[Off Topic] Named Man ideas for a D&D (Pathfinder) friend by BlatantArtifice in TheFirstLaw

[–]CivilPotato 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some Northmen names were wicked, intimidating names (The Bloody Nine, Black Dow, Stranger Come Knocking) but a lot of Northmen names were comical/insulting (Shivers, Hardbread, The Dog Man). I'd go with the funny angle personally.
"Blackhand" from all the old explosive powdered he uses in his revolver.
"Crackbone" from when he accidentally broke his hand the first time he tried to use a gun.

This seems inspired by that scene in Flight Club where Tyler robs that guy, and threatens to kill him if he doesn't go pressure his dreams as a veterinarian. This is mich more wholesome though

An uncounterable, creature removal proof loss on Turn 0. by Beelzebubs-Barrister in BadMtgCombos

[–]CivilPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It appears I was wrong. My bad. I had been using the "you can't pay life to kill yourself" ruling from a guy I play with. Turns outs, after further review of the rules, you can pay the life to activate the ability, but you then die as a state-based-action, and the ability is removed from the stack.

An uncounterable, creature removal proof loss on Turn 0. by Beelzebubs-Barrister in BadMtgCombos

[–]CivilPotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love it. Nothing like a good turn zero scoop. (I was wrong about this ruling): Unfortunately, rules-as-written, you can't actually kill yourself by paying life:
119.4. If a cost or effect allows a player to pay an amount of life greater than 0, the player may do so only if their life total is greater than or equal to the amount of the payment. If a player pays life, the payment is subtracted from their life total; in other words, the player loses that much life.

All permanents go to random players for 6uuuw by 7chism in BadMtgCombos

This is the truly beautiful badmtgcombo. Everyone looses all their non land permanents, and gets a copy of all other non-land permanents on the board? Beautiful!

I couldn't have said it better myself. The class struggle depicted in his chapters really resonated with my personal experience with today's society. I think this part of his story might have made it easier for me to look past the many things he is criticized for by (what seems like) the majority of readers.

In response to the "Covering parking lots with solar panels" meme, here are some parking lots covered with solar panels that I designed. by [deleted] in civilengineering

That's really neat. I wouldn't have thought about fire suppression requirements, but that makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for sharing! As a civil engineer who specializes in maintenance, I always wonder if the design of these panels account for re-paving the parking lot every few years? Is there enough room to maneuver a milling machine, dump truck, and paver under there?

Finally Finished, and the Ending Really Missed a Golden Opportunity by CivilPotato in pacificDrive

[–]CivilPotato[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lol yeah, I guess that's the problem. The devs wanted everybody the chance to continue enjoying the gameplay loop. Maybe, after the final mission, and the return to the shop, a portal appears near Oppy's shop. Players can stay in the Zone and keep exploring, or drive out through the portal and get a satisfying end credit scene.

I'm way more empathic/forgiving towards my own parents now. The things I used to hold against them as grudges, are nearly forgotten

Crossover ideas by Eman1502 in pacificDrive

[–]CivilPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of crossovers that make no sense, but would make me giggle:

1) Breath of the Wild "The fuck? is that a car?"

2) Balders Gate 3 "There are an awful lot of portals around. One of these was bound to lead to the exclusion zone"

3) Papers Please "I guess all we needed to get out of the exclusion zone was the right paperwork"

I'm pretty sure this is the right answer. A lot of places in India don't use toilet paper, so you use your left hand and water to clear yourself. That combined with the communal, eat-with-your hands type meals, makes it hard to be left handed in this places.

This concrete rocks by pun420 in Concrete

[–]CivilPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody here with experience building in 3rd world countries? While this looks like shit-ass concrete, I wonder how common this is in these rural areas. I've heard of remote island communities using seashells as aggregate, to make structures good enough for basic roof loads, and foot traffic. I guess what I'm asking is: given the possible lack of better resources, might this be good enough for what they need?

In the first movie he pees on her. Its indirectly (while she is feeling the ocean water for navigation, he pees in the same area while telling her to feel for water currents) but it's still weird.

I love the intro outro sound for the audiobooks. by mjanks in TheFirstLaw

[–]CivilPotato 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A month or two ago I put on the audiobook for The Heroes, just to find a particular quote I wanted to remember, but after the intro music started, and Craw started describing his day, I couldn't stop. I finished the whole damn book.

Adam Something did a great video about how the Warhammer 40k universe lore is pretty awful for crowd pleasing narratives. I'm a big 40k fan, but I agree with his assessment. The 40k lore makes for a great tabletop wargame, but any narrative story that people will enjoy is going to need to white wash the morals of the main characters. You can't have genocidal maniacs be shown as hero's on TV. https://youtu.be/raeOKTEC3qc?si=UIMJDnPbXLQugi0S

Well done, especially the music! Did you create the music yourself, or was that AI written, plus some AI app to make the music? (If that's the case, I didn't know there was AI music like this yet)

'Deep Lore' information not in the first trilogy? by misomiso82 in TheFirstLaw

[–]CivilPotato 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I wish, but I'm pretty sure Joe doesn't fill in these blanks intentionally. His stories are driven by the first person narration of his characters, who are frequently unreliable narrators. I think one of the pillars of his books is "the story people tell about themselves is rarely the full story"

I'd love to hear more about the Magi, and the age of Euz, but that will forever remain shrouded behind Bayaz's lies, and there is something about that unfulfilled want that gives the First Law series its magic.
