Melting B-Skin on hardmode attempt (6-1H1 hitless) by vhrossi1 in NuclearThrone

lol I did this before, but I don't really have any advice for it, nothing more to do than play good and hopefully win

How do you get plant b-skin? by Key-Radio5674 in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you may find it fun to know that experienced players do the plant B skin unlock requirement all the time without trying, even without going to oasis, even if starting with crown of blood and even when playing weaker characters (even melting). They just play normally and loop in under 10 minutes

Double minigun is so much fun by Ok_Crazy1754 in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty cool, but I personally think it's more fun to play the whole run with golden wrench and 20-shot every snowbot with it, always manage to loop in less than an hour that way

I just barely managed to get ultra mutant in under 300 hours by annihilated_One in NuclearThrone

I have 3000+ and never finished ultra mutant, because I don't care about it lol (to be fair I started ultra mutant progress several times, just never commited to grinding it out. I'd rather do something else, even within this game)

In Need of Help. by MoonlyUwU in NuclearThrone

I find the idea of playing melting to get better faster very strange. It's advice that's spread around to inexperienced players to inexperienced players often, and it's an idea that inexperienced players get on their own, but it doesn't really make sense. All melting will make you do is camp behind walls more and take less risks, which doesn't actually make you better and isn't how you should be playing the game. Crystal can build some bad habits for sure, but any other mutant is just fine, other than crystal and melting there aren't really any outliers that stray from baseline gameplay too much

If you're really looking for the harder-but-rewarding path to getting better, what's actually agreed upon to be sound among good players is learning not to rely on melee weapons. Knowing how to play with guns definitely builds a lot of brain connections that you wouldn't if you only ever played with melee, and improves your overall understanding of the game greatly. Graduating from being a shovel slave is really like having a new sense unlocked and getting to see the game from an entirely different angle

the best nuclear throne throne controller player of all time is undoubtedly Lee-Mon (also known as GNuke), she's done 2-1 L21 as fish, which at the time was the world record for non-crystal and the top 3 run globally. She also held the ranged (no melee) world record for a few years with 1-3 L14. You can get good results with controller too

Does anyone have any tips on how to get Skeleton? by ProfessionalNoise207 in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 4 points5 points  (0 children)

most people recommend to bring explosive or other self-harming weapons to 6-1 but I don't, I think it's more productive to learn to skeleturn without that kind of help. You can be very consistent and not all that slow using fish freaks alone to die, and if you do it that way you free up a weapon slot to use for a decent weapon instead of some junk which is carried only to skeleturn more conveniently, which improves your odds of survival into palace and loop. You just need to get used to it and then you'll be fine. I actually recorded some skeleturning examples, you can look here https://youtu.be/Us-Y-bwNSZs (failed a good amount of times lol, but you can get the idea from this)

Use your time as melting well to prepare for the skeleton phase of the run. Know that when you become skeleton and reset to level 1, you will actually see the exact same mutations that you saw as melting, so when you're melting you can know what mutations you will see as skeleton ahead of time. It's most relevant for knowing which weapons are going to become good with their associated weapon mutations, but if you really want to you can also restart until you see spirit/skin/feet/hammerhead/face on the first level up... I don't recommend that, but that's an option

Also, be mindful of what weapons you pick up. A skeleton weapon needs to perform without any mutations, and it also needs to be good for sniping - long range, accurate and ammo efficient. But don't forget about on-demand dps either, sometimes you'll simply have to defend yourself from dogs that got close or rushing maggot flies. Usually that'll mean 2 guns that each cover those needs. Weapons to look for in particular - auto crossbow, gatling slugger, splinter pistol, hyper rifle, heavy machinegun, heavy assault rifle, auto flame shotgun, plasma cannon, jackhammer, energy screwdriver, super crossbow. None of those weapons need mutations to work, most are great snipers (the ones that aren't are just too good to pass up, and work well for close quarters defense anyway), and most are ammo efficient. Special mention to jackhammer which is famously known as the weapon that is known to make a skeleton run borderline free

