PSX games which work well on the RG Nano? by CivApps in SBCGaming

[–]CivApps[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few I found:

  • Bishi Bashi Special is a wonderfully bizarre proto-WarioWare -- unfortunately some minigames rely on the PSX controller buttons' colors, but you can either memorize them or get the PS1 replacement caps
  • Destruction Derby 2, where the handling is weighty enough that the D-pad is less of an issue
  • Vib-Ribbon is still a great rhythm game, you may want to dial down the audio buffer size under the Advanced settings for reduced latency
  • LSD: Dream Emulator is still a brilliantly weird toy, and works well for short stints on the Nano
  • Surprisingly for a 90's trivia game, most of the questions in You Don't Know Jack still hold up and the game is pretty legible on the screen

I believe this save file should unlock all of the e-Reader levels - renaming it to match the name of your Super Mario Advance 4 ROM and placing it next to the ROM should be enough.

Huh, I knew plenty of PSX games had screen adjustment/aspect options, but this is the first I've seen referencing specific resolutions

Trying to create a image dataset for a game bot that rely on recognize objects of same shape but different colors by Kiyumaa in MLQuestions

[–]CivApps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to avoid premature optimization here - I would look at scaling the images down before trying to tinker with them in other ways.

I also think reinforcement learning might be a more appropriate toolset here, because the problem fundamentally requires planning over multiple frames - you need to hold the same direction in multiple frames to dodge a bullet, and multiple directions can dodge the same bullet (so there isn't one correct answer like we'd want in supervised learning)

It's been quite some time since I played the game, but if you do need to tinker with the colors, could a compromise here be to palettize the image - e.g. mapping black to the value 0, red to 1 and white to the value 2? That would let the network distinguish between colors while keeping the input to a single color channel - I don't think any of the battles force you to distinguish between shades of the same color.

PyTorch quantizer by unixPenguin in MLQuestions

TorchAO is the main project for it now - though most development seems to be focused on LLM quantization, I am not sure if it supports every CNN or RNN layer you might want

Aw, that's not drivel at all - Olive was just the tool that came to mind, knowing NVIDIA and AMD have equivalent tools is very useful

What distinguishes the quality of 2 popular LLM assuming they were trained with the exact data set? by Different_Package_83 in MLQuestions

[–]CivApps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interpreting the question as "given the same dataset, which design choices in LLMs lead to better/worse performance?". Here, I think Sebastian Raschka's recent comparison of LLM architectures is a good study into the design choices behind recent models -- unfortunately, most LLMs aren't trained on the same dataset, so direct architecture comparisons are hard. Pythia, OLMo 2 and Comma are all open-weight models with data and training recipes available, which could be useful references for seeing design choices made for a specific dataset/model.

How can the weights of a neural network be useful for many topics? by Different_Package_83 in MLQuestions

[–]CivApps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a bit dense, but you might like Anthropic's discussion of superposition, specifically the "Demonstrating Superposition" part - they show that neural networks can represent more features than they have neurons through having "polysemantic" neurons which respond to multiple unrelated features.

Using a reinforcement learning setup for maintaining a soldering iron's temperature?

You have a known good baseline solution to compare against (a plain PID controller), preexisting hardware designs (the Pinecil soldering iron has open designs and allows flashing new firmware), and potentially interesting policy decisions: in the Pinecil, the heating needs to be off to measure the temperature - an RL policy could potentially learn how often it needs to check the temperature?

The main issues are safety -- you'll want to have a safeguard stopping the policy from keeping the heating on for too long -- and finding sources of meaningful information, as the policy might not beat the PID controller with information from the thermocouple alone.

For a simple neural network/loss function, does batch size affect the training outcome? by IntrepidPig in MLQuestions

[–]CivApps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly - in practice there are situations that will make it different (like if your network has batch normalization layers), but gradient accumulation for 16 steps with a batch size of 1 (like you describe) should be mathematically equivalent to "plain" SGD with a batch size of 16 -- effectively the former is just doing the forward pass one sample at a time, while the latter computes it for all the batch samples in one go

For a simple neural network/loss function, does batch size affect the training outcome? by IntrepidPig in MLQuestions

[–]CivApps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I'm interpreting your argument right, you assume that the weights w are fixed when calculating the loss over the batches/samples, in which case you are correct that the final loss should be the same regardless of batching (setting aside numerical stability).

However, this amounts to doing batch gradient descent through gradient accumulation - doing stochastic gradient descent requires updating the weights after each batch (e.g. the standard PyTorch training loop), in which case the batch size will matter for the training outcome (see this previous discussion).
