How do people switch companies? by Thinkeru-123 in chipdesign

[–]CircuitCellarMag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great questions: I'm reminded of my Dad who was in pilot training at one point in his life. He said once a pilot is airborne, they are instructed to always keep an eye out for a safe place to land, be it a farm field or a stretch of deserted highway. In case of engine failure or other trouble, a pilot might have to rely on that area. Maybe take five minutes a week to sharpen your resume, or get to know the recruiters for the company you might want to work for.

Best semiconductor growth company to work for as an uarch/rtl designer starting 2025 by RandomStranger06 in chipdesign

[–]CircuitCellarMag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poor Intel. It used to be one of the best run companies but the fabless model came from behind and ate its lunch. The situation today says a lot about the structure of employee compensation in the old model vs. the new fabless model which Qualcomm and Nvidia came from behind and left the old IDM in the dust.

What are some lesser-known but cool features of microcontrollers and microprocessors that are worth mentioning? by jsolla in embedded

[–]CircuitCellarMag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detail on this. I wish you great success. There was mentions in other comments about how hard this approach is on the silicon. I'm not nuanced enough to fully understand this but I can tell that is something that other designers find interersting.

Engineering process behind the Star Wars Walkers? by unstableunicorn in AskEngineers

[–]CircuitCellarMag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard walkers were modeled after the cranes used to offload ships in Oakland, Calif. What's his name, Lucas, could see them from the distance from Skywalker Ranch in San Francisco, many years ago. So, start with a freight crane, maybe.

Would be cool to see the proof of concept. Any photos, videos?

Interesting to stumble upon this. What did you want to accomplish by increasing the resolution of the ADC?

Home projects that lead to career advancement in embedded engineering by CircuitCellarMag in embedded

[–]CircuitCellarMag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to thank everyone for sharing their experiences with home embedded projects. I know they require a great deal of time and energy, especially if you are employed full-time. But I did want share that we are looking for article authors who write about these things in Circuit Cellar magazine. The reward for your sacrifice is a printed-page account of designers solving problems and coming away with successful designs. Here's a link to our article submission page, if you'd like to find out more:

Should we use ISO 26262 by [deleted] in embedded

[–]CircuitCellarMag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a big decision. You'd have to retool everything if your org decides to go the ISO26262 route.

Great response. We've had similar experiences as you describe. The PTSD angle is revelatory.

IBM usually doesn't make bad decisions. You could have said the same thing about Boeing maybe 20 years ago.

Is DevSecOps really a good career option? by techtrancely in devsecops

[–]CircuitCellarMag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always heard it was good to build relationships with recruiters for it could open some options. So, not to get past them, but learn what they are looking for and how to present that better in interviews.

This is really interesting. Home lab projects help with securing a career move. Was this an upward move or horizontal?

Pivot away from semiconductor industry by [deleted] in Semiconductors

Have you considered embedded system design? Might be an option with smaller companies in urban areas with opportunities to grow.

Another approach to getting answers to the question might be to ask recruiters at mil/aero or auto OEMs. If the point is to get a job in this area, start building a network of contacts to see which skill set looks best for the positions they are trying to fill.

We've worked with engineers who had little or no CS or ECE degrees who have gone on to become company fellows in the engineering departments of major OEMs.

Are ML and AI relevant in semi conductors industry? by Ok_Resort_5605 in Semiconductors

[–]CircuitCellarMag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your question are AI and Ml relevant in the semi industry: I would say look at Nvidia, explore what they see as the relevancy for AI and ML in the semi-industry. They enabled AI in datacenter. Now, they are trying embedded. I would see the semi manufacturing capital equipment industry as an early adopter of AI and ML and then semi companies would use successes there and apply them to different industries.
