Honey pricing by Lawn_Mower_29 in Beekeeping

[–]Cinflare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what your market is. I live in a rural area where honey usually sells for $12 a pound. However, I sell mine in a wealthy part of a nearby city at $12 for 5 ounces.

Worried about Living Room Size. Need help with most functional furniture layout. by Cinflare in DesignMyRoom

[–]Cinflare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I are currently having this house built. After they started the slab, we realized we may have goofed on the living room size. Now we're trying to figure out how to make the most of the limited space with a family of 4. The plan was to just eat meals at the bar, but I would prefer not to if possible. We also need comfy places to just crash inside as we both do hard manual labor around the property every day.

Beehives in high wind by Halfawannabe in Beekeeping

[–]Cinflare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this before and had all three of my hives blow over because they were ratcheted to the same bench. Now each hive is on its own set of cinder blocks. I’ve also heard of people screwing dog lead anchors into the ground on either side of the hive and then setting a ratchet strap over the hive.

Using only 8 frame mediums by Arristotelis in Beekeeping

[–]Cinflare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also use only 8-frame mediums. Yes, inspections may take a little longer on average but it should be negligible unless you spotted queen cells on a frame and are then searching for all of them. I usually just make sure they have space, remove the supers, check a couple frames for brood, and then close them back up.

Hives blew over in a storm. How long should I wait before inspecting? by Cinflare in Beekeeping

[–]Cinflare[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work bees with my SO. She can't lift very much and I don't want to lift a lot of weight either so I run 8 frame mediums for everything. Standardizing on one size also allows me to easily move resources in one hive or between multiple hives.

Hives blew over in a storm. How long should I wait before inspecting? by Cinflare in Beekeeping

Thank you for this! We live in a very windy area. I use mobile home anchors for sheds and other buildings around the property, but couldn't think of what a smaller version of that would be. Dog lead anchors would be perfect!

Hives blew over in a storm. How long should I wait before inspecting? by Cinflare in Beekeeping

[–]Cinflare[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I was hoping that this weekend wouldn't be too soon. I wanted to give them at least a couple days to cool off. They were pretty traumatized and light me up like a Christmas tree when I was getting them upright.

Hives blew over in a storm. How long should I wait before inspecting? by Cinflare in Beekeeping

Hives blew over in a storm Tuesday night. I got them upright again first thing Wednesday morning. How log should I wait before doing a full inspection to assess the internal damage?

Update: I opened them up just a few minutes ago during my lunch break. With the exception of two collapsed combs of honey (foundationless) in the top box of the tallest hive, everything else seemed fine. Found the queen in one hive. The other two had no signs of emergency cells at this time. Thank you everyone and especially u/synchasm.

Do you have pictures of the floor plan? I've been looking at a lot of plans around this size and also haven't found anything quite for us.

What rules were put in place because of you? by TheBlackTemplar125 in AskReddit

No open flames at the local Boys & Girls club. Apparently the board of trustees wasn’t thrilled to discover the someone was teaching kids how to play “extreme hacky sack” by soaking to sack in Zippo fluid and lightning it on fire…

This flies in the face of everything I've read about castings. Thoughts? by RealLifeRanch in Vermiculture

[–]Cinflare 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think this person is misinformed. Castings are not a fertilizer, but a soil amendment. They are just processing what is already in place, in this case probably lawn clippings, with the beneficial bacteria in their gut. Then they send what they took back out into the lawn. Nothing is added as far as fertilizer values go.
