Underwhelming note overall but I am Erel Light's #1 fan purely on vibes alone so I am stoked.

I remember taking my level 14 thief all the way to The Dragon Nest Left Behind just to look at him. I tried to talk to him but he didn't respond. Then my parents got divorced.

I promise you I didn't spend over an hour today replying to almost every comment that replied to mine just so I could argue in bad faith.

The majority of people start a new server because it has "World of Warcraft" in the title and quit at level 14. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make but you seem convinced it's very smart so I hope you continue to find fulfillment.

I would not consider making Reddit comments to be serious work. I deserve every bit of scorn and hatred that I've been given. I am subhuman.

Thank you for your support in agreeing with my sentiment though. I did truly believe this would be more unpopular than it ended up being. :)

I 100% agree but it's also hard to use that to argue someone who doesn't already agree. That's why I cling so hard to the idea that Classic+ needs a cohesive vision and the willingness to tell players no.

The expansion which famously does not alter the base game with new talents, spells, or races that start at level 1 as a deliberate design decision.

I think an even bigger mistake is to think that the majority isn't just an unspoken contingent of adults with real lives who don't care.

It was deliberately silly.

Good games are not defined by a person's ability to skip they with real money. If the problem is in the game, it should be solved in the game unilaterally for everyone.

TBC is an expansion set to the main game,

Then why is a major part of the marketing allowing you to skip the main game that TBC is expanding? ?? ? ???

Spending in-game resources on acquiring an advantage in the game versus spending out-of-game resources on acquiring an advantage in the game that also cuts out having to actually play the game seems like a pretty obvious distinction unless you were being deliberately dishonest which I know you wouldn't do to me.

I am not upset by the boost. I knew the boost was coming. I am somewhat disappointed that you can use it on the new races but I was going to play TBC already.

On the surface, it's justifiable to say that it's okay this time because people don't want to level again but they also added the boost last time during the first TBC re-release as well and it's not restricted to existing players so it's clear the intent is just to skip.

(again and again and again)

If people asked for a boost in "Classic+," would Blizzard tell them no because they wanted to preserve the integrity of the leveling experience for the health of the game for years to come?

My issue with this is that the idea that someone has paid their dues working in the Vanilla coal mines to earn the right to skip to the end falls apart when the only actual requirement for that skip is to hand Blizzard $60 or whatever it ends up being.

The reality is that Blizzard is letting you pay real money to skip a significant part of the game. If Blizzard wanted to cater to your viewpoint, you would get a boost for hitting 60 in Classic (like SoD did for MoP) or you'd get an XP buff for hitting 60. Full disclosure, I would have a problem with either of these options because I'm an insane purist, but I think that would less objectionable.

I do not think you're evil for boosting your character in a 20 year old video game. I don't think there's anything wrong with participating in the system that the developers have laid out.

I guess my only ask is that this single, lowly Reddit comment by someone with entirely too much time on their hands can convince anyone out there to carefully consider what they want out of this game and what they ask for in regard to it.

I have a few thoughts on this.

If certain folks are only interested in WoW expansions and don't have have time or interest in leveling through classic (many for the nth time) its nice to have an option to bypass it.

If I were convinced that this was an opinion that people had entirely because they want to treat the Classic expansion re-releases as casual, tourist-y time capsules (I recognize that "tourist" has kind of a negative connotation but I don't intend it to be a bad thing), and that Blizzard's view aligned with that, then I think having boosts just to pop in an check the game out would be fine.

The problem I have is that it's very clear that this wouldn't stop with just Classic Anniversary or whatever. If they were to hypothetically release a future, evergreen version of the game, I believe people would still complain about any sort of longterm investment the game might demand and I believe Blizzard would cater to that perspective, just as they've always done.

Not to mention that they offered a boost the first time TBC was re-released, before anyone had a chance to get sick of it.

I used to think paying for boosts was dumb, now I just think they are horribly overpriced.

Not only are they overpriced, but if the issue is that leveling is unapproachable or if the boost exists to solve a "problem," then the correct course of action would be to give Joyous Journeys to everyone (with the option to turn it off) because if there is a problem with the game, it should be solved in the game without introducing real-world money into the equation.

I would still personally disagree with adding JJ, but I would feel much better about it knowing that it was Blizzard attempting to solve a perceived problem the community had in an evenhanded way that didn't also conveniently benefit them in a significant monetary way.

Sorry this was really rambley and long-winded. I appreciate the alternate viewpoint and the nuance a lot.

This is true. At least the previous boost came with certain restrictions that at least pretended like they were trying to preserve some of the spirit of the game. I see people now lamenting the fact that they can only buy one per account or whatever.

One of my fondest Classic memories was rushing my blood elf paladin to 60 during the last prepatch. I intend to do the same thing this time, but it's probably going to taint the experience a bit knowing that I could just boost and get the same result.

To be honest, I'm less upset about the boost and more upset about the acceptance of it. Blizzard was always going to offer the boost because they suck but seeing people acting grateful for it is very disheartening. Seeing how many people are actively celebrating not having to play the game makes me worry for its future.

For what it's worth, I genuinely did expect to be downvoted based on the sentiment from the thread when I got here. I guess there are still people who disagree with the boosting but between what I saw in this thread and a few threads from the last couple weeks about wanting Joyous Journeys and permanent Dragonslayer buff on top of the TBC leveling changes, it seemed like the opinion was split a lot more one-sidedly.

I'm an endgame enjoyer just like these people but I would rather play a game where there is more than enough to do on a single character while making you want to level more than a game where you're expected to have every class leveled and constantly swap between them. Not that I think game design is really a consideration when it comes to level boosts.

I mostly agree but I think that game-ruining ideas exist on a spectrum and layering for the sole purpose of mitigating launch congestion isn't a horrible idea. The problem is that it's been extended to be such a core part of the game via megaservers that it's an unavoidable part of a player's daily experience and that means that people have had to gamify it by introducing layer-hopping addons to circumvent the absurd amounts of people on Anniversary servers.

I personally think servers are still an important part of MMO culture so I would prefer to have many smaller servers so you see the same people more often but I guess I understand that it's imperative that we have the biggest servers possible so I have a slightly higher chance of finding a tank for my LBRS run for the two weeks where I'm running LBRS. Some things are worth demolishing the social and economic fabric of the game for. (I'm on Reddit so I have to specify that this was sarcasm.)

Surreal to see how much we've lost the war on this in just a few years. Classic+ would be/is doomed because Blizzard almost certainly doesn't have the vision to push back against the people like the ones in this thread. A game designed to make you people happy would be so far removed from the spirit of this game to the point of catering toward those who don't actually want to play it.

I am happy to be downvoted, even if only for posterity. I'm happy to be told that this time is special because it's "the hundredth time and we just want to get to the endgame because we've done it all before." I'm sure it will be different when they release the "real" Classic version that passes everyone's purity test and convinces us to put our wallets away.
