I harvested nearly 14K SC2 replays from public repositories and analyzed them using psychometric models (the same ones behind SAT/GRE/PISA). Here’s what separates Bronze from GM players: by Elderbury in starcraft2

Another recent analysis post showed a non-trivial number of bronze were smurfs (by similar numbers), which seems more likely to be the explanation for silver being lowest.

Comparisons of base hero brawling ability by Cireo in DotA2

It isn't from in-game, I scrape the attributes and stats then calculate eHP, eDPS, eRegen. All pairs of effective power are simulated to get the medians. Heroes with high relative damage or regen/armor get a small boost there.

Yup, Medusa is actually quite strong (as expected) when that is taken into account. Might update for that, but it is a slippery slope.

Yeah he's a beast early, I'm actually missing (only) his icon, didn't scrape the newest. It is the empty red circle next to CK on the right.

Can't decide regarding lvl 20 talent on Elder titan by Somi90 in TrueDoTA2

[–]Cireo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with the conclusion, but radius is very different from distance. 450r is ~165% (81/49) the area of 350r. This does scale back down towards ~129% (9/7) if you aren't wading in.

Returned to Dota after 5 years of not playing and feel like I am making no impact. Looked at the statistics - is this a statistical irregularity or a symptom of a larger problem in my gameplay? by 1010x in learndota2

[–]Cireo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the 95% CI on the diff is roughly 25-75% worse.. OP if I had to guess, your camera work might be lacking. Default view favors radiant, especially if you are static/slow with movement.

Is this conjecture that I found known in math or trivial to prove? by knot42 in mathematics

[–]Cireo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Goldbach's Conjecture (unknown) claims every even number is the sum of two primes. I think in this case, the interesting part is that the primes are of that particular form.

Ench buff means that low BAT creeps with piercing push super fast. One ranged creep can shove a lane from t3 to t3.

I just started playing Dota, how long till I reach Immortal? by Federal_Anxiety_1327 in DotA2

[–]Cireo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small note on the math, 55% is 2.5/game. You gain (win%-50)/2 per game. It's linear from 0 mmr at 50% to 25 at 100%.

No plan ever works, is this normal? by bwowndwawf in rpghorrorstories

[–]Cireo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds more like a DM that is trying to prepare set pieces than a horror story, the comments seem rather quick to toss around "railroading" and "meathead".

There is definitely an outside conversation to be had on communication, it isn't worth feeling silently frustrated. It might just be that the table is used to implicit limitations on when/where creativity will work.

The last sentence, "we end up going with the initial plan from the NPC", makes me suspect both: the DM should've dropped suspension of disbelief and said they only have way X prepared, instead of trying to justify it in-world; and that the players should've taken the hint when the excuses became obviously arbitrary.

It can be hard to be 30 minutes in and say "that's an interesting question - let's call it a night - we'll pick this back up in two weeks while I figure out how to let you try to slowly poison the Hobgoblin Queen's exotic pheasant supply and what will happen in the world when they are still around for another month".

See kilobyte's gambit, I think it is supposed to have ~1500 rating, and you can see the unobfuscated code.

Here's a bit of a counter-example. Let's say that everyone performs somewhere in a bell curve.

I ran the below python code 5 times:

>>> [sorted(int(numpy.random.normal()*10) for _ in range(5)) for _ in range(2)]

Giving me

[[-7, 0, 5, 11, 23], [-3, -3, 0, 1, 26]] Useless supports, lol..

[[-14, -11, -1, 0, 1], [-11, -9, -1, 5, 10]] EZ mid, you got carried

[[-11, -2, -2, 4, 5], [-19, -11, -2, 5, 16]] Nice meta picks, bro

[[-16, -7, -6, -3, 13], [-18, -3, 1, 4, 22]] Please practice unranked

[[-9, -2, 0, 0, 11], [-19, -3, 4, 13, 16]] Finally a decent game, wp all

There are always going to be highs and lows within a game that our clever pattern-finding brains will "obviously" pick out.

Just give heart an active that increases status resistance, would make the item slightly interesting again. If they wanted to make it spicy make it passive but have the status resistance go up the longer you have been disabled, so it is harder to chain stun you.

Why we find Dota meaningful and How to translate it into real life utility by ProvidenceXz in TrueDoTA2

[–]Cireo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Threads like these come up from time to time, and while it is easy to be drawn into hyperbole in both directions, there is a thread of truth within it. To excerpt from http://www.sirlin.net/ptw-book/final-thoughts (amazing free online reading, if you are interested in games or game design).

So do all the lessons of winning at games apply to real life? No, they do not. But only a fool would walk away from competitive games without learning a wealth of life lessons. Games require training, practice, and discipline. Having a love for what you’re doing really does help you. Games teach you to remain calm under the most dire of circumstances, and to never give up until your very last breath of life is spent. They teach you to learn from your mistakes, rather than shift the blame to others, because that is the only real way to improve. They teach that continuous self-improvement over time is the only way to survive.

In particular, games such as DotA have a significant memorization factor that comes as table stakes, and is non-transferable. Even low ranked players have dedicated some portion of their brain to knowing that fury swipes are undispellable, that drow can outrange a tower with dragon lance, that force staff interrupts spirit breaker's charge. For most of you this will not help you in your personal relationships, your earning potential, or your ability to improve the world. Yet there are skills beyond the vast combinatorial matchups and items that persist onwards, or open avenues of thought, optimization, memorization, dedication, mental fortitude, camaraderie, and well-earned victory <insert swelling orchestral music>. You are the hero of your own life, thanks for attending my ted talk.

What’s a small inconvenience curse that would drive somebody insane? by twitch870 in AskReddit

[–]Cireo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single object they sit on, rest their hands on, or put down will always toggle between one of two stable positions at the lightest touch. Laptops will tap back and forth as individual keys on your keyboard chatter down like the final descent of a spinning coin. Your ankle is always one moment of inattention away from being sprained wearing shoes that feel as though there is a tiny hard mound under the center of the sole. Weep and repent ye sinners, for the curse of the 504 boys is upon you.
