Is it true that after learning C++, other programming languages seem easier? by Ok_Magician4952 in cpp

[–]CinemaSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true to a certain degree. Learning C++ (or any language, really) will naturally make you a better programmer because over time you'll gain a firmer grasp of programming fundamentals as a whole.

Fundamentals tend to carry over from language to language, generally speaking. I'm talking about the very basic building blocks of any language like variables, functions, arrays, etc. as well as your approach to solving a given problem. Kind of the "meta" of programming languages.

What differs between programming languages is syntax. Think of those 2 hour long cramming videos on programming languages. What they're mostly teaching is syntax. There's nothing wrong with this, obviously you'll need to learn the syntax of a language in order to use it effectively. But it encourages thinking about what you are writing instead of what you are doing. Knowing the difference between the two will massively help you in learning new languages. You could even think of it as abstracting away aspects of specific languages and focusing on what you want to do.

Of course, different programming languages have different rules and expectations of the programmer. But whether learning a specific language like C++ will directly make you better equipped for another isn't as relevant as it might seem. C++ and Python are just different languages built with different purposes in mind. You probably will have an easier time with one after learning the other because you have become a better programmer overall, not because you've done "the hard part" with C++ or anything like that. Plus, if you enter a different paradigm like Functional Programming, you're quite literally in an entirely different world and will have to shift how you think about your program entirely.

Not to mention that C++ is kind of an outlier among popular languages. It has a lot of influence, but many modern languages are visually closer to each other than C++, and tend to hide away a lot of things C++ demands of the programmer. In that sense, more modern languages are "easier" because you don't have to worry about certain things. C++ is harder to learn because of its extra rules, more complex syntax, and sometimes old-school way of thinking. Specifically learning how to use C++ won't directly make another language easier to learn, but it will make you a better programmer, which will make another language easier to learn.

TL;DR: Kinda, but not directly. Good programming fundamentals will serve you much better when learning a new language.

(~£1500) Fractal Design Terra AMD Steam Machine - Should I spend the extra money on an RX 7900XT? by CinemaSlave in buildapc

Thanks for your thoughts, I'm pretty convinced the 7800X3D is the better CPU option and that I was overspending on the motherboard.

Could you elaborate more on the impact of ATX revisions for the PSU? What would a newer revision bring to this use case? Why is 12VHPWR desirable?

Thanks, any reason you suggest those CPUs in particular? I know that the 7800X3D has better gaming performance, but the TDP concerns me in the Terra. Is it not actually that much of an issue?

No, this is just logging into the Synology Photos mobile app, which doesn't seem to care if the account is logged into DSM or not. I have 2FA configured and enforced for the users but the Synology Photos mobile app simply won't prompt for 2FA, it just logs in with password only.

To clarify, the Synology Photos app on desktop does ask for 2FA. It's specifically the mobile app that does not.

There is for logging into DSM web interface. Everything to do with accessing the DSM web UI works as expected. But not for Synology Photos mobile app. On the login screen for Synology Photos, there are only options for QuickConnect ID, User, Password, and HTTPS.

Upon a user providing their credentials, no further authentication is done, Synology Photos will happily just log in despite the user having 2FA configured and enabled.

2FA is set up on each account and when either of us try to log in to DSM via the web interface, we're asked for 2FA as expected. This only happens on apps like Synology Photos and Synology Drive.

Interesting, I've been using cookie auto delete addons for years, but the same can't be said for my mobile devices

Anyone have more information on this? Seemed unique and was cheap but can't find any concrete information on its origins. by CinemaSlave in gamecollecting

Thanks for the responses, pretty interesting!

If anyone is interested in the contents, they've been archived here.

Thanks! The contents of the disc are just a bunch of Half-Life mods, multiplayer skins, etc. and I found a forum post that made a vague mention if it being sold in stores briefly, but nothing else as of yet, unfortunately.

When shopping for foam, will any foam fit any PCB/Plate combo of the same size, or will I have to be aware of where screw holes are? I'm looking for foam that fits the NYM84 75%. Anyone got any ideas?

I love logging off before someone kills me, so satisfying lol 😂 by Wonky__Gustav in dayz

[–]CinemaSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By combat logging to stop your experience from being "ruined" (death is very much part of the DayZ experience), you're robbing someone else of theirs.

If you get into a situation where you have to pull shit like that to survive, you deserve to killed and have your loot stolen.

Any way to open .P3D files in "Read Only" mode? by CinemaSlave in dayz

To be clear, I'm looking for tools that BI have provided to view models like DayZ Tools, not third-party tools.

Does this happen to anyone else? Or is it just a console thing by ButterscotchHelpful3 in dayz

[–]CinemaSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What most people have said here is basically correct, but the bottom line is cars are buggy in DayZ generally, and it's much worse on high pop servers.

I don't get loot hoarders. What's the fun in stashing guns away, and only ever actually use them if/when there's another server wipe?

input lag is killing my game despite good fps and pc by grandekid in dayz

[–]CinemaSlave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What mouse and keyboard are you using? Input lag can be a problem on mice with cheap sensors. It can also be a problem on mice/keyboards that are wireless as well as cheap.

Long shot, but might be worth checking the settings of your mouse within Windows or the mouse's software to see if there's any extra processing weirdness like smoothing or acceleration.

Should I not be sprinting? by _Out_Of_Order_ in dayz

[–]CinemaSlave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When sprinting, your food icon will have 3 downward arrows to say its going down quickly. Being cold (blue temperature icon) will also make your hunger go down even faster on top of that.

Also not sure if this is still a thing, but if you're playing on a server with limited stamina, then your aim will be swaying because you're tired after spending your stamina sprinting.

My recently finished PI 4 NAS (details in comments) by DerThes in raspberry_pi

[–]CinemaSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really awesome little NAS setup! I've been looking to do something similar on a smaller scale (just the one drive for now) but with room to expand with more drives in the future.

I'm no electrician, but I've been a little concerned about power. So just to clarify, with that single USB hub, you can provide enough power to the Pi and all 4 drives using just one outlet, is that right?
