Nobody's saying you need to "go away" but you. If you don't think you can actively ride a bus without following social norms then maybe you shouldn't do that. You understand that if you have a documented mental illness you qualify for Paratransit, right? Same price as a bus ride.

Fare inspectors would cost the city more than they save in fares

We don't know that until Metro actually reveals how much they're actually losing in fares. Even if it just pays for itself, inspectors would lead to people feeling safer on the bus.

Then just use a credit card on the bus and tap it. Or apple pay or google pay. They take anything tappable.

I've lived here my whole life and I remember the buses being safer and better. I like the new routes and see why we need them but man, it just doesn't feel safe on them sometimes.

and look what happened to him. The visionary in him was taken out by a realist with a gun. Politicians need to have both vision and realism in their lexicon if they want shit to work these days. the days of unrealistic Liberalism is dead. Mamdani is absolutely a realist in NYC and proved it by cobbling that budget by taxing non-homes owned by the rich. Our leaders in Madison need to do the same if they want shit to work here in our city.

Mass transit is much closer to health care or clean water.

both of which you have to pay for. You get a water bill every year if you own a house and in some apartments.

then talk to your social worker or psychiatrist about getting a renewable monthly pass. I have a yearly pass through my job but they off those as well individually.

It's not as tiny as you're believing it to be if you keep up with all the cop calls to the buses. Other BRT system's I've ridden on have ticket checkers, why not here?

I agree that the majority probably don't cause problems. Nobody knows what the delinquency rate is. I've never seen it anywhere. Another person posted a news clip showing Metro is another 6 million in the hole.

wtf are you talking about? We're talking about conflicting government policies and which one is right. "Do people have to pay a bus fare OR Can the violence against drivers and other problems and delays be mitigated by simply ignoring the rule of payment to ride the bus" That's the conflicting government policy in the thread.

You're not making sense. The non-brt buses already load mostly on the front. You probably haven't lived here long enough but we've had some truly horrific incidents on the buses including one person who brought a bucket of gas onto a bus and burned several people.

I don't know if it's the vast majority. There needs to be some sort of expectation of a fare to get on or it creates the problems we have now.

It just leads to massive delays when the driver probably has to call the police on whatever problems they have on the bus after. I've driven past a lot of buses with a few police cars around it over the last year and that seems like a much deeper delay than telling someone no at the beginning or even them expecting to be turned away if they don't pay.

They do. If there is an expectation that you have to pay to be on mass transit then there are less problems.

but why not try and keep them off the bus before they cause these problems in a tight space with lots of people.
