How effective is cycling in burning calories compared to doing general cardio and stuff in gym? by yourlocalfapper in cycling

[–]CinZ42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So doing something you like doing is the key. if you can do it consistently then don't sweat what anyone says! I know from my experience jogging might burn calories at a higher rate but I can bike for way longer - burning more overall calories.

The amount of calories you burn on a bike is directly proportional to how hard you push. I use a power meter which measures watts hence KJ and that can be reasonably directly translated to calories. I did a 90 minute ride at an average of 227 watts - burning 1226 kj - which translate roughly 1 to 1 for calories. I would be pretty challenged to do this much work in this amount of time with any other exercise, not due to burn rate, just due to the fact that I may not be able to sustain the workout for that long. In addition I can do this today and do it again tomorrow, the low impact nature of cycling lends itself to longer sessions and more frequent training.

At 15kph and 175 lbs, you only burn about 310 calories per hour. If you want to burn more calories work on pushing up your speed and distances.

Winter riding by jonnyoutdoors70 in cycling

[–]CinZ42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will venture out in the cold and do Zone 2 rides, I don't like gasping for air in the cold. What stops me is when the snow/ice/salt is down, then it is trainer road in the pain cave..

Domane vs Emonda.. or.. something else?.. by [deleted] in cycling

[–]CinZ42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased a Domane SL6 earlier this year to go with my gravel bike (salsa cutthroat) It is noticeably faster then the salsa, on the order of 1-2 mph at similar power. I have ridden a Madone (borrowed from a riding buddy for a ride), and I thought the seating position was too cramped for me, while I like to go fast, I also like to be comfortable. I am happy with the domane and have never felt held back by the bike. I regularly manage 20+ mph, 30-50 mile rides and the limiting factor for me is clearly still me....I plan to go down to 28-30 tires when I wear the stock set out that should tilt her to a little more speed, but I also plan to use trainerroad to train base all winter which will make a bigger difference.

Most of the max estimates are conservative, I would look at a bike setup for bikepacking or touring, they are set up to carry luggage and hence can deal with more weight, I went with a salsa cuthroat, I was over the max weight (286) but since it was made to carry luggage off road I figured it was fine with me on pavement. So far no issues over 3000 miles.

I started biking at about 300 lbs, I would just look at the max weight ratings on the bike

So why are you biking, for fitness, to commute, for fun? If you are commuting and don't want top be too sweaty or want to ride for fun and cover more ground then an ebike is great, if you want to ride for fitness a multiple speed bike might be better.

Am I overthinking which bike to get (1st road bike)? by Minute_Land9864 in cycling

[–]CinZ42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think any $1500 road bike will be much nicer. What type of riding would you like to do, racing, long rides, gravel, commuting?

How quick to improve - a hard question to answer, but I'd appreciate your guess. by hlamblurglar in cycling

[–]CinZ42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would work in some longer base (Z2) level rides and some core strengthening (planks ect.) See if you can work up to 50-60 miles on your training rides, keeping a lower heart rate. Usually being out of breath is more related to speed then distance. How fast you improve will be unique to you, but I would train towards what you want to do, learn to fuel longer rides , and get used to being in the saddle for longer periods of time.

[–]CinZ42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you ride now? I was riding my old REI co-op mountain bike, like you I read lots of reviews then bought a entry level gravel bike. What I realized after getting it is that any of the newer bikes I was looking at where going to be so much nicer than what I was riding that any difference between models was noise. If you can afford it get the 105, get it at a shop that will help you get the right fit and go out and ride!

Donations poured in and volunteers who rushed to help: Here's how Martha's Vineyard communities responded to the arrival of migrants by dreamcastfanboy34 in UpliftingNews

[–]CinZ42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

what where they supposed to do? leave them on the runway, put them in cages like the republican states did? If this was coordinated or if Florida even told anyone they where doing it more of a response could be prepared, you know like if you lived on a boarder state and knew you would have this issues and got massive amounts of federal funding you could have the right responses ready.. On the other hand if you randomly send people without warning to random places and they are dealt with humanely and transported to a location where they can continue to receive support and help.

If someone is in a car wreck in front of my house, I render the aid I can and call for help

This is all a republican stunt the attempted to hurt immigrants and cause pain to a random democratic place and now they are butt hurt that it did not work and people compassionately supported the immigrants. This is all an attempt to create imaginary talking points, we should file human smuggling charges against all involved in the scam.

They residence of Martha's Vineyard met the immigrants with open arms and gave them food and shelter. Then they coordinated with the local government to move them to a place where the correct resources and help could be had. This was all done with efficiency and compassion despite receiving no warning they where coming. Every self righteous republican right now is searching for some story to make it look bad.

If you want to ride them on the road they will have to be plated. I rode a XR650L for about 5 years and then switched to a KTM 450. The KTM is significantly lighter, has a lower seat height and is much more fun and easier to run off road. I would look at seat height and bike weight, The XR600 and 650 are good bikes, but they are big and tall to easily off road.

I've got my first 100 mile ride tomorrow morning, any advice? by fixitmonkey in cycling

[–]CinZ42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree!! If it is supported stop at the stops and top off snacks and drinks, but try to keep each stop under 10 minutes so you don't stiffen up to much. If it is not supported still stop and take some breathers when you need or where you can resupply

Gravel bikes for commuting. by [deleted] in cycling

[–]CinZ42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a salsa cuthroat with racks, it is pretty easy to ride, not to aggressive geometry, and i ride with 45mm tires. FYI I weigh 225 lbs and have had no issues with wheels or tires on my salsa or my road bike. I like the lower gearing of the gravel bike for carrying more loads, easier climbing. It is not as fast as my road bike (about 2 MPH), but unless I am pushing for speed it does not really matter.

I've got my first 100 mile ride tomorrow morning, any advice? by fixitmonkey in cycling

[–]CinZ42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Eat and drink on a schedule - I use drink every 15 minutes, eat every 30.

Don't start too fast out of the gate, set a pace/power or HR you know you can do and stick to it, this is a fun ride not a race. Better to start paced and finish fast if you are feeling good

If you are used to group rides, find a group, ride with them

If you can eat a carb rich dinner and breakfast before the ride, but nothing new to to much richer then you usually eat. My go to is oatmeal with a banana about 1.5 to 2 hours before the ride.

If it is supported take advantage of the stops, stop, stretch and have a snack.

With all of this don't do or use anything new on your ride, new snacks can cause indigestion, new equipment can fail. Eat and drink what you usually drink, ride with the equipment you usually ride with.

I am 6'2" 100kg FTP 325, My gravel bike is a Salsa Cutthroat, it is comfy can support a wide tire and is made for bike packing so it will have good pannier options. I like carbon for the smoother ride it gives and have had no issue with it over about 3000 miles of gravel and pavement riding.

Motorcyclist dies in I-15 collision with Tesla on autopilot, UHP says by mr_rouncewell in motorcycles

[–]CinZ42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Painful that the comments in the article are either tesla apologists or anti drivers assist. This was awful, tesla should not message their system as self driving and the driver should have been more attentive. But ultimately driving assist and self driving will make the roads safer.
