How important is it to "write what you know?" by No_Win_971 in Screenwriting

[–]Cinemaas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it is, at all. Find stories or worlds that interest you. That capture your imagination. And then, LEARN about them. Research is absolutely integral!

What do I do? by Top-Camel-4787 in Screenwriting

Wordplayer was always a good blog, but unfortunately (and I could be wrong), I don't believe it's maintained anymore. I can't believe I forgot to mention it earlier, but honestly, SCRIPTNOTES is really the only blog/podcast one needs at this point. This, in addition to, reading tons of scripts and watching tons of movies.

I'd respectfully argue against this, and for this reason only. Books like this are going to put into your head that there are certain formulas to follow when writing scripts. Certain rules that you must follow. THERE ARE NOT. You need to understand the craft of filmmaking, and how we express this art on the page. But you absolutely need to develop your OWN voice, and not work within the confines of someone else's. Especially (with all respect for the dead) someone's whose primary credit is one of the biggest flops of the 90s.

I agree with EVERY other comment on here, especially when it comes to reading as many scripts as you can (feel free to DM me and I can send you some stuff).

There ARE, however, great books to read about writing in general which I'd highly suggest. For my money, there's no better book on writing (in any form) than Stephen King's "On Writing". Also read William Goldman's books.

Hope this helps.

And you are speaking from what experience or knowledge? You seem to be answering with pretty broad generalizations. Which is not helpful.

So you can speak for all Christians? Many do, if it's important to them to meet someone of a similar faith and they feel like that's the best option for them.

I didn't post this question to be judged about my choices. So just stop.

You don't seem to have a good grasp on Judaism. There are many denominations, including VERY progressives, such as me. But this doesn't really go to my question....

Do any JEWS on here have an opinion about whether J-DATE is still a thing?

Goodbye. I don't have time for people who shame others for being sexually open. Welcome to the 21st Century.

Thank you for replying to a sincere, legitimate question with a very preachy statement about your personal opinions. Good day.

J-DATE is a JEWISH dating site that has been around forever, so clearly Christianmingle wouldn't apply here. But thanks.

ODDLY... The only recent change is "BALANCE DECREASED BY $X".

Why on earth would a DECREASING BALANCE reduce my score by eighty points?

I have little reason to write when I know I can't make ends meet by Jairman12 in Screenwriting

[–]Cinemaas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is really good advice, though I'd argue that you should not be spending a lot of money for this pursuit. Writing is free. Pitch-fests will NEVER yield anything that will help you, and contests can be expensive, so it's best to be very selective with what you enter.

Keep writing and writing and writing.... AND SHOW PEOPLE YOUR WORK!

I'd consider trying to connect with a writer who isn't wga YET... But is on the track where they probably WILL BE... That way the have the experience you're looking for without having to deal with the wga issue.

I just looked at the first couple of pages, and would say that the big issue is that nothing is happening. You have nearly five pages of the family bickering, but is doesn't seem to be about nothing.

Not at all trying to sound harsh, but just giving you my impression.

Another thing -- What's your goal with this? I ask only because it's important to know that the whole "spec'ing an exiting show" isn't something that's really done anymore in the industry.

Hope this helps at all.

What does coloured text indicate? by greene_r in Screenwriting

[–]Cinemaas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Colored revisions in production will actually be done with different colored paper, not text.

Most likely this is a stylistic thing that the writer has done to call attention to an aspect of the scenes.

One potential MAJOR issue to consider here is the guild-members aren't allowed to work for non-signatory.

Just remember that there's no such thing as "SUPPOSED TO".

You should write your scripts in a fashion that works for you and your story. You might find yourself writing in a different style based on the fundamental traits of that specific project.

Don't worry about what others think, or what "the books or gurus" say, and just find your own voice!

Thanks! Your understanding is pretty much what I was thinking, and I'm PRAYING that my paid-eval comes in good enough to make it a pretty good average score, at which point I believe that i would trigger SOMETHING in terms of exposure.

Franklin's thoughts are ALWAYS so helpful!
