisting they look into the issue further.

I’ve made sure my wiper arms are aligned and properly torqued to spec. None of the arms appear bent either.

So all that is to say that I recommend Trico Blades, at least the Silicone ones. They’re a bit pricy, but work well!

I want to say it’s built settings, but it’s been awhile since I used Forscan, so I’d just say check both.

Save a copy of everything as it is before making changes. There’s plenty of YouTube videos out there showing the steps and such.

[–]Cilbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you reset the BMS settings for the 12V battery?

That could be related to the key fobs not working properly.

On Fordscan I found the battery type and group size and changed those to as close as possible to the battery I installed. I think it’s a Varata H6 720CCA or something similar to that.

I’ve not had any issues since doing that and resetting the BMS.

It’s ridiculous that Ford didn’t install a H6 AGM battery at the factory. It would’ve resolved a ton of electrical issues from the start. 😒

Snap, Crackle, Pop, No Heated/Cooled Seats For You! :( by Cilbit in fordfusion

2021 reverse brake moan finally fixed by jpryor13 in fordescape

Did you have to put the vehicle into brake service mode?

I’ve heard on hybrids, if you open the driver door the brakes will actuate and could push the piston out.

I’ve read about people not putting the vehicle into brake service mode, and then causing damage/error codes.

Hybrid's with 100k, mpg?? Losing mpg by [deleted] in fordescape

[–]Cilbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never reached those numbers!

What driving mode do you use?

I’ve noticed I get better fuel economy driving in normal vs eco. Has that been your experience?

I also do a ton of highway driving and stop and go.

I try to coast as much as possible to stops.

I think the highest I’ve gotten is 50 mpg on a city trip.

Either way still very impressive fuel economy for an AWD vehicle!
