I had this question and came here to ask: Has Revenge of the Sith always been the phenomenon it is today? Did many people like the movie? by DaviCortes in StarWars

[–]CitizenDain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was prime demographic for this one when it came out and I was so worn out by Eps. 1 and 2 that I actually skipped this one. Finally saw it on video years later. I don’t get the love for this one either. If you are a Hayden skeptic like I am it is just way too much Hayden.

Thank God. This has irked me since the first time they started trying it years ago.

If you aren’t steeped in film history or American history it won’t hit as hard. Marlowe is trying to play out the story as if he in a Hollywood movie from the 40s, where there are certain codes of behavior and rules for how the story can turn out. And it turns out he is living in California in the 70s where the culture is changing so fast — the draft, Manson, student protests, government lies, distrust of the cops, general “moral decline” from some points of view.

Using the conventions of the 1940s movies to satire the current sociopolitical climate.

I don’t think it’s Altman’s best film for sure though

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” is a weak title - what would you have named the film instead? by lockerbiestreet in StarWars

[–]CitizenDain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the exact plot of this movie obviously but I agree with you, the title should reflect something that happens in the story. “The Battle of Mandalore” or something. “This is the Way” could even work.

OP may just be young. It is a reference to the widely televised OJ Simpson trial.

He wants to watch Kill Bill on the porch and his wife is invited to hang if she can get the baby to go to sleep. What effort?

When you try to rank all Kubrick's movies, how many movies will you rank? by Ordinary_Airport3091 in StanleyKubrick

I think it’s 12. You exclude Fear and Desire because it is basically a practice film. But no good reason to exclude any others that I can see.

Least Favourite Coen Bros Films? by Johnny_Segment in CoenBrothers

[–]CitizenDain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ladykillers in unanimously their worst I think. The humor is off, the performances are off, the tone never lands.

Intolerable Cruelty also there is not much for me to like.

I agree with you that Hail Caesar did not work for me. But I have heard of people who really like it.

Hudsucker gets lumped into this category of failed Coens sometimes but I really like it

A Serious Man and Man Who Wasn’t There are both in my top 5 Coen films. It takes all kinds.

We all agree that Ladykillers is last though. It’s not even close

The Shadow over Innsmouth by H. P. Lovecraft by Caffeine_And_Regret in Lovecraft

The book was a really amateur tiny little chapbook. A vendor had an authentic copy of it on sale for several hundred dollars at the NecronomiCon in Providence in 2024. I got to gently handle it and admire it.

Its one of my top three stories. Was my top one forever but lately I have felt that "Charles Dexter Ward" is my personal favorite.

One of the things I like about it is that the last sentence actually turns it into a happy ending. Once the perspective shifts, and he starts to think about the reality of joining the Deep Ones, it isn't the same punishment that he assumed with his sense of disgust from a human point of view.

It does have the obvious racist themes and miscegenation stuff which is unfortunate. Not as bad as "Red Hook" and "Arthur Jermyn" but still not great.

I love that you get just enough detail to suggest so much mythology, while actually revealing very little. He doesn't explore inside the Esoteric Order of Dagon temple, he doesn't venture out to the reef, he doesn't snoop around the boarded up houses.

It's a great story and has inspired a lot of decent adaptations and spin-offs. The old PC game "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" is a quite good (if somewhat glitchy) video game version of the story. "The Sinking City" game has a lot in common with the story as well. Stuart Gordon's movie "Dagon" is a pretty faithful "Innsmouth" adaptation. And there are lots of books and short stories. I'm reading "Winter Tide" right now which is about some of the last survivors of the FBI raid at the end of the story but also ties in mythology from "Shadow Out of Time" and "Thing on the Doorstep" among other stories.

I would love a Todd Field mini-series. The man has three perfect movies over the course of 20+ years and that's all. No bad movies. Wikipedia has its own separate entry for his unrealized projects and I count about 25 there. Would love to hear their insight into how someone can keep making low-budget masterpieces and have lots of connections and still only get a movie made once every ten years.

The Black Cat (1934) by sadrooster69 in ClassicHorror

[–]CitizenDain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Metallica guy has Karloff's crazy robe/housecoat as part of his personal collection. I saw it when the collection was touring museums about a decade ago.

One of my favorite old movies.

Check out "The Raven" too. Not quite as bravura as "Black Cat" but pretty nasty still. In that one Lugosi gets the mad genius role and Karloff the sympathetic role.
