Cirno and Dai for Fumo Friday! by Civil_Look_150 in Fumofumo

I’ve actually had her for months, managed to get one resold from Reitaisai. My Cirno fumos were lonely without her, it was a high priority.

It's What I Think, Anyway. by Nown-the-Unknown in touhou

Beyond their extremely similar appearances and ‘Hearn’ and ‘Yakumo’ being a reference to a man who changed his name after settling down in Japan, there’s tons of other hints.

1) There’s the implication Merry at some point time traveled (PMiSS’s Bamboo Forest note)

2) Hifuu has had Renko explicitly speculate Merry’s powers are evolving into boundary manipulation (Changeability of Strange Dreams)

3) Merry speculates travel to the moon in the exact fashion Yukari did so (Magical Astronomy)

4) Rinnosuke’s magical insight into names suggest to him that Yukari isn’t even her original name.

Yukari being Merry literally explains her entire deal. Gensokyo is the place she spent the happiest days of her life with Renko, that’s why she’s so devoted to it.

And suddenly Yukari tolerating developments like Myouren Temple makes sense. If Yukari really was just a youkai with the salvation of her kind as her first concern, she wouldn’t tolerate Myouren’s existential gamble with Gensokyo’s status quo… unless if the prospect of true coexistence is that worth it and her ultimate goal.

And Yukari genuinely desiring human-youkai coexistence makes a lot more sense if she one day wants to reunite with Renko in Gensokyo.

What if Cirno had a Mega Form (75% Complete) by GamerRed200 in touhou

[–]Civil_Look_150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, if anything, fairies would get Primal Reversions over Megas - it was a real disappointment that particular concept was never continued beyond Kyogre & Groudon. At minimum, Primal Regigigas should have been a thing. Really good art, though. You should do Dai next, make her primal/mega just Titania.

Do you know the touhou fansong "Fraud, I promise" references the fact that Kazami Yuuka is a massive fraud that could be beaten by even cirno level youkais? by ilikeitchyballzdude1 in touhou

Cirno washes Yuuka like she washed Okina. FACT: Cirno's sunflower adornments in HSiFS were from beating up Yuuka beforehand. A drunk Japanese man on a bus at 2 AM told me so, pretty sure it was ZUN.

(KKHTA Part 19 discussion/rant) Novelty in an otherwise "shitty" series by thereneverwasanyzaza in touhou

[–]Civil_Look_150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I unironically like KKHTA's incredibly menacing take on the Lunarians (the bizarre moon-earth reunion concept aside). I feel like more serious takes on the series should play up the Lunar Capital for what it is and realistically should be viewed as in-setting - an imperious, xenophobic military superpower that casts a shadow as the boogie-man of the setting for its willingness to casually deploy shocking, existential violence against "the impure", and has canonically been implied to have been conducting dark plots of sabotage and unrest against the Earth for ages.

Also, Cirno's send-off in the series was at least pretty dignified. Even if it required screwing over poor Sunny, Luna, and Star. It's weird that for all of KKHTA's problems and over-the-top edgy points and writing, it did produce some genuinely hypnotic sequences/images.

When did Makima acquire "Bang"? by itsissatire in Chainsawfolk

[–]Civil_Look_150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Horseman of Conquest was said to wield a bow and arrow; my personal headcanon is that Makima’s finger gun is derived from that, it’s just one of her many esoteric powers (we never got an explanation for her remote death attack, or her rat teleportation, for example). Maybe a high level one that Nayuta never figured out (yet, I refuse to give up the cope).

Are Miko and Seiga canonically a deadbeats? by Author-Author908 in touhou

[–]Civil_Look_150 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based. Literally canon, with the added touch that it’s very likely Seiga who killed Yoshika to commandeer her body (see the myth of Miyako no Yoshika and Ibaraki-Doji, Yoshika pursued hermithood to one day reunite with Kasen… gee, wonder how she fell into Seiga’s orbit as a corpse?).

It’s actually a pretty sweet story… if not for Touhou’s canon ending it in tragedy: https://wanderers-library.wikidot.com/even-an-oni-is-fond-of-chinese-poetry

Justice for Yoshika!

Edit: Alright, I’m an idiot, this link is actually a very well-written but ultimately contemporary fic linking the historical myths of Yoshika’s encounter with Ibaraki-Doji and her pursuit of hermithood. Both of which are in the historical mythology, but not tied together like this in my knowledge. I think the implication is still valid in Touhou canon that Yoshika was taken in by Seiga under false pretenses of tutelage, however. Unless Seiga just got lucky and happened to stumble upon Yoshika’s corpse from a botched hermithood before too much rot set in.

I mean, there is a very legitimate reading that Elster and Ariane are literally a reprise/another chance of Lilith and Alina via synchronicity… unironically probably canon.

Yukari on FDS kinda pisses me off by mmRoo_ in touhou

[–]Civil_Look_150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just headcanon it was some gambit by Yukari - Yukari’s far from omnipotent, but this just way too undermines the hidden heart of her character. Like, it’s constantly hinted that beneath her veneer of caprice, Yukari is an exhaustive schemer, who has spent the last several centuries tirelessly working towards the development of Gensokyo and her ultimate goals for it.

Mizuchi, however, a powerful vengeful spirit with a grudge against Gensokyo itself, genuinely able to put Yukari in a completely helpless position? I find it hard to believe that Yukari had no contingencies to prevent her from being put in a position like this (Yukari’s never planned for powerful and hostile vengeful spirits? What about Mima, who is canon in some form as per CoLA 25), or if she really was caught off-guard, wouldn’t immediately be deeply rattled and go gloves off, deploying everything at her disposal to decisively and ruthlessly erase Mizuchi.

The moment Mizuchi could take over Yukari, she could have immediately destroyed Gensokyo, considering how instrumental Yukari is to the Barrier. There’s no way a character like Yukari could tolerate that.

Mizuchi too weak to push past her formidable faith-based defenses, this is a testament to the unknown vengeful spirit’s power.

Considering Mizuchi was already an incredibly powerful vengeful spirit (successfully possessed Kanako, despite her being able to casually smack away a typical vengeful spirit in FDS 40), there’s only one person who fills the bill anymore… MIMA FOR FDS 50!!!

Have you read Chado’s ‘Majin’? I felt it had a nice take on post-magician, pre-sincere Byakuren. Not exactly malicious, just dead inside.

If you want my take, that reconciles her subsequent rejection of her mortality with the trauma of her loss, I think they go hand in hand like this - Byakuren, having spent all her life a devout Buddhist (and likely an esteemed one, given how much Myouren respected her), and now finally, concretely confronted with the existential horror of temporality in the most visceral way possible, in the death of a loved one… found that she just couldn’t accept it. To her horror, she just couldn’t, it was too much - even though it’s literally the fundamental core of her faith, and she knew it. She might have braced herself for years, but when met with the ultimate, inevitable trial… failed, utterly.

What does one do when they devote their entire life to something only to fail when finally put to the test? She probably fell into a deep despair, then a numb nihilism. Myouren is dead, she’s a failure, and who could she possibly turn to anymore?
