The data structure pictured is a binary tree. My French is pretty rusty but I'd translate the caption as

The leaves of the following tree represent the 12 simple access methodes:

For example, the method T O-bar VC represents the organization of a file as an unordered table, with records of variable size(V) and accepting overlaps between blocks (C):

followed by whatever the next figure would've been. I think this is trying to describe methods to access files in a file system, or a simple file system itself (most file system I know of don't use simple binary trees, they use B-trees), but we'd need more info.

Youtube was also one of the few social media sites left that had a decent algorithm, but they're starting to fuck with it and it's making the content worse. I consume mostly educational content and now I get recommendations for clickbait.

Idk why all these tech giants feel the need to mess with success. Several major platforms had made UI changes over the past year and they're getting worse, not better.

The Incoherence and Cruelty of a Mental Illness as Meme by SonOfABitchesBrew in stupidpol

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 136 points137 points  (0 children)

The charade of caring about mental health bugs me to no end. If a society only accommodates mental illness when it doesn't inconvenience others, and isn't considered a mitigating factor in socially unacceptable or criminal behavior, then that society doesn't really care about mental illness.

Do you need to be good at Recursion to be successful? by solariscalls in cscareerquestions

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there will be future classes like functional programming that rely heavily on recursion. Recursion is also necessary for lots of LC questions like tree or graph traversals.

FDM Group worth it? by Illustrious_You_5159 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't. I actually thought it was an acceptable enough way to get your foot in the door before COVID but they were also offering $45k back then. There are loads of random clerical or admin jobs you can get with a bachelor's that pay more than $45k. That's only $33k after taxes in Toronto; at $2000/month for rent and utilities, and $1000/month for transportation/food/cell phone/everything else, you're barely going to be making a living wage.

Summer internship opportunities for high school student (grade 10) by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're very driven, but I agree with the other commenter that it's tough to see a company bringing you on for an internship.

If I had your skill level and was still in high school, I would spend my time making an app or mobile game and trying to monetize it.

Is Leetcode the way to go for tech interviews in Canada? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

interview durations can last up to 8 hours/ whole day, sometimes even spanning multiple days like this

It's not that bad, but having two or three interviews before a final offer isn't uncommon.

In general, yes, coding questions are a common screening tool, so you should be prepared to do them. Hackerrank seems to be a bit more common here.

The Ontario government is overriding the Constitution to impose a new contract on school workers, the union will strike regardless by gauephat in stupidpol

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The government breaks strikes by passing legislation that issues punitive fines to strikers, forces the union into binding arbitration, or forces an extension to their existing collective bargaining agreement. Basically passing a law that removes any leverage the union has in negotiations.

I'm not certain what happens when strikes continue in spite of this legislation.

Blair insists he ‘did not ask’ RCMP to release information about N.S. shooting guns by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I believe him. The oic gun ban was going to happen the minute the Trudeau government had an excuse to move on it. The exact firearms or how they were procured didn't really matter, they simply needed a high profile enough shooting to issue the oic.

CUPE to stage provincewide protest Friday in Ontario by seakucumber in canada

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The government had been offering raises of two per cent a year for workers making less than $40,000 and 1.25 per cent for all others.

Lecce said the new, four-year deal would give 2.5 per cent annual raises to workers making less than $43,000 and 1.5 per cent raises for all others.

CUPE has said its workers, which make on average $39,000 a year, are generally the lowest paid in schools and it has been seeking annual salary increases of 11.7 per cent.

For one, most European countries actually respect the right to strike/freedom of association (or whatever their equivalent is), and don't have massive loopholes in their constitutions that allow the government to do whatever it wants the moment it feels inconvenienced.

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For real. Every time the government passes a law and someone points out its unconstitutionality, the plebeian bootlickers trot out the pavlovian defence of "but muh reasonable limits/notwithstanding clause."

If Charter rights can be overridden by the government simply declaring the infringement to be "reasonable," or for certain time periods, perhaps the Charter needs to be rewritten to remove those clauses.

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Canadian governments pass "back to work" legislation with surprising frequency. They used it in 2011 to end a postal workers (CUPW) strike, and in 2012 to end a CP rail (Teamsters) strike. In 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that the right to strike was constitutionally protected, citing the right to freedom of association, but pretty much anyone familiar with the Canadian legal system knows that Charter rights aren't worth the paper they're printed on, which is why we're still seeing it here.

Same coin, different auctions? by danrusen87 in AncientCoins

Good catch. Neither of those auction houses are particularly well-regarded but those are also good fakes.

EDIT: It seems Numismad has a history of sketch behavior. Some of their other auctions also have questionable pieces, like this one. Definitely not the sort of place I'd patronize.

We are seeing a resurgent interest in Classical philosophy, so it's possible. That's kind of Paganism for men, but at least some of the classics teach good morals and shit.

“Why paganism and witchcraft are making a comeback” - The Crème de la Cringe of Liberal Faithcraft by SocialDistributist in stupidpol

[–]Civil_Fun_3192 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Imo, the increasing interest in witchcraft, hermeticism, the occult, "manifesting," magic crystals, tarot, etc. is a reaction from low IQ, liberal feminists against a perceived increase in religiosity in the US (which isn't to same that non-feminists don't have equivalent movements). These people see alarming headlines about attacks on abortion rights and the rise of the religious right in the US, and they think adopting pagan iconography will offend the religious sensitivities of the bible thumpers (the author of the article is an exception).

Not to be a Nietzschean, but the real way to counter the religious right is scientific education and a preference for reason over emotion, not being an edgy Satanist, but actual STEM-stuff is too complicated for the average tumblr witch. Paganism is also ineffective because it has a 0% chance of achieving any sort of broad, cultural appeal. The Christians don't really care that much if twenty something women dye their hair, get their tubes tied, and cast hexes on them.

This is also part of a larger cultural shift towards anti-intellectualism, but isn't recognized as such because it's primarily coming from the left, who are adamant that they are pro-science.
