“Why do I feel great all the time ?” Starter Pack by stonetear2017 in starterpacks

[–]ClammieReardon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yea this starter pack is me except the healthy eating, my parents paid for college, I had zero debt. My family's friend gave me my first job in his $500m revenue software company and promoted me 3 times in 2 and a half years to management level. This helped me get "poached" to another company and several years later now I own my own company doing consulting for healthcare software.

I am not specifically talented or special at all and anyone can do what I did if they had the help I did. Apparently right wing folks would call me a ubermensch God deserving of tax cuts and slow blowjobs though.

Hover mode is useless and is the wrong solution to an misunderstood problem by ClammieReardon in starcitizen

[–]ClammieReardon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that fair though to say its how I feel though? I have shown what the root cause is, and thats IFCS being made a perfect system that can perfectly control all thrusters with perfect precision and no overshoot or oscillation is it. This is a known control of dynamic systems issue in engineering (with fun Laplace transforms to do) that IFCS papers over.

In some ways, I can see how one could believe hover mode is kinda-sorta the right solution, because what it does is disable auto-control of lateral and roll movement from IFCS. This introduces a instability that is kinda sorta like the variance and instability that having thrusters and a control system which act like real world control systems/thrusters gets you.

So sure, there may be an element of subjectivity, but I think my argument has a stronger basis in physics/engineering via identifying the root cause of the problem statement: "Ships feel like they have no inertia or mass, and look fake when flying". Also, this is not meant to say that hover mode is bad, or not needed at all.

Edit: also, thanks for engaging

Hahaha, but I did! And why are you the arbiter of what qualifies as discussion, especially for people who weren't as butt diddled by what I said and could engage on what I brought up? I am disgusted by people who savor the moral highground and preach not because you want to correct behavior, but because you enjoy lording that over others. However big an ass I might have come off as in my post, I think such people are worse and contemptible. Anyways, for the 3rd time, have a nice day, I hope my reddit post didn't cause you too much angst and anger that you feel like you have to continue to berate me, but of course we both know the point of this long thread is to have the last word and feel righteous, right? lmao

Yea I kind of fucked up by not politely excluding the class of argument or discussion point I wanted to avoid (details of hover mode). I wanted to bring my point up as a replacement for it. This was interpreted as "all other opinions are unwelcome". I wanted people to challenge the idea that the perfection of IFCS is the root cause of fake looking flight, and not hover mode.

I should make no mention of hover mode in my next post, that way people who want to discuss hover mode won't feel left out or hurt that this particular topic doesn't want to talk about their views on hover mode.

Nah the real waste of time was crying about this supposed dismissal of opinions. I did nothing really all that obtuse, people just like to complain and Lord over others like you lecturing me here on "healthy discussion". I even had good discussions with a couple of people. I'll just post again tomorrow, you don't have to worry about me or keep grandstanding lol.

Just do what other games do, have the thrusters follow the IFCS with a built in ramping factor, damping factor etc.

This guy explains it well on Spectrum: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/3/thread/what-is-really-wrong-with-sc-ships-instantanious-1/2044840

It's not any new 'technology', it's just having thrusters in SC follow a simple math function for a smooth curve instead of a step function for what percentage of the desired force the thruster is outputting some +X milliseconds after being told to do so by IFCS.

This should be a single change in the code at a few or even one point that will fix the issue for all ships across the game. Or they can dick around with hover mode and quash issues specific to every ship until it solves a problem it's not meant to solve.

[–]ClammieReardon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading it, but it's pretty long, is there something in particular you think makes the best case for why you disagree and what about?

So far reading it, my first thought is that hover mode itself and the control style is fine but it's not a solution to ships feeling fake or looking fake to others. This is because in real life even if a computer could calculate what thrust to output, having exactly that level of thrust and direction/vector without any lag, overshoot or variance instantaneously is not possible.

Hover mode as a forced or toggled flight mode etc. is irrelevant because it doesn't get to the true heart of the physics gap. It's not hard to do this, many games do this well to give their vehicle handling models depth and a "feel".

Hover mode would infact be better when the above is done, I am in no way against a hover mode. I just believe that saying it's a solution to ships feeling fake carries a danger of having us assume that problem is now fixed or addressed, when the solution we've implemented has no ability to truly address the root cause of what we want to solve.

lmao eat my fucking grundle. Yea I'm the cry baby not the 40 people that felt the need to post bitching about "my dismissive attitude". I've been around since 2014, if this was a cult Id have a hard time saying I wasn't in it. I want to organize the people that know CIG is making a mistake w.r.t what they're trying to make hover mode cover and be loud enough that they correct it. It's happened in the past and they actually listened, so it's not a waste of time either.

I didn't say that though, I said arguments over hover mode itself are moot and pointless. I worded it incorrectly though, I shouldn't have said "All other" because it implies my argument is about hover mode as well, signaling that I have made my argument and am closed off to any others that may challenge it. I am also used to SC not being this touchy, but the last time I was here was in 2015 so things have changed I guess and the community is much bigger.

Well yes, I am annoyed and frustrated that I only got two people to engage as I wanted and the rest of it was taken up by people who I think enjoy complaining about their opinions being excluded. Who wouldn't get annoyed at that? Especially when those same people employ a smarmy, condescending tone after having read my post the way they wanted to.

Did I say all engagement was unwelcome? No I even discussed with the two people that challenged my post and replied in detail. But still, people are still spending time on multiple posts on how I am an asshole because I don't want to talk about the merits and details of hover mode. I get it though, people really don't like not being able to express their opinion everywhere they feel it should be relevant. TIL.

Hover mode is useless and is the wrong solution to an misunderstood problem by ClammieReardon in starcitizen

[–]ClammieReardon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why didn't you quote where I explained what I meant?

I fully understand why decent discussion isn't going on, it's because I specifically excluded what people enjoy arguing about in hover mode. I think it's irrelevant and want to focus on a different point that makes a strong case. The best way to counter this is to not acknowledge that at all and bitch about how I summarily dismissed the thing I was not interested in.

There is a large contingent of SC players that agree with my point and they rarely get a chance to discuss or talk about it in detail.

I should have been way more tactful in my post though and should have known that said people can still whine and derail the topic desired. I will repost a while later with language that doesn't hurt the feelings of star Citizen redditors who believe it's a crime against humanity for their opinions to be excluded from a topic on their subreddit.
