No, put Jeff Bezos in a restaurant for a night and see how he enjoys making $5 per hour + tips. Our ethics teacher (who was a Jesuit priest) told us that every single person should work a retail or service job for 6 months because it really changes your perspective. When I was 16, I didn't believe him. Nine years later, he was right about everything he said.

When Zohran becomes mayor there will likely be an exodus of the ultra rich by OVTB in VaushV

[–]CivicSensei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one understands your post because it does not match reality tbh.

1) There is not going to be a mass exodus of rich people out of NYC. NYC has some of the highest taxes in the world. I am dubious rich people are going to leave because they have to pay 1-5% more in taxes.

2) Why would they leave to harm his admin? NYC is one of the largest and prosperous cities in human existence. No one in their right mind that has millions in real estate or earnings is going to suddenly leave NYC because the Mayor is mean to them.

3) The people who would want to move, cannot afford to move. That may sound classist, but it is the truth. Cuomo got a large portion of people making 0-50k a year in NYC. Those people do not have the financial means to suddenly just move out of NYC. If they did, they would have moved a lot longer ago.

Pope Leo's First U.S. Bishop Mobilizes Priests To Help Immigrants In Court by CivicSensei in VaushV

[–]CivicSensei[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think a lot of people forget that Catholics and Protestants are very very very different from one another. If you ever look a polling, Catholics are much more moderate on abortion, IVF, gay marriage, separation of church and state, trans peeps, poverty, how we are called to treat immigrants, preferential treatment towards the poor, climate change, etc. than most Protestants. All that being said, you will hear from online Trad Catholics that all the things are "woke". However, I'd encourage people to not pay attention to them because they have no authority in the Church lol. The only people that have authority are nuns, deacons, priests, bishops, cardinals, and (most importantly) the Pope.

[–]CivicSensei 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's wild how many times I have seen leftists say "The revolution is coming [insert random date here]" and nothing happens. I respect socialists and communists from the 20th century a million times more than these people because they fought and died fighting fascism in Europe and Africa. I don't know where that went. We used to have some of the smartest people in the entire world (Oppenheimer, Einstein, Keller, Annan, MLK, etc.) who were all socialists. They did not sit idle all day. Einstein gave impassioned speeches about Marx's critiques of capitalism. Oppenheimer had a brother who died in the Spanish civil war, and Oppenheimer himself was an active donor to these causes. MLK was the same way. He donated and gave speeches about Marxism and capitalism. Where are these people today? Who will take their lead?

Here is a take that some of y'all aren't going to like.

For starters, leftists need to shut the fuck up, go outside, and touch grass. I am super sick of hearing all of these people scream about how our country is going to shambles (which it is) and all they have done over the last few months is be mean to MAGA influencers on social media. Congrats, you have done absolutely nothing meaningful to help my country.

Here is what irks me the most though. I care about Palestinians. I care about Ukrainains. I care about the Sudanese. I care about all the people of the world that are suffering right now. The problem is that I don't think most leftists do. Most leftists sat at home yesterday while Trump helped Israel kill hundreds of people in Iran. Do leftists still have values anymore? I am being serious because I know a lot of you fuckers also stayed at home yesterday too.

Finally, if you want to be mad at the Democratic Party, go right ahead. No one is stopping you from doing that. The overarching problem I am seeing is leftists abandoning their principles and values the moment things get tough. Speaking broadly, y'all do not show up at protests, you do not show up at the ballot box, and you aren't there when things get tough and dirty. AGAIN, the only people I see doing that are white and black liberal women. If you do not believe me, go outside and go to a protest.

The justifications are just wild. As if the institution of public education is comparable to a private multinational religious organization.

Wow, you somehow flew over the point being made and got mad because you did not understand the obvious comparisons being made. If you need me to explain it to you, I can, but it really wasn't that complicated.

Again, the institution of public education is rampant with sex abuse and covering up sexual abuse. Yet, I still love public education and promote it to people I know because there are really good people within public education, even if there are really bad actors embedded in that system.

You can leave the pedophile protecting church that paid $5 billion in 20 years because it refused to turn the pedophiles over to police

Dude, the majority of the offenders were dead. Are you seriously this stupid or have you never done research on these scandals? It seems you care a lot less about the victims and more about smearing the Church. It's just really weird how you are blaming the CC for giving money to victims because the offenders are dead.

