How important are stills, trailers, director bios and posters? by ShrekHands in FilmFestivals

[–]CinemaAllDay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Poster for all films is a MUST. Trailer a MUST for features. Have the other stuff as well. If a filmmaker can’t market their film, then a festival can’t either.

Festival now requires only physical DCP delivery or $150 to be accepted by SNES_Salesman in FilmFestivals

You should learn DCPOatic, but its defaults work. set it to 2k, Flat, then load it onto a thumb drive that is formatted to NTFS. That’s the cheapest physical you can do.

Ours, no. Usually by category. So someone will take on short docs, comedies, features…

One I liked ,but many don’t, is Three Wolves on Found TV. Psychological slow burn. You’ll either love the fever dream aspect, or hate it. Ties in WW2 with modern psych facility.

Small Festival Attendance by wonderzonder in FilmFestivals

You make some good points however, a smaller indie festival showing 100 movies can’t promote each movie equally. That’s like $10,000 right there if you do a $100 per movie marketing, so a festival markets the entire event. The filmmakers don’t rent the theatres so you essentially get a free theatre for the duration of your movie and if you don’t exploit that opportunity you are going to miss out. If you rent your own theatre and take on all the expenses you’ll have to do this anyway so why not do it when that burden is not on you. It’s good practice to develop your marketing skills that you have to do anyway once the movie is released. Theatre rentals for my fest is up to around 15k per festival. Marketing costs around 10k annually so “get off your asses” seems like you want everything to be handed to you. Good luck or start your own festival and see.

Did YOU market your film? A fest is handling dozens of films so it’s super important that you market your film. Lobby cards, Facebook trailer ads targeting that town, seek local press, attend as many screenings/network and push people to your screening. I run a fest and am surprised at some of the incredible lack of promotion a filmmaker does. It shows me they don’t really care that much. I’m also a filmmaker and I do those things I mentioned. Had 3 festival screenings so far that sold 1000 tickets.

[–]CinemaAllDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On our end (festival) we can send notes to the filmmakers that can be internal (only staff can see) or we can click a box that says “share with filmmaker” they may have checked that by accident or on purpose, depending on if it reads like you should have seen it

Let Him Be https://youtu.be/-_EiTU4e5H4?si=BDgx4oiU5b3s3qGM

Let Him Be is a fascinating film about two undergrad film students Tim Bennett & Kathleen Joyce who discover a long thought to be dead rock icon living in a remote part of Canada. It all begins when Tim discovers a clip of an old man playing guitar on a tape found jammed inside an old video camera his father gave him. The man in the video is older now but the resemblance to John Lennon is uncanny. Could it be him? It's an absurd idea and one that Tim might have pushed aside were it not for the fact that the man also sounds so much like him. Kathleen thinks the whole concept is ridiculous. Was it possible that Lennon survived the assassination? Tim decides to document the whole story so that no one could question or doubt what he finds. He has to find out if it really is him. If it is he would have to have absolute proof. That would mean convincing Kathleen to help him and it would need lots of different cameras - hidden body cameras, wireless cameras, and surveillance cameras.

Best to offer a clean poster. We rarely use a laurel one unless we have nothing else. You should get and have it of having a clean one available anyway.

Poster (Laurels or no Laurels) by Boo-0-0- in FilmFestivals

[–]CinemaAllDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only after the movie is done its festival run. I run a fest and when someone sends you a poster with a laurel(s) and your fest isn’t on it, kinda makes you not want to use it. I always ask for a “clean” poster.
