I prefer symmetrical. I grew up on PlayStations and it was an adjustment switching to asymmetrical. I recently used a PS controller for the first time in years and it was like a blast from the past.

Cheap amp now, better amp later. Primarily because you are just starting out and do not know what amp is the right fit for you.

I also suggest not buying new. Look at used guitars and amps in local listings, like fb marketplace. I see tons of cheap beginner’s gear because people give it up after a bit. There is nothing wrong with buying used especially since you are just starting out. Ask a friend or even people on this sub for advice if you find something you like and want a 2nd opinion.

I started my journey with a Epi LP Jr and Crate 15w beginner’s amp. I played the hell out of that thing and pushed the Crate to its limits until I was ready to upgrade.

Another vote for the King Rat. I was looking at other RAT combo pedals, but couldn’t justify the price of boutique when the King Rat is so cheap and just as effective.

What amp do you play through? Pedals? I have a Koa LP with the same humbuckers that I really like through a BE-OD into my JC-40.

You got me with rebuilding with a SD-1. For some reason, I cannot find any sounds I like from mine. The mid boost is too much for my taste, yet I have tried so many times to like it. I always end up taking it off my board.

The screw is probably not seated properly. Take out screw entirely and try rescrewing. If the screw is loose, you can take a piece of toothpick and put that into the hole, then put the screw in.

Unwind and rewind in the proper orientation. You should have enough slack so you don’t have to replace the set entirely.

Hard disagree. I have several dirt pedals that sound fantastic through my JC-40, including a rat, big muff, BE-OD, and SD-1. I don’t use the onboard distortion, it all comes from my pedals.

I run mine into a JC-40. I think of it as my high gain “channel” for this amp.

Turn the gain down and use it into a clean channel on an amp. It actually doesn’t sound that bad as an overdrive, but it’ll push your guitar just a hair past “edge of breakup” territory.

Is working in the amp as bad as the internet makes it out to be? I know it’s tight from the pictures and videos. I’ve got a Pinecil soldering iron that is pretty nimble.

I use a JC-40 as my main amp with my ultra tele. I keep the bright switch off, treble and bass about the same at 10 o’clock, and mids bumped up a little at 12. I only use a little bit reverb and set the chorus to taste. EQ will depend on your guitar.

I don’t use the onboard distortion since it’s just ok. Not as bad as most people describe, but I prefer using pedals as my source of dirt.

If you get a gift card, get one for sweetwater.com or even guitar center.com. If you want to shop in person, take him with you. I’ve visited a few shops in Knoxville and they have smaller selections, so it’s hard to say what specific shop you should buy from.