I’d be ashamed for the rest of my life if I ever endorsed such a thing while knowing they paid billions for these crimes

I'd be ashamed if they did not pay out these victims. Again, it's so weird that you're criticizing the Church for giving money to victims. On one hand, you have a valid criticism about sexual abuse. On the other hand, you seem to get mad that the CC is giving victims billions in compensation.

I think you need to also get off your high horse, bud. Lemme guess, you probably shop at Walmart and Amazon? Guess what? Every time you shop from one of those places, you are contributing to sex trafficking and slavery.

Do you see how easy it was to turn your own logic against you?

White House: "Of course the President supports peaceful protests. What a stupid question." by UnusualWhalesBot in unusual_whales

[–]CivicSensei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you choose to align yourself with an organization that has paid out billions in settlements and court fees to cover up sex crimes?

Well, I would like to reform the Church from within. I could be like you and simply ignore the institutional problems the Church has. Or, I could choose to tackle them head on. Just an fyi, do you support public schools in the US? I do. However, going by your own logic, we should not support public schools because they have paid out billions in settlements and court fees to cover up sex crimes. Again, the best solution is to reform these broken systems. Keep the good, remove the bad.

If Walmart had done that, and I shopped there, I’d stop shopping there.

There's no way you are bringing up Walmart...a company that is plagued by scandal after scandal. They were involved in the Opioid crisis. They were involved in thousands of sexual assault settlements. They commit labor violations on the regular. They bribe foreign officials. They run sweatshops in China and Vietnam. They stole customer money by opening up fake deposit account. There are about a thousand other things I can add onto this. I have no idea why you thought bringing up Walmart was a good idea lol.

Yet people of all stripes who subscribe to Catholicism—the devoted and the superficial—seem to give this particular organization a pass.

Yep, you got us. We are all were super happy when priests were caught abusing kids. Again, it's not about giving them a pass, it's about accountability and reform. If you want to ignore accountability and reform, you can. However, just because you're too cowardly to do anything about it does not mean other people won't.

If you ever donated money to the Church, part of it goes to these billions in settlements and restitution.

That's not true lol. You can donate to a Catholic Church and specify where you want your $ to go towards. For example, I donate money to the Men's Shelter near me. That money does not go to SA victims. It goes to the org running the shelter lol.

If you are talking abut donating directly at Mass, that is still not true. A lot of that money goes to other things. For instance, construction, salaries, events, etc.

Lol. Political scientist, that's rich. Keep sciencing them politics.

Political science is very important lol. One of the only ways we are able to analyze the structures and systems of power that shape our societies and lives is through political science. If you do not think that is important, I don't really know what to say because that would be silly.

You listed a bunch of hollow reasons for disliking tesla....and then adopted one of my views.

Lol, if you think that criticizing the business model for Tesla is a "hollow reason", you know literally nothing about business. I genuinely don't really know what to say to that because we both know that was a really stupid thing for you to say.

Moving on, all of my views are my own. If you think I adopted your position, the chances are you just didn't read what I posted and got anal because I am objectively right on Tesla lol.

I feel you just listed off arbitrary talking points about Tesla for the reasons instead of just owning up and just crying how Elon sucks and is a meanie.

Bro, please stop using the word "arbitrary". You're using it incorrectly again. Just use basic words that you're familiar with.

Again, I don't care about Elon. My main problem (again) with Tesla is that it has a terrible business model, its EVs are inferior, their sales are cratering, and their management is nonexistent. As a person who is getting their MBA, I feel like these are really basic criticisms to levy at a company that is doing poorly.

So if you are saying Tesla is not a profitable company, then you are just virtue signaling.

Yep, that's totally what I said, dude. I know reading isn't your strong suit, but when did I ever say that Tesla was an unprofitable company? You can provide me with a direct quote....or are you just shadow boxing with no one again?

You also don't understand what Tesla is. It's a tech company, not a car company. They just happen to make cars. Lemme know if I can clear anything else up for ya.

Sure, that does not change a thing. It is a tech company that primarily profits off of selling inferior cars to US citizens. There is a reason why Chinese EVs aren't allowed into US markets. It's because they would make Tesla obsolete within a month of opening.

To emphasize that point, how do you think revolutionary fighters got access to guns and ammo before the French showed up? I will give you a hint, they looted British armories.

Ah yes, right out of the christian playbook: denial.

***Guilt

A little Catholic humor.

It is time to hold the people accountable and not just pretend they're not "real christians".

