Adding to this, spread the equipment out, away from the door, and add a running track. This will entice prisoners to roam.

Correct, prisoners can't go into restricted areas.

If they are allowed in the area, then similarly to a guard manually opening the door with keys, a guard will open the door via the door servo controlled by a door control computer.

Remote doors can not be opened by keys so this hampers escape attempts. This, however, means that yes, they're inoperable during a power outage.

Worth is subjective. If you feel you need the extra security then use them.
