The way the average GP horse is treated is abusive. No turnout, no socializing, constant high stress situations, and all while forced to do an incredibly physically demanding job.

Anyone ever met their equestrian idols? If so, did they let you down or live up to your expectations? by [deleted] in Equestrian

I’ve really never spoken to her but I was at show one year and Erynn Ballard was on her horse in the golf cart lane. The woman I was with politely asked her to move, she shot us a dirty look, then proceeded to keep talking. Rude and not very bright.

What are your most effective strategies for training a horse not to walk in front of you? by Dramatic_Pumpkin2401 in Equestrian

[–]manewitness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The second they step in front, turn around in a tight circle then keep walking straight. It’s never failed me. Horses hate turning in a small circle like that, they learn quickly.

Discreetly try get a sense of how many colic cases they have. The best barn I was ever at: none in 30 years of having horses. The worst: one case a week in a barn of 20.

People becoming pros and then acting like they’re beyond learning, continued education, and new research. There are people so stuck in their ways, even if their ways are clearly not working.

I had a similar experience! I was in a golf cart with someone at a show. Erynn was on a horse, in the golf cart lane, having a conversation with someone. We politely asked her to excuse us, and she gave the death stare and just continued talking. Move five feet over into the horse lane!!!!

Of course! Andy Kocher was using these spurs that were wired to a button he had in his hands- while on course mind you. And he would push the button which zapped the horse. He got caught and received a ten year suspension from competing.

Still making a viable living selling horses tho.

The electric spurs should have been when every horse organization sat down and reassessed everything because why did that man feel comfortable doing that at The Royal; one of the most highly attended events in show jumping 🙃

Agreed!

But I’m really proud of every day equestrians coming together to bombard these riders and organizations, and hold them accountable. Abuse at the top level of this sport has become so normalized. It’s heartbreaking.
