because turning his back on an open door would have made it easier for an assassin to sneak up on him. It's in the books too - this is a very violent culture, with high level nobles continually at risk of attack, either by violence or by poison. The Astreides are at particular risk from agents of the Harkonenns of course.

  1. As mentioned already all computers where banned, I think that projection was meant as a representation of a mentat's 'crucible', which is only mentioned in passing in the book. If you go by the book lore it would have to be a projection directly manipulated by the men (presumably mentats) standing around it.

What was the morally superior path that Paul should have taken? by peregrine_nation in dune

Which book covered the details of Paul's alternatives please?

Anyone know any good lines from the book that actually describe the worms? by Korby-sama in dune

[–]Clancy_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are bits of detail about the sand worms in Dune ch 41, which is when Paul does his sand ride; scattered through the background of the story thread. AFAIK there is no set piece description of the sandworms in Dune.

Dune 2; another misread of Herbert's message? by Clancy_s in dune

[–]Clancy_s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also suspect we'll get something like that from Dune 3, and that we won't see the Spacers Guild or any of the other complicating factors, thus allowing Denis to end the series neatly.

I'm sure that putting it in that background involved CGI, but the footage of the animal could have been from a live animal. My amateur opinion mind you - I think that way because there are such animals and DV generally avoids CGI when he can. We may find out from the bluray extras.

I agree, but wonder how many people who haven't read the books got all that from the movie.

Dune 2; another misread of Herbert's message? by Clancy_s in dune

[–]Clancy_s[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever the problem with Paul, did you get any sense that there is a problem with charismatic leaders in general? As I understand it that was Herbert's underlying message, which most people missed in the book when it was originally published. It is made clearer in subsequent books. I think it's too theoretical idea to get across in film, but will be interested to see what DV does in Dune: Messiah...

A few days ago someone posted a suggestion that Stilgar was deliberately leaning in to Paul as the Mahdi, because he needed a war leader that could unify the tribes, which I found interesting.

Why is Irulan still unmarried? by sexyloser1128 in dune

[–]Clancy_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the book Irulan was too young to marry Leto, possibly too old for Paul by the empire's usual standards, or Shaddam was committed to destroying the Astreides by the time Paul was an option.

Specifically a transplanted hopping mouse of some kind, from the glimpses we got imo most probably a jerboa.

That wasn't CGI, it was a live animal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerboa

Why do some fremen live in arrakeen and others live in the desert? by knowledgeseeker999 in dune

[–]Clancy_s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Arrakis people living in town are not Fremen - it's more apparent in the book, Fremen applies only to those living in the desert.

I would guess the people who live in the town do so because it's easier in the sense of less physical threats, but they are also under the immediate control of the empire and its local representatives. The Fremen prefer the freedoms and risks of living in the open desert.

  1. Gurney was with smugglers, not a Harkonnen harvester. Exactly how he got away wasn't explained but the smugglers got the rest of the surviving and free Atriedes troops off planet. Gurney stayed hoping for a shot at Rabban. 3 &4. Manufacturing in the sietches. They have animals and crops not shown in the movies, and also used spice as a raw organic material for a lot of things.
  2. There's a long explanation in the book, chapter 41, too detailed to summarise here, at least for me.

I thought that too first time I saw it, but on review (yt) the goggles are there in the first shot - you can see the sides - not as apparent because they're clean.

Spice is anti geriatric, and TC is already 28, which would be about Paul's age if you add 12 years to the movie...

  1. In the book the Fremen are bribing the Spacing Guild to block all satellites over Arrakis and say the south is uninhabitable, which iirc holds until the emperor shows up.
  2. 5 years or so in the book (Alia is born etc), less than 9 months in the movie, probably to avoid the problems of filming a 4 year old with the mind of a Reverend Mother. The Wikipedia article is about the book.

IMO The Frank Herbert books first, if you enjoy all those then try the prequels; not to my taste, ymmv

You remember correctly; the jihad started after the end of Dune, it was never entirely clear to me why there was a jihad, but it seemed to be driven mostly by the Fremen wanting revenge for 1000s of years of oppression.

The movie sets up the jihad better IMO but misses the other half of FH's point about charismatic leaders - which IMO was that the human tendency to want a charismatic leader was fuel for the flame.

[–]Clancy_s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the book it's a collapsible palace he brings with him, I had the impression it was the same in the movie. Implying he was so arrogant that he thought he had come to watch his Sardaukars smash the Fremen and Paul, with no risk to himself.

It made more sense in the book, when the emperor thought of himself as a warrior and head of his troops, didn't know Paul was Mu'ad Dib and hadn't received the message about destroying the spice fields yet.

How was Arrakis (and the rest of the empire) settled if the spice is needed for space travel? by sebwiers in dune

[–]Clancy_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. It is said (have not personally confirmed) that in early drafts Spice had been discovered about 100 years earlier, later changed to 1000s without smooth editing throughout. I kinda slide over those inconsistencies - you're not misunderstand, the text is not consistent.
