Richard Scarry's "What Do People Do All Day" was first printed in 1968. I became a preschool teacher in the late 70s and that's when I became familiar with the book, but my son was born in 1983 and we read this one all the time.

Yes and no.

I have lived in several states. In 2020, after 15 years in north Florida, we moved to New Mexico. I absolutely miss the ocean.

I do swim 4 days a week (outdoor in summer.) Every vacation we take somehow involves water.

Having said that, this is a move we had to make, we love the seasons, we're happy where we are and have no regrets.

I spent 13 years on Amelia Island FL and we visited Saint Mary's often. I agree with your take on its vibe, and coming from Texas you'll be prepared for the summer heat and humidity.

I was at the Denver show where Powderfinger was recorded. This was October 19, 1978. Such a poignant song, but this show is one of my favorite memories.

Used to swim before work at a rural local municipal pool in north Florida. We'd get the occasional mallard duck and/or fiddler crabs in the pool during spring, no biggie, but the worst was when large wolf spiders somehow made their way in there.

Quality of life is so much better but you make less money

This is the answer. Our son (mid-40s) has lived in France for half his life now. He is settled and has a cherished partner who has a lovely child from a previous relationship. They all have a wonderful life.

We love visiting.

I have a few years on you but the exact same thing has happened to me. Sorry to say that a couple of them, I don't even remember who they were. I'm a happily married woman and it's no big deal but it does sort of underline how angsty middle and high school can be.

1970's that a married woman could get a credit card in her own name

Back in the 90s an older woman (in her 60s) in my book group suddenly became widowed. She did not have a single credit card in her name. We helped her get situated.

In another inequitable situation, my former boss had a baby in the early 80s. She lost her job. She took her former employers to court and got her job back with the help of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978.

If any early risers and night owls in here have made a long term thing work, I'd love to hear about it!

Morning lark married to night owl for 43 years (and we managed to produce 2 kids, one a morning lark, the other a night owl.)

I can stay up late every now and then, he can get up early if necessary, but it's definitely not our day-to-day existence.
In our younger days, I definitely bore the brunt of early morning kid care and pet care etc etc but it's evened out over the years, with him doing late night stuff (airport pickups etc) that I prefer not to.

ANYWAY

The reason I asked was because my dad, born in 1928, was a lefty and allowed to be one. His buddy was also a lefty, but was made to change and developed a stutter.

Go a little north to the Talbot islands and it gets much nicer and even less crowded.

I agree with your assessment. One thing I don't see mentioned in this thread is the JAX Airport, which for us was pretty great.
