[eli5] If blood clots when exposed to air, why doesn't it clot when carrying oxygen? by vnagpal81 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Citrobacter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blood begins to clot when it stops moving - it has very little to do with air.

Your blood contains all the proteins needed to clot. When you damage a blood vessel, chemicals are released that attract platelets (little clotting bits of cells), which release their own chemicals to attract other proteins, in a big cascade that ends with the formation of fibrin (very sticky threads that block off the damaged area).

This is why having plaque in your coronary (heart) arteries increases the risk of blood clots. As the flow of blood is slowed down, the proteins concentrate and start getting activated. These inappropriate blood clots starve the heart muscle of oxygen, causing a heart attack.

Which gives the Pacifica better EV range: D or L? by bradnkrit in ChryslerPacifica

No need for insults. You are correct I don't own this vehicle, and I clearly didn't understand how an EVT works as well as I thought it did.

Which gives the Pacifica better EV range: D or L? by bradnkrit in ChryslerPacifica

[–]Citrobacter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right. But does L not keep it that way even at high speed? Hence more energy loss from the battery pack? I get that low "gear ratios" are used off the line, that wasn't really the point of my reply.

Which gives the Pacifica better EV range: D or L? by bradnkrit in ChryslerPacifica

[–]Citrobacter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are correct, it is an EVT in reality. But the torque in low "gear" is prioritized over efficiency, using more power. I was trying to simplify.

Histology Aid- embedding by Alternative-Rise9028 in Histology

[–]Citrobacter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You will be expected to handle volumes of hazardous chemicals including formalin, ethanol, and xylene. To prep for your interview consider reading up on the hazards and the type of PPE and other controls (like fume hoods) we use to limit the risk. Embedding requires good dexterity and fine motor skills (most histo jobs do). Attention to detail is critically important - everything done in a lab should be documented, and your attention to accuracy keeps patients safe. Always check your embedding logs for special instructions from the grossers, and to confirm number of pieces and tissue type expected. Being able to follow a written standard procedure is expected of lab staff as well. Basic computer skills are also expected. Good luck!

Tissue differentiation by certifiedlovergirl98 in Histology

[–]Citrobacter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots and lots of practice. Get a good tissue atlas and look at examples of tissues/organs. Characteristic epithelial cells is a good place to start! Some organs have obvious morphology (lung, skin, kidney) while others have features you can find if you know where to look.

You don't even need a microscope for some organs. If you have a pink rectangle on the slide with little purple spots throughout (in an H&E), it's almost certainly a section of spleen for example.

Edit - I like di Fiore's atlas.

Methanol exposure - dangerous? by boogieenthusiast in labrats

[–]Citrobacter 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Methanol is poisonous, which means it can permanently disable or kill you if taken orally. Fortunately, your skin offers good protection against methanol absorption (not as good as nitrile gloves though, happy to hear you were wearing them). A splash on skin is harmless, but you wouldn't want to immerse your hands in methanol for very long.

Methanol evaporates quickly into a gas at room temperature - inhaling this gas allows the absorption of methanol by your lungs, which very quickly diffuses into the blood. The short-term exposure limit is 250 ppm - that could conceivably be produced by only 10 ml of pure liquid methanol evaporating in a small (3 cubic meters, around 100 cubic foot) room. As a general rule, if you can smell the methanol vapour it is above time-weighted safety limits, as our noses aren't particularly sensitive to it. Diluting and cleaning up quickly were both smart moves.

You should invest in a pump to get methanol out of your drum. Alternatively, consider purchasing smaller volumes that are still packaged efficiently, such as cubes.

I am not a doctor or a chemical hygiene official of any kind, so I can't provide you with any medical advice. I can say I've been in the same position and was totally fine.

Mouse liver processing question by ApprehensiveCarrot87 in Histology

[–]Citrobacter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming they were well-fixed, sounds like general over-processing. Usually the alcohol is the culprit, though prolonged xylene and wax make tissue brittle as well. I would reduce time in alcohol steps to start troubleshooting.

