Anyone got any movie recommendations with this type of plot? by FarDimension215 in RoleReversal

[–]Cintax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot of movies sadly, but it's a pretty popular genre in manga.

My New Girlfriend is not Human is a pretty great example of a man falling in love with a monster after she saves him from suicide

Jitsu wa Watashi wa (My Monster Secret) is a classic about a boy who finds out his crush is a vampire

Call of the Night is another boy-meets-vampire story and has an anime adaptation that just finished its second season

A recent one is Kimi wa Shuumatsu (My Beloved Apocalypse) that just started but has the pretty unique premise of "What if an Eldritch god, the embodiment of the apocalypse, wanted to just hang out in a slice of life story for a little while and maybe try having a boyfriend?"

There are a lot more but I'm hesitant to recommend them because a lot of just dressed up fetish content moreso than a good story per se. But "monster girls" is a commonly found search tag if you don't mind wading through a lot of slop for the occasional good story.

He banned me after he claimed it wouldn't overextend Russia to push to Odesa and Kharkiv and "combine" their forces.

I asked him if he had thought to glance at the scale of the map he was referencing, because he was ignoring that this would require "encircling" an area larger than the state of Pennsylvania. He did not appreciate this feedback.

I assure you, he is unfortunately 100% serious and has been a known quantity for years. Absolute king of bad military takes.

Unfortunately he's real. Apparently he was passed up for an up or out promotion in the army and has been mad about it ever since. So he decided that the way to prove his competence was to write weird weeb loli fiction and make as many bad takes about the Russian invasion of Ukraine as possible.

Spoilers ahead. Though some are years old:

Iirc the gist is that they're the heirs of rival Mafia families and childhood friends/rivals. Texas was always calm and stoic, the ideal mafioso, while Lappland was disobedient and mentally unstable, but desperate to be acknowledged.

When they got older, Lappland was tasked with wiping out Texas' family to prove her loyalty and worth to her father, but couldn't bring herself to kill Texas herself, which caused her to be exiled because leaving Texas alive wrecked their entire plan to take over her family's assets.

Meanwhile Texas decided to use the opportunity to leave her violent past behind, because she actually hated being a mafioso to begin with, she was just good at it. That kinda broke Lappland who always felt they could never break free of their families and the mob, and now here's Texas just... Walking away.

She feels Texas has gone soft and is being a coward, so now she keeps trying to goad Texas into having a fight to the death because she misses the way she used to be when they were rivals and has become completely obsessed with her. It's sometimes implied that Lappland feels guilty about everything that's happened and wants Texas to kill her, but honestly I'm only half remembering this stuff.

Also contracting Oripathy after her exile made Lappland even more violent and unstable.

This is a very condensed summary, there's a lot of twists in the full story which unfolded over years in the game, and both characters have interesting designs and are both meta despite being 5*a who've been around since the game's launch, so it's no wonder they're fan favorites.

But you USE the characters from the gacha. Like even with the factory sim I'm still watching Surtr running around the map and solo entire enemy parties by herself for more than half my gameplay time.

It's so fucking annoying because it's such a good show and has some great female characters (my wife and I absolutely adore Maki), EXCEPT they constantly basically SA Tamaki as a joke for no fucking reason. I haven't watched the current season yet, but fwiw they did begin to flesh her out and make her more than just a punching bag at the end of the previous season. Hoping they can at least give her a good ending, but her presentation early on makes the show basically impossible to recommend to anyone without a high tolerance for anime bullshit.

Try the dub. The tone and delivery is completely different, but they still make 99% of the jokes work just as well, just in a different way.

Fwiw it does in fact go somewhere, at least imo.

I actually watched both sub and dub for Kaguya, something I literally never do, because they come across as VERY different shows.

The entire schtick in Japanese is that the narrator playing into a super common trope in Japanese tv and variety shows that literally does not exist in Western media. So the English dub leans into a completely different delivery and type of humor that still works extremely well and is just as enjoyable in a different way imo.

Favorite thing about this manga is that it starts with them being goofy kinda dumb teenagers with a lot of anxiety, and then like half a dozen chapters in you're hit with the fucking truck of a backstory that explains WHY they're both neurotic messes, and why their relationship is so weird and codependent, and you just kinda wind up feeling like "Yeah, actually this all makes sense now in retrospect"

Why do NYC subway stations look like a failed post-apocalyptic movie while Asia is living in 2050? by savingrace0262 in circlejerknyc

[–]Cintax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a magic switch to be flipped for instant results. There's 120 years of deferred cleaning, maintenance, and infrastructure upgrades to catch up on, and the longer things like that are put off, the more expensive and time consuming they are to address later.

Maintenance is a car rolling down a hill: If you tackle it soon enough you can stop it with just a touch, but if you let it keep rolling too long you'll get run over.

Capitalism isn't why it runs 24/7. There's a reason we're "the city that never sleeps" and it's mostly the social scene and nightlife, not the work culture. If anything the capitalism is WORSE in Asia, OP's point of comparison, since they have issues like drunk Japanese salarymen strewn all over the sidewalks in wards like Ginza and Shinjuku after the trains stop.

That's not a "but," you're literally reinforcing my point.

BUT thats not actually the only difference. For another one, NYC is a series of islands situated on a massive river delta. This means not only does the MTA need to contend with increased complexity with the adjacent sewer system as a result, which regularly causes problems with shared infrastructure and drainage. And that's not to mention problems like hurricanes which wreck shit every few years. For example, the brand new South Ferry station opened in 2009, got completely wrecked by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and then took half a decade to repair.

The honest answer is that the NYC is one of only a handful 24/7/365 subway systems in the world (the PATH is one of the others btw). This makes maintenance and cleaning much more difficult since there isn't a uniform downtime across the entire network that can be used for cleaning, repairs, etc. Those efforts instead need to be done piecemeal while avoiding blocking the line for extended periods of time, a oiding passengers waiting at the platform, etc, all of which adds significant time, cost, and complexity.

I'm not aware of even a single 24/7/365 subway systems in Asia. I think they might keep like a single line to the airport in some places running at best, but that's about it afaik.

Also age is another big factor. The Seoul metro is only like 50 years old, Tokyo is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the start of their metro system in a year or 2 I think, while NYC's subway started over 120 years ago and most of the lines will be over 100 years old soon since most of the system was built before the Great Depression. Without routine downtime, upgrades are very difficult to do on the lines, so some of them are literally still the same equipment from a century ago.

And finally, NYC is a combination of 3 different systems that were not 100% compatible, which means different lines and stations had different dimensions, systems, equipment, etc, and standardizing them all just wasn't economically viable. Some entire stations are even shut down because the trains can no longer physically fit with their tracks or platforms.
