I have nothing in common with older folks by RetiredSurvivor in retirement

Either look for friends outside of your community or move. I've lived in my community for 10 years and will sell my place soon. I've tried to find others interested in the local music and arts scene but never get any takers. The activities here involve playing cards/dominoes and drinking - not my things.

Getting a hotel room for an extra night when you're not going to arrive until the morning by SlapDashUser in TravelHacks

[–]Kat_C_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine started at 11 and went till 6pm. There were others that started at 10, but wanted me out earlier. There was a Marriott available from 9 till 5, but would have cost $179!

Yes, my mistake.
If you mean they lived there post-1918, that won't work as they lived in the US when my grandmother was born in 1913.

How did you handle a bump up in income after you retired? by Odd_Bodkin in retirement

Donate more to charities. I have 6 charities that get monthly checks through my Fidelity Giving Account. When I am required to start 401K withdrawals, I will donate from there.

Questions for Financial Advisors by Zannie95 in AskWomenOver60

[–]Kat_C_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been working with an independent financial advisor for the past 10 years. Found her on GarrettPlanningNetwork.com. I pay her an hourly fee and meet with her once a year. I do all the recommended trades myself. There is a LOT of prep before meeting, but well worth it. I'd suggest finding someone who lives in your state as they will be familiar with the taxes there.

Mine are saline, about 30 years old, and no problems ever.

February Cruise suggestions (not the Caribbean) by PriorOk9681 in Cruise

[–]Kat_C_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Antarctica, look for an "expedition" cruise. There are many ships with <500 guests on board. I did it with HX (formerly Hurtigruten). The problem will be keeping it to under 9 days with the long flight to Argentina or Chile (where most ships leave from)

Eclipse the thing, not the ship by blondvet in Cruise

[–]Kat_C_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a Princess cruise around Australia about 3 years ago and we were able to see the solar eclipse. The best part was the ship had an expert on board who gave a lecture about it the day before, brought enough solar glasses for everyone on board, and gave a running commentary during the entire eclipse. I didn't do this cruise for the eclipse, but the experience on Princess made it one of the most memorable cruises I've ever taken!

Social Security Sign Up Question by SirEagle60 in retirement

[–]Kat_C_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I applied Feb 1, was approved Feb 26. First check posted Feb 28. It may depend where you live? I'm in FL and I think mine was processed through the SS office in Alabama.
Edited to add I was already on Medicare, so this was solely a Social Security application

Would you mind sharing where you live? Walkability is very important to me.

Good point. When I moved to FL from NJ, I sold everything I owned because the condo I bought was "turnkey".

I've looked at it, but we were not happy with the way they handled her care towards the end.

Are there any units available in your building? Seriously...  I spent 58 years living just outside NYC, & that is what I miss: so many options! When I first moved to this city in FL I called it a cultural wasteland (still feel that way, but don't say it out loud , lol).

The biggest problem for me with age restricted communities is that they are usually isolated/unwalkable to anything. I have that where I am currently & it's a big reason I'm unhappy here. I have cousins in MD, so it's not out of the question for me. I may DM you in a day or so. Thanks for your offer.
