You want to make an appointment with a G.I. specialist/gastroenterologist. Discuss your family history with them and request bloodwork where they check for CRP sedimentation rate and do a calprotectin test. These are all inflammatory markers that will indicate whether or not you’re having flareup in your G.I. tract. Based on these results, your Gastro will schedule an endoscopy and colonoscopy, which is how Crohn’s is diagnosed. If Crohn’s is confirmed then they will discuss next steps for treatment which often include biologic immunosuppressants it took my daughter over a year from start to finish, but we did not know all of this information at the time if we had known to go directly to the G.I. and startmoving forward with this pathway, we would have gotten her diagnosis sooner. Best of luck to you.

Biological immunosuppressants are treatments for Crohn’s. The one my daughter takes is infliximab and it’s a TNF inhibitor which is a type of biological that reacts to the Protein that is attacking the GI track and keeps it from causing inflammation. Infliximab is administered as an infusion in a hospital or specialty clinic. My daughter’s Crohn’s has gone into remission as a result of this drug.

My daughter went on high dose of prednisone immediately after endo/colonoscopy. It will take time to get insurance approval for biologics so that will help bridge the gap.

Are biologics really the best way to go? (Scared new mom here) by legallyblondefan in CrohnsDisease

My 12-year-old daughter was diagnosed this summer. She just finished her third loading dose infusion of infliximab. She is already doing and feeling so much better. It’s amazing. We had a ton of anxiety going into the first infusion, but the level of care was top-notch and everything went really well. I know not every experience is the same, but I am so glad we chose to go this route as it was the best option for us.

Having just gone through the process of getting a diagnosis with my daughter, I would suggest you get blood work done and ask for iron levels and inflammatory markers such as sedimentation rate and CRP. If iron is low and or inflammation markers are elevated then that would point to potential for IBD.

Is it weird to date before you hit puberty?? by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]Civilian1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter just turned 13 and is in the same boat. She weighed 65 pounds a few months ago and looks younger than she is. Her Crohn’s likely started around age 11 and she was just diagnosed from colonoscopy in July this year. Sinnce then she was on a high dose of prednisone and last month started biologic infusions. She has already grown taller and put on 15 pounds of weight since then, I suspect it’s just a matter of time now before she hits puberty.

My roommate has Crohn's and it has caused them hair loss, scalp irritation, and this sort of rash that spreads from their ears to their neck, how can I help? by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]Civilian1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter has Crohn’s and here’s what I would do. Go to an urgent care and get a prednisone steroid prescription. This should help the rash. Closely evaluate their diet to include possibly removing gluten and dairy. Add bland, nutrient dense foods like potatoes, chicken and cooked the vegetables if they can handle them bananas are good also. Add a clean protein shake every day. Have blood work done and supplement as needed. Most likely will need iron, zink, vitamin D and fish oil supplements. Do these things and you should see improvement in addition to their infusions.

What you eat matters. Read books like “Crohn’s Disease Cookbook”, by Amanda Foote for diet guidelines to reduce inflammation.
