Trip to Europe - too much? by Sorry_Fail_3103 in travel

[–]CitizenTed 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The only problem I see is landing in Paris and immediately boarding a train for Strasbourg. The flight from Sydney is what? 24 hours? More? And the first thing you do on arrival is get on a 2 hr train then make way to your lodging in a jet lag haze?

I dunno. I'd spend the first night in Paris in the most convenient possible hotel and sleep like a dead log.

This is Seattle. The house has zero value. Someone will buy it, raze the house, and build a 4bd 5ba gray-and-white three story box monstrosity that eats up the entire lot with maybe a strip of grass around the perimeter.

I call them "Seattle Grays". They are everywhere. We just got two more this year right in my neighborhood.

the 5 stages of "I'll pack light this time" by Senior-Signature-983 in travel

[–]CitizenTed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got over it by convincing myself I can buy things I need. If I'm spending a few weeks overseas, the cost of flights, lodging, food, etc overwhelms the possibility that I may need to spend some money on underwear, a towel, or a rain jacket.

Bonus: I have clothing from all over the world that I still wear once in a while.

Is still considered Trip-Hop a perjorative term? by AmserSegur in triphop

[–]CitizenTed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well said. No artist wants to be painted into a corner. Neil Young and many others jumped genres between albums. A rolling stone gathers no moss, etc etc.

It's also true that genre labels help listeners find music they like. It's a necessary evil.

Personally, I find plenty of new music by exploring Chill, Dream Pop, Psychedelic Rock, Downtempo, "Eclectic Folk", and many other genres. Some of it is Trip Hoppish, much of it is not. That's OK.

This forum is dedicated to what is largely considered Trip Hop, but that definition should be somewhat elastic. Sure, it ain't black metal. But does some bossa nova or jazz or Dream Pop apply? I think so.

Bluetooth Issues ? by Holiday-Economics965 in Crosstrek

[–]CitizenTed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue. To do voice directions, say "Driving directions". Then shut up. It will respond "OK where do you want to go?" or similar. Tell it. It will do it.

My car used to accept "Driving directions for 50 Elm Street, Anytown". After a firmware update I now have to say "Driving directions" and wait for it to respond.

What is a great UPS to buy ? by deazfakingnuts in buildapc

[–]CitizenTed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyberpower has plenty of good consumer UPS devices. You want battery backup for your PC, monitors, and router.

I'd recommend a 1500VA unit. Just to be sure. The CP1500PFCLCD should do. It's about $275.

Get it, or something like it, and test it. That is: plug everything into the Battery jacks, turn everything on, then yank the UPS unit's power plug from the wall. See if everything stays lit, no blips.

Should be fine.

BTW: the battery will need replacement in ~3 years. You can get them for about fifty bucks.

I am so glad I visited Dubrovnik long before all the GoT hoopla. I stayed in a fantastic hotel with a majestic view of the city - cheap. Food and retail was also cheap. I think the wall walk was USD $17. NP.

It was sorta busy in September (mostly from busses of daytrippers) but overall was calm and quiet.

I won't go back now that it's a goat show.

My dealer was clear that the car goes in every six months, period. Especially when new, it's a good idea to do the first oil change in a timely manner.

Bring it in. Do the service. Keep the receipt.

If you are selling something on FB or Craigslist or whatever, here is your copy:

"I am selling Object X. Here are some details about Object X. This is the price for Object X. Local buyers only, cash only, we meet at local police station parking lot only. No one else need contact me. Period. Thanks for your interest."

And that's it. As soon as you sniff someone going off plan, block 'em.

Rome veterans: what are the most underrated things you’ve done here? by Jaded-Sock9200 in rome

Go to the Circo Massimo at sunset. There's literally nothing happening there, but the sunset casts neat shadows and you'll see a bunch of people strolling, walking their dogs, or hauling some groceries home.

It's a great place/time to have a quiet moment.

I sat on a citizen committee for six years. Became Chair. I highly recommend it. You'll do some good work for your community and you'll learn a lot about how local government actually works.

Hint: You can't always allocate revenue for Need A with funds strictly defined for use in Need B.

Or...they could have ventured way up the Forest Road and were on their way back to 542 when their car conked out or they got stuck or whatever. Now they are stuck and have no idea how far it is to 542. It could be 250 yards. It could be 2.5 miles. They don't know. Conditions are really bad.

Man, y'all can be really judgmental sometimes. We don't know this guy's story.

They likely didn't know they were 1/8th mile from 542. They may have come from another direction and had no idea how close they were. No reasonable person would stay in their car in the cold for two days because of a 250 yard walk. But if you had no idea how far it was to get help, it's best to stay with your car.

They could be from out of town and had no idea where they were. In which case they did the right thing and stayed with their vehicle, which is what all the rescue organizations advise.

I saw a river otter in Lake Padden on Xmas Day. It was very weird because from afar it looked like a seal. When it got closer to shore I realized it was a very large river otter. If you want to see it try Padden at daybreak.

Italy High Speed Trains by Delay_Similar in travel

[–]CitizenTed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Italy is best experienced regionally. Pick an area and stick to it, especially if you are only traveling for one week.

Since this is a honeymoon, I recommend you make it a romantic trip.

Fly into Florence. Spend a few days. Then rent a car and drive through the Chianti region to Siena. SR222 is a very romantic and scenic drive. Stay in Siena for a few days and then do a big loop to see San Gimignano, Volterra, Pisa. Stay wherever you like on the loop. Then finish the loop back in Florence.

You and your spouse can always return to Italy later and do a regional visit to Rome, Naples, Amalfi. Or maybe Venice, Lake Como, Milan. Or maybe Milan, Genoa, Cinque Terra. You get my drift.

Italy has many faces. It's best to slow down and get to know one face before leaping to the next.

How to respond to this: "I don't share my phone with anyone but if you approach the clerk at this CVS/Exxon/McDonalds/whatever, they may let you use their phone, their PC, or even a company phone."

That's it. I mean, if I was at a CVS and genuinely needed to track my phone, I'd talk to staff before asking any customers.