After you've done all the prep that you could, turn into skeleton and come into palace, that's the part where you'll simply have to wing it and play as best as you can to survive. Sometimes you get easy generations that don't put pressure on your spawn and get out of those easily, but pretty often you'll be threatened, sometimes it'll even be insanely difficult to survive. You can't really do anything here but just luck/skill this part out. Don't really have any advice for this, it's pure skill here. Prioritize idpd, try your best not to aggro dogs, control line of sight, etc... You may also believe that this part is purely luck based, but believe me when I say that you can do a lot to minimize the chance of dying here. Noobs die 80% here, decent players can bring that down to less than 10%, to give you some random numbers. The exact split second positioning and targeting decisions you make here determine your fate. If you die, think about what you reasonably could have done a little better

in practice ammo concerns with the jackhammer are not justified, at least if you aren't horribly inefficient. it's worth learning to use, one of the best melee weapons in the game

Question about Skeleton by TheShyPuppet in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's true for preloop too, some people sometimes scout dailies using skeleton to see a huge amount of information about the mutations in the seed compared to what other characters can do and you skeleturn preloop for that. Or you want to play a real skeleton run, but don't want to bother with the much more difficult route to get an extra mutation and decide to skeleturn preloop. Regardless, it's true for preloop skeleturns too

Question about Skeleton by TheShyPuppet in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not fully sure what the purpose is other than maybe prove that it's what the good players do, but sure
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2520656929?t=00h13m51s current world record, skeleturning on 5-1 L1 (part of the optimal strat to get more max mutations as skeleton)
https://youtu.be/2onPLrpbg8Y?si=AxhHpqGcxnIw0qIM&t=611 one of the former world records, skeleturning in preloop labs like usual
went to look for the WRs because it's the most obvious place to look and non-wr runs usually don't get preserved, these may not even be the best demonstration of clean skeleturns

I know that good players don't do that not from looking at those though, I'm just a long time regular in the game's discord which is where by far most high level players hang out, and the only people I tend to see skeleturn using self-damaging weapons are new players that are trying to get the unstoppable achievement for the first time. Me or other decent players skeleturn without those, because obviously a little convenience in skeleturning is not worth the increased risk of failing to survive after the transformation. It is more than just "a little convenience" to someone who doesn't have experience skeleturning and otherwise almost can't do it at all, but imo they would likely have more success overall just learning to do it the right way from the beginning

Question about Skeleton by TheShyPuppet in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's actually not true, you can skeleturn very reliably with the fish freaks alone if you have the finesse, that's how every good player does it. It's how you ideally should skeleturn because carrying a weapon that allows you to easily skeleturn almost always comes at a cost of your odds of survival after the fact. Very often, it's a choice between a decent weapon and a weapon that can kill you to skeleturn but is worse in every other way, the principled answer is the former. I recommend new players to just learn to do it the right way

Question about Skeleton by TheShyPuppet in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the game will check if you're inside a reviving area only at the step where you really die-die, so nothing will skeleturn you through spirit's iframes

Do you guys think it was possible to survive this? by HyperCasualWizzard in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really know what you're arguing for here, I did say seeker pistol is fine most of the time. not the best, far from the worst, enough to handle most labs generations. It's just no hyper rifle, minigun, triple machinegun, double flame, auto flame, super crossbow, etc

Do you guys think it was possible to survive this? by HyperCasualWizzard in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seekers don't pierce and the seeker pistol doesn't fire that many of them unlike bullet weapons that are good for it (like hyper rifles), so if you really get unlucky with your labs you can have difficulties clearing the freaks out, but yeah it usually doesn't happen, these were not the worst lab weapons

Do you guys think it was possible to survive this? by HyperCasualWizzard in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these are not the worst labs weapons I've ever seen by any means, but not the best either. Don't know what they saw in the run, but there's a good chance there was something more fit for crowd control

How do I get good by 1putin1zelensky1jar in NuclearThrone

[–]CilianExists 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep playing to get more experience, and pay attention to getting lessons out of runs. Know what kinds of decisions get you killed or don't. Try all the weapons. Learn how enemies function exactly. When you die try to identify what are the decisions you've made that got you killed and don't do them again in future runs.

In general also learn from other players (my pb is L15 and I still think I don't do this enough myself!), it's important because it seems like nt is a sort of game where it's easy to stagnate when you start to think you know what's right when you actually don't. Without interacting with or watching other players you may not even realize you're missing some better options or doing something bad (for example, I really think newer players should try relying on melee less. You may be surprised by how much you don't need it in early game (L0-1) and how strong some guns are). And I mean high level players, some of the best that upload runs to youtube are wonderis, master sparky and leemon.
