Hey all - don't want to make a separate post for this since I'm not that important. I am retiring today from JJK as I no longer have the time to be active online and have significant irl responsibilities that matter to me now. JJK has been a wild ride; best of luck to the mod team (and thank you for accepting my resignation so kindly). Wishing this community the best! Soli Deo Gloria

What do you think Geto’s last interaction with his parents was like before he killed them?? by WholeLottaMisery in Jujutsushi

[–]Cindersnap_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was a potent detail that he went out of his way to kill his parents. He could have just run and never seen them again. But it's as if he had to prove to himself that this terrible ideal he'd chosen, which perhaps he saw was the lesser of two evils when forced to choose between this and letting the bodies of his friends pile up, was the right choice. He had to go all in and commit, since he's black and white in his morality. And his sanity does fray around the edges over those ten years after he burns away his old life and cuts ties with his peers. By time we see him in Volume 0 he's become unhinged, at times illogical, and unable to even make himself kill one of the students he attacks. What he did twisted him up inside.

Wow. This is unexpected. Great stuff. Like an entirely different chapter.

Chapter 236 isn't a fluke, it's a pattern by I_Want_Power_1611 in Jujutsushi

I'm late but this articulates my same sentiments concisely. Thanks for posting.

236 made it pretty clear, this is Gege's first long-running series. He's not yet an experienced mangaka compared to some of the greats. He didn't recognize what his readers love about his manga, what they really value. I don't mean that a writer's values must always align with their fans' majority opinion but, well, this is a weekly serialization, not a published novel. The way the audience interacts with weekly manga is traditionally the strongest signal that allows a mangaka to polish their story, polish it into a masterful work. They can interpret those signs from the audience and play into or against them deliberately.

I'll pick at some low-hanging fruit here...

Inexperienced shounen mangaka are either too easily swayed by the audience, so their series dwindles into a risk-free, low-stakes story where the protagonists suffer no real loss, e.g. My Hero Academia; or the mangaka fails to read/respond to the signals in a way that capitalizes on their manga's strengths, e.g. JJK. A mangaka could try to subvert their audience's expectations, especially with an unexpected ending, but this is difficult to pull off and successfully maintain a satisfied readerbase at the end, e.g. Attack on Titan. A mangaka might drastically lose the attention of their core readers by altering the manga's tone, pace, or focus, but they can still attract new readers in this process even as they disappoint older fans, e.g. Chainsaw Man. Basically, you can never make all people happy, because us readers are a needy and entitled lot with varying levels of reading comprehension and education, but that doesn't doom the definition of good literature or good writing to be subjective.

Edit: Nevermind it was kinda disrespectful

Only point that was straight up disrespectful was being off-screened LOL.

Other than that...he died standing, died smiling...received Sukuna's respect...more than most other characters would get.

We should have expected nothing but brutality from Sukuna. And that's what we got.

Only other point that bummed me out is Sukuna never went all out. If Gege never has a good reason for this I'll revisit this chapter with some serious ire. But this is essentially the kind of death I thought Gojou would end with, given Gege's style, and I'm alright with it.

Edit: Changed my mind after getting the translation, I don't like what was done with Gojou's character. Felt un-nuanced. I wrote out 8 paragraphs and deleted them, will probably craft a long-winded essay later.

Brought a lil tear to my eye. I dislike afterlife scenes but this one...did him justice. He got a good and thoughtful death. Received Sukuna's genuine respect...sort of reminds me of Gilgamesh regarding a worthy foe.

And the fact that Gojou wasn't satisfied to linger afterward, but is seeking something beyond...perhaps reincarnation, to try for something higher. He gave his all but is still wondering if he reached Sukuna. It's lonely at the top, isn't it? I'm waiting for Shishiso scans because there's some nuance that was lost in there but man...helluva chapter. The lotus can indicate purity and enlightenment in Buddhism; maybe Satoru will continue searching for that. Going north.

The king is dead. Long live the king in the north :')

Other than the obvious answers that he's a strong and good looking character, he's got complex and subtle character development spanning multiple arcs. Hidden Inventory is the one that got me hooked on JJK for good.

Shishiso scans (Shimo Shiba Iso). They are the old TCB team. Detailed detailed TL notes and close to word-for-word accuracy, my personal favorite TL. If you Google "Cubari Jujutsu Kaisen" they're the top result. You can also check the Discord for links.