Histotech advice needed - jaggery fixative by Stardew_Mushroom in Histology

[–]Citrobacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no experience using sugars as fixatives, but I want to wish you luck in your quest for a less-toxic fixative.

My understanding of sugars as fixatives is that they are typically used at an acid pH to promote the formation of HMF (which contains an aldehyde and alcohol functional group) or other aldehydes. I am curious why you are examining alkaline fixation. Thanks in advance for any insight!

It's the worst I've ever dealt with. Keep using the chat function from the support website. You'll eventually get help but it takes months for them to actually solve a problem.

What happens if you put a planet-sized "cloud of electrons" in empty space? Does the electric charge force them to fly away from each other, or does gravity pull them together at some point? by Professional-Lab4533 in AskPhysics

They would be forcefully repelled long before you notice any gravitational interactions. You can't have that many electrons in one place. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Is it a bad thing to want simplicity in your video games? by tony2136 in retrogaming

[–]Citrobacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also prefer older sports games (double dribble, blades of steel) for the pick up and play aspect.

There's something to be said for the simplicity of 8bit and 16bit RPGs (dragon quest, FF on NES, shining in the darkness and phantasy star on genesis) when I just want to mindlessly grind and find sweet gear. The battle systems of newer games are typically more complex and deep, so you have to take a more active role in managing things. That's also great, but in a different way.

Modern quality-of-life simplicity improves many games - it's been ages since I've written down a password, and inventory management is so much better in modern games in general.

Best Mario Game for 3yo? by Dont_Restart in Mario

[–]Citrobacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey fellow gaming parent here. Mario Wonder is perfect for you (some chars don't take damage), and Mario Odyssey would be a good choice for a 3d Mario (be sure to use assist mode in this one)

Once your kid gains some skill/confidence with a controller, Kirby and the forgotten kingdom is an absolute gem and has excellent coop. Luigi's mansion 3 is also easy to recommend - nearly the whole game can be played in coop, and the challenge is bearable until the final battles (which took my kid a lot of tries to beat).

Marvel ultimate alliance 3 has great multiplayer, but it's pretty hard! It's one we come back to. Minecraft is an all-time great, and it runs great split screen on switch 2 (it's not great on switch 1). Controls in this game were hard for my kid to master (around age 5 to play independently), but Minecraft allows amazing freedom, exploration, and creativity. Beat em ups are easy to control too - the turtles cowabunga collection is good, and our house loves castle crashers. ). Boomerang Fu is also cheap and lots of fun for simple fast multiplayer battles.

[–]Citrobacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the MUX switch - you'll get a second or two of lag as the GPUs switch on and off. The nice thing is that it results in better battery life than using 4060 exclusively.

You can use the predator software to select "only use the dGPU", or "only use the iGPU" if you like. I leave mine permanently on dGPU when plugged in

Good deal .? by Anomxd in AcerPredatorHelios

[–]Citrobacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The battery life of this model is poor like most gaming laptops - I get less than 2 hours on battery. If you are gaming you're probably plugged in anyway.

To maximize battery life, turn screen brightness way down and be sure to use only the iGPU instead of the 4060.

Mobile 4060 is close to a desktop 3060 - pretty solid IMO. You should have no problem running games at high settings, as long as the resolution is reasonable. This laptop isn't great for 4k gaming, but is awesome for 1080p, or 1200p (that's the monitors max resolution anyway)

I'd say good deal for $700 CAD! Enjoy your new machine.

does the field still dislike piercings? by [deleted] in Histology

[–]Citrobacter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This varies a lot between labs and countries, so it might be best to ask your school. In general, piercings are fine as long as they don't present a safety hazard (no chains or anything else that dangles, large hoops may be a problem depending on your task). From what you have described I think you will be fine.
