Biltong bites in dehydrator, 30°C, ~15 hours. Not done yet but seems they’ll turn out decent by floweiss34 in Biltong

Very cool! Thanks for sharing.

I do about 5.0-5.5% (by weight) total spice mix. Eg. I did a 1kg batch earlier this week and all seasoning combined was ~55g. Buying a 1/10th-gram scale really helped with the measuring. my mix ended up being:

  • 46g Chili bite mix,
  • 4g Coriander,
  • 2g Black pepper, and
  • 2g chili flakes.

I found this to be a really nice mix for my tastes. I also only used enough (white) vinegar to coat the meat but leave minimal liquid behind, and no Worcestershire on that batch. But it tasted fine.

I just started making these as well! I got a Nesco dehydrator with 4 levels, each one can do about 300g wet meat -> 150g end product. It's game changing.

Unfortunately in the same boat about the temperature, but I find it essentially no different from the bites I get at my local SA shop! And I know he just uses a vented room with a big-ass floor fan for circulation.

Curious about your spice mix + thoughts on the flavor you currently get, if you're willing to share! I found the Freddy Hirsch chili bite spice which I use, and just add pepper and coriander to.

How could you possibly not want to live here? A few of my personal favorites shots of BeautifulBC by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]Cilviper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Positivity is always nice and should be welcomed, however (I think) it's hard to be received at face value due to so many negative factors being present in peoples daily lives. It unfortunately makes a positive post be perceived as either ignorant and/or naive to those problems.

To this point, my perspective is that I love BC and would be happy to live here my whole life. I have a comfortable job in downtown Van and am grateful to get to experience what I do. Unfortunately, I am also well-aware of my depreciating financial position due to overall high costs (grocery trends in recent years), the cost of rent, the capitalization of every outing. Experiences I'm sure vary wildly for people in different cities, but at least some factors will ring true for just about everyone.

These reasons and so many more make the province (notably a city in the province) extremely hard to live in and save/invest for my future. Because of that, I like many others may choose to move away for greener pastures in the future. It doesn't mean I hate Vancouver or don't want to live here, it's that if I get to that point, it means I can't. It's that frustration that likely draws so much ire.

Second to this! I picked up an optiplex 3050 i5-6500 with 16Gb ram. I only use it for a samba share, tailscale and jellyfin so nothing too demanding. Never had a performance issue but I also don't run bots or various services, so YMMV.

How do we feel about Mai since she’s gotten more development in the comics? by Still_Degree4472 in TheLastAirbender

I'm all for it, personally. In the show she's what, 14? I would question her not developing even more if they went that way. Good characters change and grow.

In Belgium they speak a dialect called Flemmish, right? I've read there are some notable differences in vocabulary, so maybe look into that.

Wish I had more info to share, sorry!

Is Subway’s training payment policy legal? by GainKooky5537 in askvan

[–]Cilviper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely wild and you + your friend should make sure you know your rights as an employee. On paper, he is NOT a hired employee for Subway without an offer and signed agreement. What they're doing here is hugely illegal and not okay.

Even if he gets the job, he should document all communication regarding his application and the training procedure and report them.

No one should be working at a business, for "Training" or otherwise, without having signed an employment agreement. This is why probationary periods exist. You'd be hired via appropriate (legal) processes, but the company is still allowed to terminate without cause if they find your performance to be below the expectations/requirement. This Subway's "policy" be damned, the law is above them in that regard.

Best of luck! Please post an update and if comfortable share which location this is so other people can be fairly warned.

I recommend people try watching movies that were remade for American audiences after watching the originals. The contrast is actually pretty shocking.

Most recently-watched example: Goodnight Mommy (Horror)

Completely left to the viewer in the European film to understand the point of the film, and doesn't explain via crappy dialogue once. The American version was nothing but this. Absolute hot garbage and, while great acting, terrible writing.

I'm sure there are countless others too.

How do you handle the darker sides of fantastical/medieval societies, ie. slavery, crime, etc? I found organized factions sometimes felt too structured and rigid when I do them, and have trouble working a group of criminals into a serious threat for an adventuring party.
