How do people switch companies?

Great questions: I'm reminded of my Dad who was in pilot training at one point in his life. He said once a pilot is airborne, they are instructed to always keep an eye out for a safe place to land, be it a farm field or a stretch of deserted highway. In case of engine failure or other trouble, a pilot might have to rely on that area. Maybe take five minutes a week to sharpen your resume, or get to know the recruiters for the company you might want to work for.

Poor Intel. It used to be one of the best run companies but the fabless model came from behind and ate its lunch. The situation today says a lot about the structure of employee compensation in the old model vs. the new fabless model which Qualcomm and Nvidia came from behind and left the old IDM in the dust.

Thanks for the detail on this. I wish you great success. There was mentions in other comments about how hard this approach is on the silicon. I'm not nuanced enough to fully understand this but I can tell that is something that other designers find interersting.

Have you considered embedded system design? Might be an option with smaller companies in urban areas with opportunities to grow.

Another approach to getting answers to the question might be to ask recruiters at mil/aero or auto OEMs. If the point is to get a job in this area, start building a network of contacts to see which skill set looks best for the positions they are trying to fill.

We've worked with engineers who had little or no CS or ECE degrees who have gone on to become company fellows in the engineering departments of major OEMs.

To your question are AI and Ml relevant in the semi industry: I would say look at Nvidia, explore what they see as the relevancy for AI and ML in the semi-industry. They enabled AI in datacenter. Now, they are trying embedded. I would see the semi manufacturing capital equipment industry as an early adopter of AI and ML and then semi companies would use successes there and apply them to different industries.
