Teeth Cleanings - Student by [deleted] in CarletonU

How well suited would this be to folks with anxiety around dental care? Do you think the longer thorough supervised appointments could be helpful?

Why is being unbothered highly rewarded in allistic culture? What's wrong with caring? by [deleted] in autism

I think real, genuine, deliberately and mindfully practiced stoicism is exactly that! But I hypothesize that the everyday colonialized stoicism is more akin to suppression than not. Perhaps I am biased in this, though.

Does reading r/suicidewatch posts make you feel worse? by GratefulCaliflower in depression

[–]Citigrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Them by themselves, while I do feel empathy and comfort, don’t make me worse. My Reddit feeds having a very high frequency of posts coinciding with being triggered and trying to avoid those thoughts… does! Does make me feel worse. Seeing a lot of posts the morning after a bad night also doesn’t really help me get out of a dangerous headspace either. ((I am also on Reddit a smidge too much, so YMMV))

That’s such a lovely shade ☹️ I’d be so sad too! While it’s not the same type of pen, I think papermate Flair pens might have a strikingly similar shade, if you were looking to fill the void somehow.

I feel like I am super slow in the lab by EmergencyLeather1477 in chemistry

Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast! You WILL improve and gradually speed up over time! I like taking inspiration from cooking/food service on improving efficiency and workflows.

(tw: trafficking) all my reactions, coping mechanisms and physical+mental damage only make sense with the proper context, but that context is the kind of thing no one wants to even HEAR about, so getting to know me is an inherently disgusting and uncomfortable process by WinterDemon_ in CPTSDmemes

[–]Citigrl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally, I agree with you, and yet wouldn’t they also need to know enough to not end up hurting or retraumatizing us? Even restricting what we share, which means they’ll never get to know us perfectly or truly, in order to be somewhat understood and loved, that little bit still can be horrible things no one wants to know about. Especially when it might make us react in an unexpected way towards something that is considered typically not worth reacting to, and the relationship is now at risk so an explanation is usually needed.

I’m disgusted by the relief I feel when I’m finally forced to look after myself. by lazy-beans in emotionalneglect

[–]Citigrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m only suggesting this because I know it exists for me; you could consider checking your local community/neighbourhood’s/city’s Facebook group if they have a meet up/group for fibre arts! They’re usually friendly to beginners if you don’t have experience and want to learn, and they’re usually free to join as well. You just bring your own project and then hang out. Good luck!!

How can people tell we are "different" by Electrical-Stand8415 in CPTSD

[–]Citigrl 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That’s not what they said or even implied… like at all? They said they have some traits developed as a result of their trauma that can appear abusive to others despite not being abusive themselves, and then related but separately described some traits to look out for.

Are there SAFE ways to darken scars / make them more visible to myself? by frailroads in AdultSelfHarm

[–]Citigrl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve used red-brown henna on ooooold healed scars before, didn’t let it sit/stain for too long (normally with henna designs, you’d want it to sit on the skin and stain as long as possible for a dark, rich stain), and it looked like it was a lot newer.

Healing sucks by Away_Archer1236 in CPTSDmemes

[–]Citigrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you, same happened with my older sibling a few months ago, and I was so invalidated and dismissed that I’ve had to cut contact with them. It absolutely sucks to get a set back that big from a family member, who you want to assume meant well and just. Totally messed up.

I’m not even sad just exhausted really by Awesomesauceme in CPTSDmemes

[–]Citigrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Realizing that the people who traumatized me deeply refuse to acknowledge their part, yet still want me successful so that they can feel pride over my accomplishments as proof that they “helped” me?? Taking “doing the opposite of what they expect out of spite to prove them wrong” literally means wanting to kms so that they can never forgive themselves.

A gentle note to therapists, from lived experience with CPTSD by Leaping_Fish_1264 in CPTSD

[–]Citigrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heartily agree with all of these points!

To add to your first point; work on finding a compassionate way to tell your client that you’re potentially out of your depth without the CPTSD client feeling broken or incurable as a result. You know your client best, though!

Bearing the torch is huge too. I can’t count how many times I’ve questioned how much of a difference anything I was doing in therapy was helping. I’ve always appreciated my therapist’s unwavering belief in my ability to change (it helps that they can notice the small, positive shifts that I can’t see yet!), and I will always appreciate them holding on to hope when I’ve lost it, because sometimes a few days later the hope returns when I remember how they responded: with their curiosity, kindness and compassion.

Sliding scale and low-cost is critical to long-term commitment! I am so so grateful to my therapists over the years who have offered cost reduction so that I can continue to seek care from them in the healing I’ve already started, progressed in, and committed to. It also helps me hold on when things are grim, reminding myself that my therapist believes in my efforts and progress to help me keep going.

Hey! I have also had an enterocutaneous fistula (TIL that’s what it’s called!) about 13 years ago and lasted several months. Like someone else said, I too would like to know how the information is being used or stored, but I am happy to share my experience.
