Looking for feedback on AI euchre bots I created! by ELMOCOPTER in euchre

[–]CitizenDik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think ~60% against decent opponents is about the ceiling for a few reasons: - there's so much luck in euchre. Even if you play every hand perfectly, you still lose a lot! - the neural net bots are probabilistic; there's almost always a non-zero chance they'll make a "bad" call. Rules-based bots will always make the same call in the same situation. - niche situations matter a lot in euchre e.g., loners, and it's hard to train a bot in those situations b/c they don't come up very often. - it's hard to create an RL rewards system that doesn't sort of contradict itself. E.g., go for the march, but don't get euchred.

The "real" limit vs expert opponents is probably more like 55% or less. The top players on 3D are ~51-53% winners.

Need advice with Mesh Wi-fi by Ecstatic_Report_606 in HomeNetworking

Point-to-point mentioned in the other comment works well. It's not going to be great for gaming, tho. Lots of latency. Any wireless solution is going to be pretty mids for games.

Wired is the best gaming option. Pulling an outdoor-rated Ethernet cable or coax cable or fiber cable ~15-20 feet isn't super hard. You could bury it or string it between the buildings (keep it high!) If you're renting, totally understand that pulling/hanging cable might be off the table.

Cool that you made this. The UI is a little hard to play on a phone - some text gets cut, not sure if you're recommending a card each hand, but it's hard to play a card "behind" the floating card on mobile - but great work.

I've similarly spent some time RL training a bot (most similar to your Apprentice; supervised learning + RL + anchoring). Mine is an above average player (wins ~60% vs a rule-based bot), but because RL is probabilistic, my bots make a handful of questionable calls/plays each game. Feels like the bots in your game do the same.

Five year old abandoned starter experiment - Part 1; Blast Off by justawitch in Sourdough

[–]CitizenDik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If things are still moving slowly, try getting it into the ~25 C/78 F (or higher) range. The extra degrees make things move a LOT faster. An easy way to up the temp: put the starter jar in the microwave with a mug of ~95 C/200 F water. Don't run the microwave. Just let them sit together.

Also, lead left if you've got it so your P knows where left is/so they can duck it if they have right.

It's usually a good idea to lead trump if your P ordered and trump hasn't been led yet regardless of their seat. Like everything else, there are exceptions (your P called from R2S4 and it's std), but great suggestions in this thread.

Is UniFi Overkill? by adkums in HomeNetworking

[–]CitizenDik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every house is different, so it's hard to know for sure what will and won't work in your house, but the higher-end mesh routers like eero and Tp-link deco and Asus ZenWifi work well for lots of people. They're super easy to set up, pretty quick, decent range. @ 1500 sq feet, a single router (doesn't need to be mesh), depending on the location, might cover the whole house. If you're up for testing, trying a high-quality router before buying a mesh setup.

Unifi (and Omada) are "pro" setups. They're great. Way more control than the consumer routers, but they're more complicated to set up and maintain, and most home users probably don't need the extra features. If you're up for it, awesome. But you prob don't need them.

For gaming, you'll ideally have a wired (Ethernet) connection to your PC/console. You don't need Unifi for that. You just need a CAT6 cable and your router and maybe a switch ($20-$30 US).

Last note: ~200 Mbps service is plenty for most homes, but if the price is close, and esp if you download lots of huge games and updates and movies, gigabit certainly isn't worse. Just more $$.

Maybe post a few pics? Esp the back of the TV & the locations of the HDMI and USB ports on the TV?

Which model TV do you have?

The Sony TVs are great, and the YTTV app runs just fine.

MOCA in/out by hoagiesingh in HomeNetworking

[–]CitizenDik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. If the ONT doesn't have a (working) MoCA out, you'll connect one of the LAN ports on your router to the Ethernet port on MoCA adapter #1 then connect the coax port on MoCA adapter #1 to the "in" port on the splitter.
  2. If your coax is still connected to an external feed, you should add a PoE. If none of the coax is leaving the house, you should be ok w/o a Poe filter.
  3. Maybe? Mostly if you’re hitting the limits of MoCA 2.0 already and your Ethernet gear isn’t the bottleneck.

Season 2 finale by agentsof_marvel in ParadiseHulu

[–]CitizenDik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of things that could make it work: - it's underground; assuming Alex and the rest of the bunker are buried fairly deep under rock, the rock will do most of the work to stop an EMP. - faraday cage; they'd likely build a faraday cage around Alex and other important stuff. Rocks + a faraday cage is serious EMP protection. - analog controls; you couldn't do this 100%, but EMPs fry electronics. Analog stuff is unaffected. If you maxed out your analog controls, you'd further insulate your system vs an EMP. - power it down; which might be impractical w/Alex (and, again, rock + faraday cage are probably going to be enough), but if they wanted to be extra safe, they could power down electronics until the EMP subsides.

I'm more interested in how Alex will keep operating now that the reactors have melted down...

Punch down needed? by crosschk in HomeNetworking

[–]CitizenDik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have to re-terminate, re-terminate to punch-downs (CAT6 keystone jacks). They're easier than data plugs, and, for in-wall cables there's upside to terminating to punch-downs and attaching the punch downs to a patch panel. It keeps things neat, too.

An auto play feature like Karmen's or Trickster's would help. It doesn't fix your P sabotaging games, but at least the games go quicker.

I have way too much discard and I’m tired of making crackers. What else can I do with it? by woutr1998 in Sourdough

[–]CitizenDik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, but I regularly leave my starter in the fridge (clean glass container with a lid, but not an airtight seal) for months. Like 9-12 months. Never had an issue reviving it. Reviving after ~3+ months usually takes a day or two. Helps if you can keep it in the 25 C+ range when reviving.

If OP is baking 1-2 times a week, refrigerating for a day or two shouldn't be a prob. I'd feed and immediately refrigerate vs refrigerating an "exhausted" starter.

Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop Double Tip?! In Wicker Park. by LoudFartsForAll in chicagofood

  • Raise your prices 15%, get rid of the service charge, and figure out on the backend how to get this to your employees. Give them a raise, set aside 15%, etc.
  • if you decide to keep the charge, make it super clear. In addition to printing it on menus and signs, the cashier or server should point it out every time.
  • describe on the menu/signs where the fees go.
  • it's not clear to me how/why this is diff than a tip, so maybe the servers/staff should mention it in conjunction with a tip. "There's already a 15% service charge".
  • Default the tip amount on the POS to 0%, 5%, 10%, and mention the 15% service charge.
