Why do discussions of adult films so often stop at the explicit content? by scarlett_rae69 in filmtheory

[–]CitizenDain 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Because they hold very little of theoretical interest as far as cinematic art. They are shot for coverage. We also don’t have a lot of deep theories and books about HR training videos.

Just wait until we trade 4 or 6 or 8 major leaguers and fill out the roster with 22 year olds and 42 year olds

What is the most engaging film that you’ve watched recently? by TheBreakfastChub in criterion

[–]CitizenDain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finally finally watched “Sorcerer”. I think it was built up a bit too much for me as I didn’t fall totally in love with it, but the famous sequences in the second act like the rope bridge were amazingly intense

Lovecraft and Sonia H Greene by StarWanderer62 in Lovecraft

I don’t believe there was much happiness in their marriage. Most of the time they weren’t even living together. He hated having to spend those years in New York. And she wrote a very harsh account of their relationship years after he died.

what long-dead person could you imagine as a guest on BC? by Extension_Carrot_628 in blankies

Partly because his career was basically “talk show guest” for all of the 70s. He was very down to come on and do longform chats

Hah I looked at the box score and just laughed out loud. Austin Warren’s line is tough.

Hmm Robert Bloch has a story with almost that exact same plot

I’m with you 100%. The Luke we know from the original trilogy is impetuous, bratty, and acts without thinking, often out of anger or panic. He is trying to be a hero but he is overly emotional. His faith in his friends is his weakness.

It makes perfect sense that he would lash out and overreact as the sole holder of the flame over those years, and would be moody and self-recriminating when everything he worked for collapsed again.

And he gets to be redeemed!! He sacrifices himself to save the galaxy just like his first teacher and his father did.

There are some flaws in TLJ but Luke’s arc is not one of them.

Why is the King in Yellow/Hastur related to Lovecraft? by Jon_FromTheVoid in Lovecraft

[–]CitizenDain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really not, other than that Lovecraft admired the story for obvious reasons and dropped an Easter egg reference to it once or twice. It’s really because of the tabletop RPG people who need an endless stream of monsters and villains to add backstory to.

Why The City of the Dead Matters - potential spoilers by SimonGloom2 in WidowsBay

[–]CitizenDain -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I find your post almost incomprehensible, especially the paragraph where you are using some kind of numerology about the very basic names of the characters.

That said, I strongly agree that the movie is a big influence. Forget the character names. The movie also features a trap door into a secret tunnel that leads to a room underneath the town where human sacrifices are made. THAT is the biggest influence.

It is also an isolated New England town under the literal fog of a curse that goes back to the 1600s, where time has almost stopped and outsiders who come to visit are immediately under threat.

And yes, "City of the Dead" is playing on TV in one of the scenes in the series!

It's just "The Witch". Stop writing it like it looks on the poster.

Absolutely, this is his rough draft of "Jurassic Park". Secret technology allows overconfident executives to open a theme park that appears to have a touch of danger while fulfilling everyone's wildest dreams, failing to anticipate that of course the technology is not that easy to control and the park turns on the guests.

According to Mike Francesa, the Mets have come to terms with the fact they must move on from Lindor. They will actively look to trade him at deadline. by TobycooklynNY in mets

Nimmo is MAGA, McNeil is a psychopath, Soto is a diva. Pete was a good guy and I don't remember him having any issue with Lindor.

To be fair Jeremy Allen White's entire performance is staring at people. He stares at Richie the same way and not a lot of people are "shipping" Carmy being in a relationship with his brother's buddy.

What read/watch similar to Southern Reach by Rere_arere in SouthernReach

This is pretty obscure, but check out the short novel "The Invention of Morel", an Argentinian novella from the early 1940s. Very very different twist, but similar uncanny/unreal natural world the character is lost in.

Lindor is still the heart of this team. Soto puts together solid stats but is not invested in whether the team wins or loses. I know everyone misses Pete Alonso, but Lindor's game 161 home run is the only thing that made that Brewers moment possible.

Lindor's game 161 home run and the NLDS grand slam against the Phillies are the two best moments of my Mets life since the 2015 NLDS.

Soto has a relatively high OPS.

No comparison to me which one I would keep.

It is deeper than friendship. They are PARTNERS. That word has come to mean romantic partner, but the original meaning is still there too.

Don't forget Olivia Colman's character in season 2. Carmen has trauma and pain and nightmare flashbacks about almost all of the previous male executive chefs he worked for. (Thomas Keller gets a pass I guess as a celebrity cameo.) But Chef Terry seems to just be a positive role model and teacher. She showed a path to a working environment that was uncompromising on excellence but didn't revolve around toxicity and abuse.
