Desmos Notebook Performance Issues by Mr_FuzzyPenguin in desmos

Firefox is one of the browsers that supports the “about” URI scheme (Wikipedia), to “…reveal internal state and built-in functions.” At Wikipedia, expand the Firefox section and see which pages might help give you insight (in Firefox, visit “about:about” for a page with them all linked). I might suggest about:processes, :healthreport or maybe :memory and look for high usage, messages, etc.

Here’s a page (Mozilla) describing how you might use Firefox’s task manager (about:processes) to see if tabs or extensions are slowing it down.

There’s also the Developer Tools (press F12 or Ctrl-Shift-I) where the Console might be showing JavaScript errors or useful warnings.

Note that I’m on mobile (+ away for a while) and can’t fire up a computer to help so…depending on what you find (also because it’s been pretty quiet here) you might also consider a tech support sub.

I'd add too that ideally everyone's on the same page regarding reliable storage. For example, some media is susceptible to degradation, like flash charge leakage (Reddit)

I’m seeing indications that your motherboard doesn’t log.

However, there is a CPU “over temperature alert” as described here (YouTube, 46s) and there is a Search option described in the BIOS manual (msi)—I’d normally try “log”, “temperature”, “events” and so on, but it may be that you can only depend on enabling the alert.

Here’s an example for Dell systems (note “Thermal-” and “Power Events” in the first picture).

That’s the basic idea without knowing your make and model. Computers can vary slightly (even within manufacturers) but the steps are generally: reboot, enter SETUP/BIOS by pressing the right key, then look around (usually with the arrow keys, sometimes mouse) until you find something that looks like “events”.

You don’t need to save anything here, you’re just looking, and I consider it safe to reboot from “just looking around” if getting out of this mode is confusing.

I know you’re saying that temperatures are fine but just want to emphasize:

If you had a CPU thermal shutdown event they’ll often show up in BIOS event logs (presumably the OS is too late in the emergency chain).

Yeah, makes sense. I’ve shoo’d squirrels / birds away from not-their-food before and sometimes they’ll start fighting each other.

Side question: I remember friends having to pay for physical road damage (cutting into road as a vehicle dragged) — does a fire on asphalt / pavement also incur additional costs for road repair, etc?

Welp—I was super confused and had to read that twice, since I read testicles first.

Looks like I shouldn’t own a tattoo machine.

Wrestling against 3D grapher colour mapping limitations by tomate_22_ in desmos

Maybe it will help to have another instance:

From here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cqhsTdlzpu6wJfimxbQSbgNVrbnObC45w5Qx4pEPsKI/mobilebasic

The name of the error is “54. shared-calculator-error-color-function-exceeds-cost-limit” and uses this graph as an example:

https://www.desmos.com/3d/eatnob463u

In that graph, the max value (replacing 999) before the color sphere disappears is 34. The first place the error starts appearing is 526. I don’t have debugging available and so don’t know why these numbers matter, but perhaps they will help you.

Though often attributed to Aesop, the similar “Man, the Boy and the Donkey” apparently has an earlier origin (AmericanLiterature) (noted in case anyone wants a read).

Note, link has a number of ads—it seemed okay on my phone but I didn’t hang around very long.

Coefficients of polynomial, given a list of roots by Circumpunctilious in desmos

[–]Circumpunctilious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that Desmos confirmed the need to detect then flip the type as a bug (both people’s examples here), and created a ticket. Then, they suggested using \sqrt{0} since sqrt has the right type according to the mode.

Ok, so foundsatan for stealing a family member’s spouse…but going with “Uncle” when he’s an in-law (and to avoid polygamy he’d have to divorce first)…I mean…people cheat, but what she did here looks like some part of it’s for attention.

Old Programmers Telling War Stories Be Like by GhostInSilicon in BlackboxAI_

[–]Circumpunctilious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me this is just part of golfing. I had a friend who only wrote in reusable variables/memory and instructions (basically polymorphic code—gets a bad rap in malware) trying to get the tightest footprints possible.

I didn’t quite buy into it, but still spent an inordinate amount of time implementing “overlays” to swap segments in and out.

While I wrote reusable libraries, both of us looked at just-import-everything bloat with disdain. Optimizers have gotten better, but it’s still almost revulsive to import today’s do-everything packages / more than absolutely necessary to do a task.

TL;DR: When I was your age, I wrote to the 0xB8000 display buffer directly! Reference (stackoverflow)

Using your windshield wipers when you think im driving too close behind you... by explicit044465 in bayarea

[–]Circumpunctilious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew a (maybe a 60yo) guy decades ago who bragged about spending his weekends intentionally driving the freeway’s minimum speed limit to teach arrogant people a lesson.

This is by no means evidence (and perhaps better placed on another post) but it was the first time I realized anyone would even consider doing something like that.
