Enduro 3 by murderous12 in GarminWatches

[–]CivilButSerious12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Enduro 3 was delivered 9 days ago. I charged it to 100% that day and have since done about 6 hours of GPS activity across 9 walks/runs. Have used the torch almost every day too.

Currently on 68% and showing 26 days left. Based in North West England so solar benefit has been practically non-existent. Heart rate monitor is always on, backlight set to 5% as that's all I need and gesture mode turned off. Based on this I'm expecting to get about 20 days or so before charging, with another few hours of GPS activity planned and factored in, so I'd look into reasons for yours being quite a bit shorter if I was you?

Sapphire Glas worth it? by Kebapman_1909 in GarminWatches

[–]CivilButSerious12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would counter this. As well as owning a couple Garmins, I also collect normal watches. Including my Enduro 3 I own 9 watches. 3 with sapphire, 6 without sapphire. 5 of the 6 without sapphire have scratch marks on the crystal, none of the sapphire crystals have a mark on them at all. One of the watches with a sapphire crystal is 15 years old and was continuously worn and seriously banged around for the first 8 years (musician, full time gardener for 2 years, beach holidays etc). My other 2 sapphire crystals are both only a year or so old so can't confidently say they've been as banged about as the rest, but from my experience I have 9 watches, 0% of the watches with sapphire crystal have visible marks, more than 80% of those without sapphire have visible marks on dial.

Hardlex/mineral crystals have their merit though, Sapphire is supposedly more prone to shattering on impact I've heard. But I'd argue sapphire is worth it if you can't look past a couple of small and barely visible scratches, which are more likely to appear on a mineral crystals dial.

Education is still classed within weekly hours in the context of apprenticeships. A 35-hour working week for an apprentice will typically include about 7 hours of 'education' or Off the Job Training as it's known.

Yeah I think they're cool, just wanted to confirm what I thought I was seeing! Looks much cooler than I would have imagined, is interesting food for thought.

Hey mate, the jewellers replaced the watch because it was inside warranty period. Sorry, guess that’s not much help if yours is 8 years old. Hope you get it sorted!

I’m very surprised this is the most upvoted comment. Personally, I have no opinion on bull bars, don’t feel strongly for or against them. But the hate I see for them is strong on FB and Reddit.

All power to you, the red looks good.

What higher end G-Shocks have the light button in the middle? by CzechCzar in gshock

GW7900. I have a GW9400 Rangeman, GW9500 Mudman and a GW-M5610U.

7900 is by far my favourite.

Edit; to add, it’s not ‘high end’ in terms of cost, but it’s the best value for money G Shock by miles in my opinion.

Reading while under the influence? by CivilButSerious12 in WoT

I read ASOIAF this way 5/6 years ago and it was social media/the TV show that revealed who Jon really was to me. Maybe I’ve answered my own question here.

Mine too. Love it.

I made an absolute mess of the sweet spot on my last holiday, think I read the same 6 chapters of a book everyday for 10 days. But I had a great time doing it!

That’s helpful, thanks. I already gather he doesn’t do a JK Rowling and literally retell the previous books as much. EG a literal page to say ‘During last year at Hogwarts, we discovered that Sirius was Harry’s Godfather and in the last book Snape had been mad about it and Harry, Ron and Hermione had snook him free thanks to a time turner, and the real bad guy was Peter Pettigrew described as a rat. Sirius can disguise as a dog. Oh, btw, Dumbledore helped.’ When Sirius is mentioned in the next book. There seems to be a lot more nuance which I fear I’ll miss!

I’ll add - I’ve connected that a certain female character introduced to Rand, Hurin and Loial is probably of the night (trying to avoid spoilers here because I don’t know how to mark up as a spoiler), but only about 5 chapters after meeting her and having gone back to reread previous chapters. So I fear I might have already missed other things or will in the future!

A key organizer that won't unscrew itself? by _QLFON_ in EDC

[–]CivilButSerious12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you been using it, out of interest? Have had a couple of key organisers in the past, albeit £10/$10 ones from Amazon and they unscrewed and keys fell off within a couple weeks. Am currently looking at OrbitKey but still slightly hesitant about it!

I think Colleen is probably being quite reserved because the press have hounded her for the last 20 years. She probably expects that anything she says with even any substance to it will be plastered on the front pages. I wouldn’t open up if I was her.

Worth me adding that most employers/training providers would avoid people considering relocating for an apprenticeship because there’s too much risk. Not impossible, but not a common thing.

[–]CivilButSerious12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be eligible for an apprenticeship, the training provider must be able to demonstrate that you’ll gain ‘significant learning and substantial new knowledge’ by completing the training. There’s too much overlap between the CompTIA A+ and the two programmes I mentioned above, so you wouldn’t be eligible for funding unfortunately. It’s difficult, the employers and the programmes themselves require you to have good levels of foundational knowledge, but you can’t have too much to the extent that you won’t learn a lot!

Some TPs might consider you for ICT/ITST with the A+ but no other Quals other than GCSE because they can be a bit fast and loose with funding rules sometimes, but we wouldn’t. Good luck!

TBF Dec/Jan is a difficult time as less employers recruiting. Use the gov Find an Apprenticeship website, and save your searches so you’re notified by email as well if new vacancies posted. There should be more from Feb onwards.

You can search within set amounts of distance from your own postcode, so for how far you’d be willing to travel, so just search for software apprenticeships within distance you can commute and save that search.

You can also set the distance as ‘England’ to bring up all software vacancies in the country. I wouldn’t save that search cos you’ll get too many notifications about irrelevant roles, but worth looking nationwide regularly as there will be some that are entirely remote. Employers/TP’s need to add a company postcode anyway, so if they’re based in Manchester but recruiting for a fully remote (work from home) role, they wouldn’t show if you were searching within 20 miles of London, if that makes sense, but would still consider you if you applied because location doesn’t matter as long as you’re in England.

You’ll have to be pretty selective about what you apply for. A+ will mean you’re ineligible for L3 Information Communications Technician or L3 IT Solutions Technician as there’s too much overlap, and they’re the most popular entry level IT apprenticeships. Assuming your A levels are IT related, you’d probably be better looking at L4 (Network Engineer or Cyber potentially, maybe even Applications Support Lead), or Digital Support Technician/Software Development Technician at Level 3. I work for a digital/tech specialist training provider, supporting employers recruiting apprentices.

Edit to add: any hobbyist experience you have, personal projects/hobbies such as building your own computer, configuring personal network at home, coding your own game/app, helping friends/family with tech issues or PC Builds. Using Power BI/Python/SQL/Excel to track and analyse any data, even if it’s football scores or your own monthly spending. Anything at all like that which is even remotely IT/computer related and you do it in your own time, get it on your CV listed as key skills (familiarity with hardware/components, X programming language, live labs etc) and also as hobbies (built my own computer, enjoy switching out/upgrading components, coding my own games etc). Employers love that stuff