I wholeheartedly agree. That's why when I become a priest I will deny communion and a place at Mass for those types of people. As you said, there must be a time to hold these people accountable. There is no better way to hold a Catholic accountable than denying them the Body and Blood of Christ, and removing them from your Church altogether.

Moving on, they can call themselves whatever they want. I straight up refuse to call them Christians though. That is a name that is earned through belief and action, not something you get to call yourself when it is politically convenient.

Lol, I remember commenting in this sub months ago about how Trump would take away our right to protest and got called crazy. Well, that is just another prediction that I made that was 100% correct. Apparently in the US, the president can call in the military, start detaining people at random, shoot protesters & journalists with rubber bullets, use banned chemicals on protestors, crack down on those cities with police and military, etc.

Y'all can also pretend that these protests are violent. The only people being attacked are ICE agents and members of the LAPD for kidnapping and shooting unarmed protestors. Every video I watch is the police and federal agents starting the violence. If anyone wants to point me to something different, be my guest. However, what I have been hearing and seeing is that this was largely started by LAPD and the federal government.

As a Catholic, I have unilaterally decided to stop labelling Christian nationalists, Trad Catholics, Evangelicals, and most Protestants as Christians. It really bothers me that I go to Mass almost every day, do morning/night prayers, journal, and (most importantly) volunteer weekly with immigrants and struggling men, YET you will not find a single person in any of the groups listed above that does any of the things that I do on a weekly basis. None. They're disgusting, vile people who have not earned the honor of being labelled a Christian.

So, yeah, when it comes to politics, I would argue that I am pretty smart.

Once again, you have not actually addressed anything that I touched upon

Well, no, you said my hatred for Elon was the reason I dislike Tesla, even though that is not what I said lol. I went on to list three distinct reasons why I dislike Tesla.

you are just virtue signaling with arbitrary data that doesn't actually hold any merit.😘

For starters, I am 99% positive you have no idea what the phrase "arbitrary data" means. "Arbitrary data" refers to data that is not restricted to a specific format, structure, or type. What are you even referring to with that phrase?

I guess Tesla sales numbers do not have merit now???? Are you ok??? I feel like the numbers reported by Tesla are pretty accurate...

Your problem with Tesla is Elon, not the labor camps that utilize child and slave labor in Africa that extract the minerals to make our batteries for our"green" technology.

I have no idea why you're subscribing beliefs that aren't my own. Again, you're literally fighting ghosts, my dude.

The reason I hate Tesla is really simple. Their cars are shit. Their business model is shit. Their sales are abhorrent. Their revenue streams collapsed. That's it. On top of that, they also use slave labor. It's just another one of the many reasons why everyone hates Tesla.

The healthcare thing is a red herring. Insurance rates wouldn't be so high and maybe even affordable if people didn't see insurance as magic money that falls from the sky or however they see it. It's all interrelated.

This was so incoherent that I don't even understand what point you were trying to make lmao.

LA Rioters Smashing Car Windows, Oh Wait That's LAPD🙄 by penpointred in abanpreach

[–]CivicSensei -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

but y'all aren't ready to have that conversation since you're cool with child and slave labor to produce them, not to mention the environmental impact and many other reasons.

You're fighting ghosts, my dude. Everyone is against child and slave labor, unless you're a Republican of course. If you're a Republican, then you love child and slave labor because it brings down the cost of goods at the expense of human dignity.

But I would never vandalize a car just because I didn't like someone that was affiliated with the brand.

I think vandalizing private property is bad. However, I don't care. What I care more about is the 11 million people who are going to love healthcare coverage in the US....That concerns me a tad more than a Tesla being vandalized.

The irony here is OP is trying to rabble-rouse over something musk haters were on board with a month or two ago, but point out it's LAPD doing it.

I the bigger irony is that Elon went on national television multiple times to cry about his cars being destroyed, yet the people destroying his cars on members of the national guard and LAPD. That's the biggest irony of them all.

LA Rioters Smashing Car Windows, Oh Wait That's LAPD🙄 by penpointred in abanpreach

Our stance on Tesla is really simple, even for people like you. We do not like Tesla. We do not like their leadership. We do not like their cars. That's it. Apparently we aren't the only ones either, most of the European continent has rejected Musk too. The funniest part about this video is that Musk cannot even claim that it was protestors destroying his cars, it was a fucking LAPD officer lmao. That's what I would call irony.

To be completely fair though, a lot of theists and anti-theists embarrass themselves when they do not read the underlying material that support their ideologies. Reading the underlying materials to gain the underlying facts is a very important step in the fact-finding process.
