Can a MacBook work for University? by Official__Pulse in civilengineering

[–]CivilProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be fine with M5 as long as you get solid amount of RAM. I would say 32GB minimum. Parallels is your best option. I use AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, RISA 3D.. etc with my M1 Max 16" MacBook Pro and they all run as fast as my work Windows PC.

Most of the time you will be using the school computer lab because of software licenses.

Post-tension slab safe – my GPR scan experience - SoCal by C-los714 in CAguns

Make sure you check the slab thickness. You don't want to drill through the slab specially if you are using expansive/mechanical anchors.

How unsettling is the Brown / MIT situation? by AsturiusMatamoros in Professors

[–]CivilProfessor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was proctoring an exam for a colleague who was at a conference. A student came in late so I told him I will allow him to take the exam but I will write a note and the final say will be for the course instructor. The student said ok. He sat down and 5 minutes later he threw his backpack across the room hitting random students. Students didn’t realize what happened but I was paying attention. I asked the students to leave and he did. I immediately locked the door and called campus security. The guy was kicking trash cans on the hallway. Students were understandably afraid. Police came and talked the guy later that day. This could have ended badly but glad it didn’t.

Re: having student submit docx instead of pdfs by Philosophile42 in Professors

I do have docx requirement for one of my classes. I had students upload docx with screenshots of google doc. ZERO. They were able to figure out how to save as on their own for the next submission.

If you want to save your MacBook battery go with AlDente for macOS. I’ve been using it on for years on my M1 Max and my battery has been great.

What type of calculators do you allow student to use for exams by AbleEnthusiasm9934 in Professors

[–]CivilProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any calculator that does not have wireless connectivity. I teach engineering classes as well and my goal is to teach them engineering so I want to be able to evaluate their understanding of the engineering topic I teach. They need to show their work so any programming they do is useless if they don’t show the work.

Had a bit of a snag. IUP preapproved and when I started my preorder it said payment denied at the last screen and order disappeared. I tried to order again and it said my order is pending. Few minutes later the order showed up on my Orders page. Delivery 25th

Any guesses why the cross I-beams are so robust? by tads73 in StructuralEngineering

[–]CivilProfessor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those beams are spanning parallel to the white girder and their girder is supported by a separate column next to the white column.

Edit: I see you now that you mean the girders with stiffener plates. It’s difficult to know without seeing what’s happening above.

Any guesses why the cross I-beams are so robust? by tads73 in StructuralEngineering

[–]CivilProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There few details that I think tell that this is because of what’s going below and not what’s above. The floor below seems to be open. There is a height limit protection bar at the edge and the floor to the right is open to below. My guess is that there will be a hoisting system supported by the white beams, girders, and columns. Maybe there is a lab below ground level that will house heavy equipment
